  1. On the 1881 Census living with Sarah and her husband were a stepson and a stepdaughter, Alice M M HOLNESS (will look at this age as it appears she married a Samuel Edward HOLNESS in the March quarter of 1881 - she is down as married so this is her married name, but at home with Step Father and Mother on this Census, with no husband with her.) and Willie T C TOWLES. We assume these are Sarah's children from previous relationships/marriages, as we have no further information at present we have not shown more than the one marriage we are sure about. They are living at High Street, St Lawrence, Ramsgate, Kent
  2. 1871 Census - Again on this Census Alice and Willie appear as Stepdaughter and Stepson. The surname is definitely FOWLES for both of them, so this varies from the 1881 Census, but is definitely FOWLES and they were both born in Middlesex. Alice was 11 and Willie was 9. Will See if I can find a Alice FOWLES on the 1861 Census. They were living at 6 Phillips Row, St Lawrence, Kent
  3. 1861 Census There is a Sarah FOWLES with a daughter Alice FOWLES in St Pancras, Middlesex with Alice being the right age. I have altered this Note on 15th August 2005 as I now think I have found the correct Sarah and Alice. I have also altered the chart above to include the first marriage of Sarah. It is quite interesting as her husband on the 1861 is 50 and she is 22, so quite an age difference, but there was also a 17 year age difference in the next marriage. They were living at 15 Cleveland Street, Tottenham Court, St Pancras, London. The family was as follows: Charles FOWLES, aged 50 born Salisbury, Wiltshire, a Coffee House, Keeper, then Sarah A FOWLES, age 22 wife, born St Lawrence, Ramsgate, Kent, then Alice M FOWLES daughter, age 1 born St Lawrence, Ramsgate, Kent. (this leads me to think possibly that Alice was not the child of Charles FOWLES and as she appears on the 1881 Census as a HOLNESS this was her mothers maiden name, but I am not certain of this, for the next person on this Census is a Mercy J CHAPMAN and is down as sister, but she is aged 19 a Domestic Servant  and born in St Lawrence, Kent. Who is this, is it a sister of Charles FOWLES, I doubt this as she is down as single and therefore should have the name of FOWLES, or is she a sister of Sarah and is this her real maiden name, this is what I suspect. There are quite a few CHAPMAN's  in the Thanet area. We need to look at the 1851 Census to see if we can throw any light on this.
  4. 1891 Census - Ancestry.com has this family indexed as BRIA - definitely BIRCE on the Census, but the CE are close together, so if they do their indexing using Optical Character Recognition it would appear as BRIA. The family is living at Chapel Road, Ramsgate, Kent
  5. 1901 Census - I am certain I have found the family for John BRICE on the 1901 Census. I have put possibly married to France Helena MIDDLEWEEK, for the following reasons. The 1901 Census shows the wife as Frances, born Kings Cross, London, so a marriage in London would be the most likely option. They had two children on the 1901 Census, a Helena, born 1899, St Lawrence, Kent  and a John born 1901, St Lawrence, Kent. So the second name of his wife being Helena ties up with the fact they named their first child Helena, also the marriage in 1897 ties up well with the birth of Helena in 1899. If this actual marriage is wrong he still married a Frances and had two children, so will add a Chart for the family at some point. They were living at 18 Staffordshire Street, Ramsgate, Kent
  6. 1901 Census - Alfred BRICE was a Boarder at 16 Claremont Gardens, St Lawrence, Ramsgate, Kent. he was 21 and a Bricklayer's Labourer, born in St Lawrence, Kent. Lodging in the house of an Alice KEMP who was a widow age 41.
  7. I have found a death for a John BRICE in Thanet as shown above, he was the correct age so I assume the correct person, their children John, was married and Alfred was a Boarder. At present I cannot find Sarah BRICE, either on the death BMD or on the 1901 Census as Sarah BRICE, or possibly remarried on BMD.
  8. 1891 Census - William FOWLES was living at Workhouse Yard, St Lawrence, Kent. He was 29 a Bricklayer's Labourer and down as being born in London, his wife was Annie, age 28 born Ramsgate, Kent. His children on this Census were Ellen (Maria) age 5 (December quarter 1885) a Scholar, born St Lawrence, Kent, Charles (John), age 4 (March Quarter 1887) born St Lawrence, Kent, Alice (Rose), age 3 (March quarter 1888), born St Lawrence, Kent and Annie 2 born St Lawrence, Kent. (-) where pars around items on this note information added from BMD site for children.
  9. 1901 Census - Willie FOWLES was living at 12 Grosvenor Road, St Lawrence, Kent. (Ancestry.com did not find this family under FOWLES, search on Christian names, but when it came up it was FOWLES, so do not know why it did not find it). Willie was 39 a Bricklayer's Labourer, born London, his wife was Annie aged 49 born Ramsgate, Kent. The children who were all born in St Lawrence, Kent, were Charles, age 14, a shop porter, Alice, age 13, Anne age 12 - I have added (-) on the following children for additional information found on BMD to the Census. The first three children already have this information on Note 8 - Sarah (Ann) age 9 (December quarter 1891), Edith (Lydia) age 7 (June 1893), Florence (Louise) age 2 (March 1899), William (Alfred) age 1 month (March quarter 1901). It is possible there was a William Henry FOWLES born March quarter 1895 in Thanet district who possibly died. He is the only FOWLES on the BMD births that I have not covered and there is a gap between Edith and Florence which might be accounted for by this William. They had another William in 1901. I have found a Death on BMD for a William Henry FOWLES in December quarter 1896, so I would think that I was correct in my thinking.
  10. 1901 Census - I have found an Alice KEMP who has KEMP a daughter named Florence KEMP, but other four children with the HOLNESS name, but as already noted in Note 6 above Alfred BRICE was with them, so I am fairly certain that Alice BRICE who married Samuel HOLNESS, who must have then died, married a KEMP who had children, who then also died. Alice KEMP has the right birth date, so I am fairly certain that this is the case. I could not find on the 1891 Census, but now have something else to go on.  Details of 1901 Census - Alice KEMP was the Head, she was 41, living at 16 Claremont Gardens, St Lawrence, Kent. The people with her were: James HOLNESS, son, age 18 a Brickmaker, born St Lawrence, Kent, Ellen HOLNESS, daughter, age 14 a Domestic Housemaid, born St Lawrence, Kent, Alice HOLNESS, daughter, age 11, born St Lawrence, Kent, John HOLNESS, son, age 6, born St Lawrence, Kent, James KEMP, Stepson, age 12, born Greston, (Preston) Kent, Rhoda KEMP, Stepdaughter, age 11 born Ringwold, Kent, Florence KEMP, daughter, age 1 born Ramsgate, Kent and then as I say as note 6, Alfred BRICE, Boarder, age 21 a Bricklayer's Labourer born St Lawrence, Kent. Will add a Chart at some stage, it is quite a complicated one.
  11. 1891 Census - With the information on the 1901 Census it has been possible to find the HOLNESS family on the 1891 Census - indexed as HOLVERS. The family were living at 21 Shaftsbury Street, Ramsgate, Kent. Samuel Edward HOLNESS was 32 a Fisherman, born Ramsgate, Kent, Alice Maud Mary HOLNESS was 31, born St Lawrence, Kent. The children were: James Henry HOLNESS, age 8, a Scholar, born St Lawrence, Kent,  Albert Edward HOLNESS, age 6, a Scholar, born St Lawrence, Kent, Ellen Maud HOLNESS, daughter, age 4, born St Lawrence, Ramsgate, Kent and Alice Sarah HOLNESS, age 1 born Ramsgate, Kent
  12. 1891 Census - I have found Charles KEMP on the 1891 Census, so giving me his details: He was living at Kemps Cottages, Preston, Kent. He was 32 born Sholden, Kent and an Agricultural Labourer, his wife was Mary J KEMP, age 40 and also born in Sholden, Kent. The children on this Census were: George E KEMP, age 12 Scholar, born Sholden, Kent, Nellie KEMP, age 10, a Scholar, born Foulmarsh?, Kent, Bertie C KEMP age 8, born Foulmarsh?, Kent, Annie KEMP, age 7, born Sholden, Kent, James E KEMP age 2 born Preston, Kent and Rhoda J KEMP, age 1 born Preston, Kent.
  13. I looked for a death of Samuel Edward HOLNESS, which I have not found at present, but there was a death of a Samuel Charles HOLNESS, age 3 in the Thanet district in the March quarter of 1895 who could have been one of the children of this family, born in the March quarter of 1892

I think this is as far as I can go with this Chart until I add the three new Charts.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
