    EDWARD ARTHUR BRAND COBB
Edward Arthur Brand COBB was born on the 28th August 1863 in Coombe Keynes, Dorset and baptised on the 25th October of that year in the Church of the Holy Rood in the same village. He was presumably given the names Arthur and Edward as these were the names of the brothers of his parents, Arthur for his father’s brother, and Edward for his mother’s brother. He came to be known as “Ed” or “Eddie”.
In later years Edward remembered the family moving to Lulworth, and how homesick he was for his former home, but he also remembers enjoying a very happy childhood in Lulworth. “He apparently was an adventuresome and not-too-disciplined boy; he loved to run over, climb and slide down the steep chalk cliffs and slippery downs, gather mushrooms” and “enjoy the daffodils and primroses that bloomed profusely in the wild. The old pirates’ caves offered further opportunity for exploration”. He spent a lot of time by the sea, swimming and fishing, collecting mussels and crabs. He watched the ships and to make sure he saw a new and many-masted ship in port he once stowed away on a boat to and from Plymouth. He sat with the fishermen who were repairing their nets and if he helped them pull in their catch he would sometimes be rewarded with fish to take home. At other times there were the excursion boats leaving to go to France to see.
Edward could remember the journey to America and the disappointment at finding that his father was not at the station to meet them. However, he also remembered how overjoyed he was when Amos was seen, on his horse, coming towards them through the snow. Next day Edward was sent to the nearest town, three and a half miles away to collect some medicine. He wore short trousers and his socks ended below his knee, so his knees were bare, and there was still snow on the ground. It took him nearly the entire day because besides the problems caused by the snow, he met many boys who laughed at his appearance and English accent and so had to do “himself and his country proud”!
He began his working life helping his father but later moved to Maryville, Missouri where he worked for the railroad and helped construct railroad bridges, enjoying such activities as they were in the open air.
He was light-complexioned and grew up to be “small (for a man)”. His mother had endeavoured to bring him up as a little gentleman, and it was his father who taught him to fight enabling Edward to boast “I could lick them who was twice as big”. He could be helpful, as he used to take his father his lunch packed in a basket to keep it warm. He was also very serious, industrious and ambitious, and although his formal education was very meagre he became very interested in subjects such as “history, geography, the land, animals and nature generally”. He also developed a very good head for business. “Added to his passion for hard work was his firm belief in integrity. He considered his word his bond. He was conservative and frugal. He was proud of being an American, took keen interest in its policies and politics, was a voting Democrat until his death, but he never forgot the country of his birth.” He had an extra-ordinary sense of humour and despite ill-health he always endeavoured to “keep going” although he had periods of depression when he was quick to lose his temper.
Edward was unwell during his twenties when he was considered to have Consumption. He went to live in Colorado, Montana and Wyoming where he worked for a Mr HOLT on a cattle ranch. He bought his own small herd which he began rearing on land he had purchased in Colorado, at the same time continuing a correspondence with Louisa Elizabeth HOLT, the oldest daughter of the COBB neighbour in Savannah, Missouri. After their marriage, Edward sold his possessions in Colorado and he and his bride began their married life near Savannah.
Whilst there they had four children before moving to Bedford, Iowa in 1902 where Edward went into partnership with his brother, William. They were involved in the “coal, wood and ice business on the lakes there” Eventually Edward bought his own land and became a “successful farmer and highly respected member of the community”. He and his wife had their fifth child, Marian, whilst living here. They spent most of the rest of their life until 1938 in Bedford before moving first to Excelsior Springs, Missouri and then to California in 1941.
Edward died on the 10th August 1945, and his wife on the 9th March 1950 in San Fransisco. They are buried in the Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland California.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
