  1. 1871 Census - Horsegate Lane, Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire - Edward not at home on his Census.
1881 Census - Paddock Road, Bushey, Hertfordshire.
1891 Census - 19 Court 21, High Street, Watford, Hertfordshire. Major, Nelly and Edith are all down as GRANGE on this Census, but I think they are all CARPENTER's
1901 Census - 54 York Road, Watford, Hertfordshire. (see Note 12) I am now certain that this is the correct John, Have found the marriage to Mary Ann CARPENTER, two of the children on this Census have the surname CARPENTER so I would think it was possible that this was Mary's second marriage. Will put a Chart on to show this family.
  2. 1881 Census - The? Hamlet, 14 The Houses, Watford, Hertfordshire. Mary CARPENTER who we believe married John GRANGE is down as a half sister on this Census. She is with an Amos Carpenter and with wife Mary. They have a son Amos born 1880. There was a Major Carpenter who is shown on chart above who we believe was the child of Mary J on the chart above, before the 1891 Census we believe she went on to have two more children, Nelly and Edith as shown above. Amos and Mary also went on to have two more children. see CARPENTER Chart 0401
1891 Census - 19 Court 21, High Street, Watford, Hertfordshire. Major, Nelly and Edith are all down as GRANGE on this Census, but I think they are all CARPENTER's
1901 Census - 54 York Road, Watford, Hertfordshire.
    1911 28Aldenham Road, Oxhey, Hertfordshire.
  3.
  4. 1901 Census - 54 York Road, Watford, Hertfordshire.
    1911 28Aldenham Road, Oxhey, Hertfordshire.
  5. 1901 Census - 54 York Road, Watford, Hertfordshire.
  6. 1911 28Aldenham Road, Oxhey, Hertfordshire.
  7. 1881 Census - The? Hamlet, 14 The Houses, Watford, Hertfordshire. Major is with his mother Mary J on this Census with her "half brother" Amos CARPENTER and family,  see CARPENTER Chart 0401
1891 Census - 19 Court 21, High Street, Watford, Hertfordshire.
1901 Census - 47 Queen Street, St Pancras, Middlesex. Major is down as a Nephew with a Alfred HURST, aged 45 a Wheelwright, born Berkhampstead, Buckinghamshire and his wife Jane HURST, aged 43 born Brightons Camp, Hertfordshire. There were six children but at present have not found the connection between Alfred HURST or his wife and Major CARPENTER so will not proceed down this line at present. Ancestry.com has him down as 42 but looking at the Census it is really 22 and therefore the correct age for the Major CARPENTER above. Their are three Major CARPENTERS on the 1901 Census, the other two from Hemel Hempstead, so I would think that one of them Major CARPENTER born in 1863 would have been a brother of Amos above. The other is definitely the son of the Major born in 1863. However having found Amos on his parents and family on the 1871 there is no Major as one of the children, and no Major CARPENTER comes up on a search on Ancestry.com. Taking this further there is a Joshua three years younger than Amos as one of the children in the family and the BMD shows a Joshua Major CARPENTER born March quarter 1863 in Hemel Hempstead, so proving I think this relationship. I will put a chart on at some time to show this family.
  8. 1891 Census - 19 Court 21, High Street, Watford, Hertfordshire.
1901 Census - 54 York Road, Watford, Hertfordshire.
  9. 1891 Census - 19 Court 21, High Street, Watford, Hertfordshire.
1901 Census - 54 York Road, Watford, Hertfordshire.

We have had some problems with this Chart which is explained in the 1881 on Note 2 above. Our conclusions might be incorrect, if anybody knows what the real situation was we would love to hear from them.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
