  1. 1851 Roundstone, Rudgwick, Sussex. Parents Edward IRELAND and Mary HOARE and three siblings
Information from John TERRY's web site 8/1/2017
I think there were a total of eleven children for this family. The following information in brackets was given to me by a Granddaughter of Cecil James IRELAND one of the sons of Charles and Ruth (Edward was the illegitimate son of Mary IRELAND and Mary IRELAND was the illegitimate daughter of Leah IRELAND (IRELAND family recorded in Wisborough Green/Rudgwick as far back as the earliest entries of the Parish Registers in 16th century). James Mitchell CARPENTER, is cited as Edward's father on Edward's marriage certificate I believe. James MITCHEL went on to marry someone by the surname name of MANN. Mary IRELAND went on to marry a chap called Jonathan CHANTLER. Leah married a chap called John POLTOCK. I was amused at West Sussex Register Office in Chichester to see that Edward's baptism record appeared partly erased on the microfiche - as though the Parish Register had been tampered with. The fact that Mary IRELAND was his mother was confirmed to me by the Bishop's Register. The IRELANDs were a farming family in the Rudgwick area in the 18th century and there is mention of them breeding a very large pig called the Rudgwick Pig in a couple of European agricultural books on Google.)
1867 Wonersh, Surrey (baptism of Elizabeth Mary Rose)
1869 Wonersh, Surrey (baptism of Charles Mark)
1871 Census - Azoud? Common, Wonersh, Surrey - Down as IRLAND (without the e in IRLAND on this Census). Elizabeth is down as being 13 on this Census, but I think this is incorrect and she was only 3 (see Note 5) She is also down as Elizabeth M R (although the R actually looks like an A) Charles who on the BMD is Charles Mark but on the Censuses other than this one is just Charles appears on this Census as Charles M, again confirming I have the right child.
1872 Wonersh, Surrey (baptism of Annie (Anna) Laura)

1887 15 Victoria Street, Godalming, Surrey (baptism of Lena Rosabel)
1891 Census - Cattershall Hatch, Mead Row, Godalming, Surrey. It appears that Annie L is down as Laura on this Census
1901 13 Victoria Road, Godalming, Surrey. Living with them was granddaughter Olive STEVENS (4) born Sutton, Surrey and Nurse Child Henry LAWRENCE (11 mths) born Godalming, Surrey. Also Alfred IRELAND (3) and Edgar IRELAND (2) both born Godalming, Surrey entered as Ruth's sons but they were sons of her daughter Elizabeth Mary Rose entered as Rose on this census
1904 13 Victoria Road, Godalming, Surrey (Inquest details)
    THE DROWNING CASE AT CHARTERHOUSE
An inquest was held on Thursday afternoon at the Farncombe Church Room by Mr. G. F. Roumioau, Coroner, touching the death of Charles Ireland 58 years of age, head carter at the Charterhouse Farm, whose dead body was found in a water tank on the farm early on Tuesday morning. Mr. James Beagley was chosen foreman of the jury.
Mrs Ruth Ireland, widow of the deceased, living at 13 Victoria-road, Godalming, said she last saw her husband alive on Sunday, when he went through the passage. She heard him leave home on Tuesday morning soon after five. They were not on very good terms, and deceased had not spoken to her for over three weeks. He had never threatened to destroy himself. He had suffered very much with a Weak heart, and had often been brought home from the Charterhouse. - Elizabeth Mary Ireland, daughter of the deceased, said she saw her father leave home on Tuesday morning about ten minutes or a quarter past five, in his usual condition. He did not complain of feeling ill, but had done so before; last week he complained of his left side. She was told that he had been brought home in a weak state, but did not know of her own knowledge, as she was away from home. Things were not very pleasant at home. Deceased had never threatened to destroy himself.
Frederick Mercer, a carter living at New road, Compton deposed that he worked under deceased at Charterhouse Farm, On Tuesday morning he arrived at the farm at ten minutes to six, and saw that deceased had been there because the horses were fed, but could not find him. About twenty minutes afterwards witness went to get some water for the horses from the tank outside the stable door. He dipped the pail, and found something soft. He then put his hand in and felt something like a head. He brought the deceased's body to the top, with assistance. There was a stay across the tank, and the body was right underneath this. The tank was let a little into the ground. The deceased used generally to rinse himself in the tank. Witness had been 13 years at the farm, and the deceased 20 years, and the tank had been there all the time he had been working there. It was very nearly full of water, and when they washed there they had to lean a little forward. Deceased's coat and waistcoat were hanging up, as usual, in the table. he had never known of deceased having any illness, or of his having been taken home in a fainting fit. He had not complained to witness of any trouble, and he was always very cheerful. He had no reason to think that he destroyed himself. If deceased had fainted, he would be very likely to fall into the tank. The body was under the stay and witness thought he must have struggled and got underneath. - In answer to Mr. L. C. Wright, a juryman, witness said they tried artificial respiration for a quarter of an hour, but found he was quite dead. - Mr. Wright: I have heard of its being kept on for any hour with success. - Replying to other questions, the witness said the deceased used no soap with the water when washing. It was usual for him to get to work before witness.
Mr. T Tribe, who was on the jury, informed the Coroner that he had measured the tank, and gave its dimensions as 4ft 4 and 1/2 inches in length by 3ft 8 in. wide; about 3ft deep, and the depth of water was 2ft 7 in. The tank was 2ft out of the ground. The iron bar was 19 inches from the top and 16 inches from the bottom.
Dr. Clarence Haig-Brown, of Godalming, deposed to being called to see the deceased on Tuesday morning and finding him dead. He was told they had done all they could to restore animation. The cause of death was drowning. He had not know the deceased professionally, but had known him personally for about 20 years, and met him almost every day. He saw the tank on that morning. He thought from the explanation given by Mercer that Ireland must have stooped to get the water, and whilst he was in that position he might have slipped, although that was unlikely, as the ground was well covered with cinders. He might also have been seized with faintness and in putting his head down have fallen in. In that case he would be unconscious, and unable to do anything. If he had had an epileptic fit he would probable have struggled. He had never been called to attend the deceased for any seizure. - The Coroner; The jury cannot quite understand, nor can I, how he got underneath the bar - Witness said that rather puzzled him, but it was conceivable that the deceased slipped and put his hand on the bottom of the tank and went under the bar. It struck him that if the bar had not been there the man might have been able to raise himself, unless he was unconscious. The Coroner; Or unless he went there for a purpose. If a man destroys himself he sometimes does it in a very shallow place. - Dr. Haig Brown stated that he did not examine the body very much, except to ascertain that he was dead. He did not notice any mark or sign of injury. - Mr. Wright asked the doctor if a post-mortem examination would have revealed the fact the deceased had a weak heart. - The Doctor replied that it might reveal the fact of the man having had a stroke, and possibly, but not positively, whether he had disease of the heart, but it would show nothing as regarded an epileptic fit. - A juryman mentioned that a man living next door to the deceased for two years had known him to have had two fits. - Dr. Haig-Brown pointed out that the deceased had been in the habit of going up the hill with horses two or three times a day, and it was likely that if he had heart disease he would have shown some signs of it.
The Coroner asked the jury if they would like the case adjourned, for a post-mortem examination. He must say it never occurred to him before, but it would have been no trouble for the doctor to have made one. The jury did not wish for a post-mortem examination, and the Coroner, in summing up, advised the jury, in the absence of any direct evidence of how the man got into the water, to find a verdict of found drowned.
The jury returned a verdict of found drowned, there being no evidence to show whether deceased got into the water by accident or otherwise.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
