  1. 1841 Census - Park Lane, Langham, Essex. Elizabeth is the Head, Andrew is with her, and there is a and Esther MUNSON, aged 40, this nearly ties up with the age of Sarah above but it could be another daughter.
1851 Census - Langham, Essex. Andrew is down as single, aged 64, it looks like a Wadower? Labourer
1861 Census - 10 Park Lane, Langham, Essex. On this Census he is down as a Widower, so he could have been a Widower Labourer on the 1851 Census. Have not record of a marriage, but likely to have been before 1837.
  2. 1841 Census - On the Green, Great Holland, Essex. With the family was a Matilda BLOYER, aged 5, born Essex (I had another family On the Green with an Arthur and Matilda MUNSON as children as this was their Grandparents names  I feel they must also be connected to this family. I have therefore added  them to this Chart. Head is John. aged 25 and wife is Ann
  3. IGI Information - Marriage date and Christian name of Samuel.
  4. 1841 Census - On the Green, Great Holland, Essex.
  5. 1841 Census - Lockwoods, Langham, Essex
Having found the baptism for Arthur MUNSON in Langham, with parents Arthur and Matilda, I have tried to find him after his baptism date. The information I have put could be wrong, but it will enable me to look for marriage, baptisms of children and death when I next go to the Record Office.
  6. 1861 Cottage,  Felsted, Essex. James MUNSON aged 45 Police Constable born Langham, Kent, Mary Ann aged 29 Policemans Wife born Felsted, Essex, Charles A Aged 14 a Scholar born Great Dunmow, Essex, George aged 11 a Scholar born Felsted, Essex, Alfred aged 8 a Scholar born Felsted, Essex, Henry aged 1 born Felsted, Essex and John C aged 4 months born Felsted, Essex1871 Census - Village, Felsted, Essex,

1881 Cottage, Village, Felstead, Essex. James MUNSON aged 64 Police Constable born Langham, Essex, Mary A aged 49 born Felstead, Essex, Ellen aged 14 a Scholar born Felstead, Essex, Caroline aged 7 a Scholar born Felstead, Essex, Annie aged 7 born Felstead, Essex and William Aged 5 born Felstead, Essex.

1901 Village, Felstead, Essex. James MUNSON aged 86 a Police Pensioner born Langham, Essex, Mary A aged 69 born Felstead, Essex
I found the following on the Essex Police site. I think a trip to Chelmsford is called for to try and find the actual picture as it would appear that they actually have a picture of James MUNSON in police uniform:
Before the advent of the helmet another hat was in use. The museum has pictures of Constable James Ballard of Shoeburyness, Constable Thomas Luckin of Great, Dunmow, Constables James Munson and Simon Harrington of Felsted and Sergeant Raven of Colchester. All were serving in the 1870's and 1880's and all wore bowler hats. It was originally thought that these were civilian hats worn with uniform but it was then seen that they had chinstraps.  (Robert THORPE has emailed me a picture of James MUNSON without hat which I have included above)
  7. 1841 Census - On the Green, Great Holland, Essex.
On the baptism of Andrew and Joseph in Great Oakley is says Adult son of Arthur and Matilda MUNSON
  8. 1841 Census - On the Green, Great Holland, Essex.
1851 Census - Croydon Road, Beckenham, Kent. There is a Joseph down with a second name MUSEUM, but he is the correct age for the Joseph above and born in Langham, Essex. I think it is more than likely the name is down wrong. It does look like that on the actual census, whereas Ancestry.com had the town down as Longham, Essex and it is definitely Langham. As at the present time it does not make a lot of difference I have added the Note 9 to him and also the occupation. He was a servant to a Ann ERIES, a Cook born Bermondsey, London aged 44, there was another Servant with them.
1861 Census - Waterloo Place, Clapham, Surrey - Taking the information from Note 9, I looked for a Joseph MUNSON, born Langham, Essex in 1825, there are two that come up, but I think this is the correct one as the other one is still in Langham, the occupation of Gentleman Coachman ties up with the 1851 Census return, the place Clapham is not too far from Beckenham and the first children were born in Camberwell, Surrey which is even nearer. So I do think this is the correct person. As the eldest child was born in Langham, Essex and they were only living in Great Holland in 1841 I would think it was likely that all the children were born in Langham before they moved. I will be going to the Essex Record Office in the next week or so and will check to see what I can find. This should confirm all the above details. For the present I have gone ahead an added the details I have found, mainly so I have them all to hand when I go to the Record Office.
1871 Census - Waterloo Retreat, Clapham, Surrey
1891 Census - 11 Waterloo Place, Clapham, Surrey.
1901 Census - 31 Park Crescent, Clapham, Surrey
On the baptism of Andrew and Joseph in Great Oakley is says Adult son of Arthur and Matilda MUNSON
A message on the Munson- Thorogood  Group I belong to from Eileen SYKES includes a message she received for a Gary Williams
"Hi! I'm a descendant of James Munson (born Langham, Essex 1814), son of Arthur Munson (b 1788) and Matilda King (nee Kiskey) b Boxted,
Essex 1783. I'm trying to find anyone with information regarding Arthur and Matilda's other children (Arthur, John, Robert, Jane, Andrew, Joseph and Matilda). Any information would be gratefully received. Thank you."
It would appear from this information that I have indeed now found correctly three of the children he mentions, John, Andrew and Joseph. It would seems that they had at least three more children Arthur, Robert and Jane. Will try and find these when I go to the Record Office. There is a Robert MONSON in Langham on the 1871 Census, he was born in 1817, so possible this is the Robert we are looking for, for the possible child of this name for this family. His wife Ann was of the same age and they had four children Eliza 11, Jane 9, Elizabeth 7 and Joseph 4. Everyone born in Langham, Essex. In the next property there was a William MONSON aged 57 with a wife Hannah 50 and children Charles 19, Hannah and Mary Ann both aged 12, Susan 10 and Arthur 8. I would think the name should be MUNSON and they are at least related somewhere. It would mean that William was born in 1794 and as such it is possible he is a brother of Arthur above and therefore as Robert is living next door it could be a son of William and not of Arthur. Both Heads of household - Robert and William are down as Agricultural Labourers.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
