Johnson Staff Writer Posted: 12/03/2008 12:00:00 AM MST BLOOMFIELD Florence P. Johnson July 20, 1916 - Dec. 1, 2008 Florence P. Johnson, formerly of Bloomfield, passed away Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, in St. George, Utah. She was born in Virden, on July 20, 1916, to Junius Edward Payne and Sarah Edna Jones. She married Volney McNeil Johnson on May 25, 1937, in the Mesa Ariz., at the LDS Temple. He preceded her in death Nov. 30, 1981. Florence spent most of her adult life taking care of her children and serving in her church. She was a great example to her children of being grateful for what she had and of sharing with those in need. She spent a great deal of time sewing, gardening, canning and making quilts for her children and helping her husband on their farm. After she was widowed she served a full time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the California Santa Rosa mission. She later served a mission at the Family History Center in Mesa, Ariz. In her later years, she spent more than 20 years serving in the church doing name extraction. She felt the greatest accomplishment she had was raising her family and was proud of her sons', grandsons' and granddaughters' mission service to the church. She was greatly loved by all her family and admired for the example she was to us. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Lothair, Elvin, and Al Payne; and by a daughter, Marilyn Field. She is survived by six children, Vaughn (Sandy) Johnson of Omaha, Neb., Clarence (Dana) Johnson of Glenwood, Md., Harvey (Jeanne) Johnson of Highland, Utah, Lynn (Marian) Johnson of Owasso, Okla., Don (Rose Mery) Johnson of St. George, Utah, and Maurine (Robert) O'Neill of South Jordan, Utah; and by 41 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren. This gentle loving patriarch devoted his life to the Lord, his wife and 12 children. His motto was: "Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; So are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them." (Psalm 127). The family would like to thank the Provo Fire Department Paramedics, the doctors and staff at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, at East Lake Care Center and the compassionate staff of Orchard Park Care Center in Orem, who cared for Dean and preserved his life for four months until all of his children were able to visit him and express their love and gratitude for his life. Dean Wilford Payne, was born Oct. 17, 1926 in Washington D.C., to Wilford Houghton Payne and Blanche Ellsworth Payne. After serving a two-year LDS mission to the Northern States, he studied at Brigham Young University where he met Jaynann Morgan. They were married on June 29, 1948 in the Salt Lake Temple. He completed his Jurisprudence Doctorate at the University of Utah in 1952, and practiced law in Provo, Utah with his father-in-law, J. Rulon Morgan for many years. He was a member of the Utah State Bar Association for over 40 years. He relished his various calls to serve in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In every calling and especially as the patriarch of his family, he magnified his priesthood and found great joy blessing others. He held positions in his home ward, BYU and MTC wards including that of bishop, counselor, high councilman, and stake mission president. Dean and Jaynann served a public affairs mission in the Philippines for two years from 1995-1997, and just completed a two year hosting-mission in August at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City. He was active in civic organizations, some of which included the Boy Scouts of America, the Red Cross, and as County Chairman of the Republican Committee, and President of the George Albert Smith Chapter of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers. Dean honored his pioneer heritage and loved telling stories of his ancestors. Dean was a lifelong student and the children thought of him as a walking encyclopedia of fascinating information about almost any subject but especially history, geology, science, the scriptures, language, music and fine arts. He conducted early morning and late-night scripture study and organized unusual family home evenings. He loved traveling and people of other cultures, hence, he gallivanted about the world with his wife and children soaking in all the history and culture in what the children called "hysterical pilgrimages." Dean and Jaynann welcomed into their home and hearts countless young people from all over the world who were in need and who lived with them for months or sometimes years and were treated as their own children. The family has many "adoptees," still beloved, with whom they maintain contact. Dean was a great collector! Not only of children, but of coins, stamps, books, rocks, paintings and music. He loved to bathe the children and read to them at night and tuck them into bed. He was witty and had a great sense of humor. He loved to wrestle, joke, tease and banter with his children and grandchildren. He dearly loved his 69 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren and enjoyed teasing them. When the children would ask how much something cost, he would reply "Oh, eleventy two fifty plus tax." Or if they asked where he was going he would say "I'm going to see a man about a double bird dog." Dean was an exemplary family man and only the Savior took precedence over his wife and children. His testimony of Jesus Christ and His Atonement was always a beacon to his family. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jaynann, and 12 children: Susan Carole A.K.A. I then found a Family Tree on Ancestry which confirmed this but also showed he had another wife and as can be seen a total of 18 children. The original four I found were Wilford, Ivan, Harry and Roy. Harry must have been married to both wives at the same time as birth dates clash. I have then found on findagrave web site a lot more information for a lot of the children.
