    Swimmers call for heated pool
GRAVESEND swimmers are getting cold feet because the open air pool is not heated. And now members of Gravesend Swimming Club are asking the council to improve it by installing a modern system.
They have collected more that 5,000 names on a petition which will be handed to the Amenities Committee when the pool closes in two weeks.
Members think it should be heated before swimming starts again next year.
Mrs. Maud Povey and Amateur Swimming Association teacher and club members thinks conditions have deteriorated since it was opened in the 1930s. She said the open air pool was heated until the Electricity Board became nationised and it was thought too expensive to heat the pool.
She says the heating system had since become useless through neglect. Club membership used to be more than 800 but numbers have dropped in recent years.
She said children enjoyed learning in warmer indoor pool's where they do not gasp with cold when they plunge in.
"Other clubs who have been once or twice refuse to come again because their members were too cold," she said.
Children were wrapped in blankets to keep warm during a contest in August she added.
Mother with young Children had difficulty drying them because they got too cold. "I feel sorry for them. The changing rooms are always cold. When the pool was first built it had matting strips to walk on but notw there are cold plastic mats," she said.
Last week only one child came to learn to swim at an evening class and after going into the water up to his waist he came out quickly because of the cold. "We feel strongly that it is for children and they do not have anybody to speak for them.
"Prisons, and other organisations have indoor pools so why should the public have to put up with this?" she asked.
Her husband, Roy, 50 also goes to the pool regularly. "I think that for a club with the facilities we have, we do well. The bath managers have always helped us as much as they can. It is just something that has lapsed and the council have become unaware of the situation. "It's a pity the numbers have dropped because there are a number of good swimmers in Gravesend but they do not want to train in cold water."
A council spokesman said: "Earlier this year the council called for a report on the possibility of heating the pool. They wanted to know what was involved and what the benefits would be.
"The report is due out this autumn., the council will be considering the matter in the coming series of committee meeting. The matter is definitely under review.

    BRENDA AND NORMAN
    STILL CHAMPIONS
Gale force winds, which whipped up heavy seas, marred the Kent long distance swimming championships in Dover Harbour on Sunday. Because of the weather the 3,000-years course had to be slightly shortened.
But conditions did not deter Norman Trust (Club Omega Crayford) and Brenda Bourne (City of Rochester S.C.), who retained their titles for the third successive year.
Eight women competed and all finished. But of the 19 male started, three retired because of the heavy seas.
Because of the change of course the times, extremely fast, with not be ratified as records.
Trusty's win was a fine effort, and he managed to shake off a determined challenge from resolute Doug Pilcher, the Dover policeman who swims for Folkstone. Thirty seconds separated these swimmers. Povey (Gravesend) swam well to take third place.
The Gillingham Cup, for ladies, and the Lindridge Cup, men, together with medals, were present by Mr. F Halsell, president of Kent County Amateur Swimming Association.
    Results: Men, 1 N. J. Trusty, 34 mins. 22.9 sec; 2 D. F. Pilcher, 35 Mins, 11 sec.; 3 K Povey, 38 mins, 55 secs.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
