    Victory Medal
Given the information we have available it is likely that Frederick James STEMP was entitled to the Victory medal, also called the Inter Allied Victory Medal. This medal was awarded to all who received the 1914 Star or 1914-15 Star and, with certain exceptions, to those who received the British War Medal. It was never awarded alone. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.
Eligibility for this award consisted of having been mobilised, fighting, having served in any of the theatres of operations, or at sea, between midnight 4th/5th August, 1914, and midnight, 11th/12th November, 1918. Women who served in any of the various military organisations in a theatre of operations were also eligible.
    British War Medal
From the information available to us, it is very possible that Frederick James STEMP was entitled to the British War Medal for service in World War One. This British Empire campaign medal was issued for services between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918.
The medal was automatically awarded in the event of death on active service before the completion of this period.
    Service: British Army
    Regiment: royal garrison artillery
    The Royal Garrison Artillery
    At the end of the 19th century the Royal Garrison Artillery, which was part of the Royal Artillery, was divided into 3 Divisions;
The Eastern Division, HQ at Dover. Depot companies at Dover and Great Yarmouth.
The Southern Division, HQ at Portsmouth. Depot companies at Gosport and Seaforth (near Liverpool).
The Western Division, HQ at Devonport. Depot companies at Plymouth and Scarborough.
The Garrison Artillery was composed of 104 service companies in 1900, forty of them in the UK, 37 in various colonies of the Empire and 27 in India. A company was commanded by a major with 6 or so officers, around 10 NCOs and 100 to 200 men.
The uniform of Garrison Artillery was the same as Field Artillery except that they were more likely to wear trousers instead of boots and breeches. On their shoulder straps were the initials of the name of their Division and the number of their company.
The RGA developed from fortress-based artillery located on British coasts. From 1914 when the army possessed very little heavy artillery it grew into a very large component of the British forces. It was armed with heavy, large calibre guns and howitzers that were positioned some way behind the front line and had immense destructive power.

He appears to be a lot older than his wife on birth and death details, but I believe he was married before as there is only one Frederick William WEAKLEY who appears on the BMD but if this is the case he must have divorced his first wife as she died after the death of his second wife, details as follows:

    Note
Known as "Big Uncle George - about 6' tall
    Note
There is a George A STEMP marriage in December quarter 1946 in Southport, Lancashire to a Jane Selina L CAUNCE, she was born on 6th January 1917 and died November 1993 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent aged 76. Although not named Nell it is possible she was known by that name, the Selina or the L in her name could have given her the name Nell. As it was at the end of the war it is possible George had met and married someone well outside the area he lived in. The chart above states there were two children a boy first and then a girl and it appears this couple had two children a Peter STEMP in 1948 and a Pauline STEMP born in 1952 both in Southport district, Lancashire. So this appears to tie up with this information. We are not at all certain we have found the correct couple, the original information was given to us by a Brian HORNBY in Australia and a Margaret JARVIS but we have nothing else other than what appears on the Chart above. If anyone looking at this chart can confirm or otherwise the information in this paragraph we would love to hear from you.
  12. 1909 Graffham, Surrey (baptism of Margaret Alice)

1931 Glenwoods, Guildown Road, Guildford, Surrey (Surrey Electoral Roll) At the same address were the following: Cyril BAXENDALE, Margaret Olive BAXENDALE, Olive Florence BAXENDALE, Ellen Murrant and Minnie WOOLGAR which suggest she was a servant to Cyril and his family.
1932 Glenwoods, Guildown Road, Guildford, Surrey (Surrey Electoral Roll)

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
