  1. 1861 Census - Brabourne, Kent
  2. 1871 Census - Cottage, Knatchbull Row, Smeeth, Kent - the 1871 Census says that Sarah was born in Smeeth, however the 1861 has a word beginning with B for her birth but it appears shorter than Brabourne which is where Ellen and William their first two children were born.
  3. 1881 Census, Knatchbull Row, Smeeth, Kent. On his Census William and Sarah have their birth place as Brook, Kent, which possibly answers by 1861 query. There is only Henry still with them. It appears on both the 1871 and 1881 their name has been spelt as TENNY not TENNEY. This is as it appears on the actual Census not just on Ancestry.com search facility.
  4. William TENNEY (spelt with the E) was a lodger at Stonehill, Smeeth, Kent. He was unmarried aged 28 a Smith born Smeeth, Kent. He was a lodger in the house of William LANCEFIELD, also a Smith, born Sellinge, Kent and his wife Mary and two children.
  5. I am fairly certain that his is the correct marriage for Ellen. This shows on the BMD site and there is only one partner, when you look for this - a Peter ROOTS, on the 1881 Census there is only one Peter ROOTS in Kent and he is married to an Ellen who was down as born in Smeeth, Kent and is the right age, ie born in 1859. They had a son William P ROOTS age 3 months born High Halden, Kent. Their address was Wagstaff Cottage, High Halden, Kent.
  6. 1891 Census - Still living at Wagstaff Cottage, High Halden, Kent, Peter ROOTS, now 37 and still an Ag Lab born Smaidon, Kent, his wife Ellen ROOTS aged 33 born Smeeth, Kent. William is not on the Census, their only son on the 1881 Census, but there is Arthur ROOTS, son age 6 born High Halden, Kent, Herbert ROOTS, son age 4 born High Halden, Kent, Stephena ROOTS, daughter age 2 born High Halden, Kent and Jesse ROOTS, son age 3 months born High Halden, Kent.
  7. 1891 Census - William TENNEY is down as HENNEY on Ancestry.com, but the Census definitely shows it as TENNEY. He was already married to Isabella INWOOD as above. They were living at Rode Farm Lyminge, Hythe, Kent. William TENNEY was 30 a Blacksmith born Brabourne, Kent his wife Isabella TENNEY was aged 21 and born in Standford, Kent. With them was Ellen TENNEY who must have been a daughter from William's first marriage, she was age 8, a Scholar and born in Dover, Kent. There was also John TENNEY, age 7 a Scholar, born Dover, Kent and Ethel TENNEY a daughter aged 5 also born in Dover, Kent. The 1891 Census was taken on 5th April 1901 and William and Isabella married on the 1st March 1901 so they had been married under five weeks at the time of the Census.
  8. 1891 Census - Henry TENNEY (TENNY) age 25 born Smeeth, Kent a Agricultural Labourer was married to a Jane TENNEY age 26 born Tilmanstone, Kent, there were no children on the 1891 Census. They had a lodger, a George Ashburn, age 20, a Bricklayer, born Brabourne, Kent.
  9. 1901 Census - spelt ROOTES on this census index, which is the way it actually appears on the Census  - Monks? Hill, Biddenden, Kent - Peter ROOTS was 51 and down as an "Ordinary Agricultural Labourer", born Smarden, Kent, Ellen ROOTS, his wife, was 48 and born in Smeeth, Kent, their children on this Census were: Arthur ROOTS, age 16 Ag Man on Farm, born High Halden, Kent, Herbert ROOTES, age 15, Ag Man on Farm, born High Halden, Kent, Stephena ROOTS, age 12 born High Halden, Kent and Ernest ROOTES, age3 born Biddenden, Kent.
  10. 1901 Census - William TENNEY of 1 Woodfield Farm, Cheriton, Kent, was aged 40 and a Stationary Engine Driver, born in Brabourne, Kent, his wife Isabella TENNEY was 34 and born in Standford, Kent. Their children, I think from William's first marriage - it does not appear that their are any children from William's marriage to Isabella, were Ellen Mary TENNEY, age 18 House Maid and Domestic, born Dover, Kent and John William TENNEY, age 17 a Brickyard Carter, born Dover, Kent
  11. 1901 Census - Henry TENNEY shown on this index as JENNEY was living at The Lees, Smeeth, Kent, he was an Agricultural Labourer and was aged35 born in Smeeth, Kent, his wife Jane was 36 and born in Tilmanstone, Kent. There were still no children for this couple. I had failed to date to find Sarah TENNEY the mother of Henry, who I had down as dying in 1907, however on bringing up this Census, I find that she is living next door to Henry at The Lees, Smeeth, Kent.  She is a Widow and aged 76, born Brook, Kent

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
