1914 - The British Light Cruiser "HMS PATHFINDER", was patrolling the Scottish North Sea Coast in the first Autumn of the first World War. On the 5th September 1914 the U-boat, SMU-21, captained by Otto HERSING, was looking for Leith-bound merchantman to sink when it saw HMS PATHFINDER leaving Rosyth harbour in the FIrth of Forth.
The U-boat fired a single torpedo, hitting HMS PATHFINDER in the area below the magazine. The torpedo caused a fire which exploded PATHFINDER's ammunition supply sending her to a watery grave.
HMS PATHFINDER was the first British Warship sunk in the war, and the first ship to be sunk by a submarine. There was 256 dead with 11 survivors. The wreck of the ship in included on the Maritime War Graves List which is a Roll of Honour of United Kingdom vessels which are to be found on the continental shelf around the British Isles. The names of the men who died on the PATHFINDER are on the Chatham Memorial in Kent. In addition, the names of various individuals are to be found on the War Memorials of the sailor's own home towns.

    Surname: TERRY
    DOB: Circa 1880
    Age: 34
    Nationality: British
    Date of Death: 05/09/1914
Information: HUSBAND OF ALICE MARGARET TERRY, OF 23, AVENUE RD., RAMSGATE, KENT.
    Rank: Petty Officer Stoker
    Service Number: 293803
    Campaign Medals:
    1914 Star
The 1914 Star was instituted in 1917 for service ashore in France and Flanders between 5 August and 22 November 1914. In 1919 a clasp bearing the above dates was authorised and given to those individuals who had actually been under fire between the prescribed dates, popularly known as the 'Mons star' there were 378,000 awarded in total.
The 1914/15 Star was instituted in 1918 and awarded to those individuals who saw service in France and Flanders from 23 November 1914 to 31 December 1915, and to those individuals who saw service in any other operational theatre from 5 August 1914 to 31 December 1915.
A person who served during the period of 05/08/1914 and 31/12/1915 would have been awarded one or the other of the 'stars' (ie either the 1914 star which has '1914' on the scroll OR the 1914-15 star which has '1914-15' on the scroll, NOT both. 2,366,000 awarded in total.
    Victory Medal
Given the information we have available it is likely that Charles Henry TERRY was entitled to the Victory medal, also called the Inter Allied Victory Medal. This medal was awarded to all who received the 1914 Star or 1914-15 Star and, with certain exceptions, to those who received the British War Medal. It was never awarded alone. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.
Eligibility for this award consisted of having been mobilised, fighting, having served in any of the theatres of operations, or at sea, between midnight 4th/5th August, 1914, and midnight, 11th/12th November, 1918. Women who served in any of the various military organisations in a theatre of operations were also eligible.
    British War Medal
From the information available to us, it is very possible that Charles Henry TERRY was entitled to the British War Medal for service in World War One. This British Empire campaign medal was issued for services between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918.
The medal was automatically awarded in the event of death on active service before the completion of this period.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
