  1. 1798 Heaton, Birstall, Yorkshire (baptism of Hannah)
1801 Heaton Lane, Birstall, Yorkshire (baptism of Amelia)
1841 Census - Upper Lane, Birstall, Cleckheaton, Yorkshire
  2. 1776 Birstall, Yorkshire (Father down on IGI on a form submitted by a member as Ignatious BROOKE) Mother is down as a Susanna PLATTS on another IGI entry submitted by a member of the IGI. On Ancestry.com Yorkshire marriages Ignatious BROOK married 26th September 1776 in St Peter, Bristall, Yorkshire Susanna PLATTS, the witnesses are down as John PLATTS and Samuel PLATTS. There is a lot of information for this family on Ancestry Yorkshire BMD 1512-1812 but it needs some careful sorting out to make sure correct families are together.
1798 Heaton, Birstall, Yorkshire (baptism of Hannah)
1801 Heaton Lane, Birstall, Yorkshire (baptism of Amelia)
1841 Census - Upper Lane, Birstall, Cleckheaton, Yorkshire
  3. 1798 Heaton, Birstall, Yorkshire (baptism of Hannah)
  4. 1801 Heaton Lane, Birstall, Yorkshire (baptism of Amelia)
  5. I am told they had two children, John Shepard 24 July 1825 and William Shepard 3 April 1831 (I would at this stage assume these are baptisms)
1851 Upper Lane, Cleckheaton, Yorkshire, Children Luke aged 15, John aged 15, Sarah aged 13, William aged 11 and Frederick aged 7 all born Yorkshire. (ages were round up and down on this Census)
1851 Upper Lane, Cleckheaton, Yorkshire, Children William aged 19 a Mechanic born Cleckheaton, Yorkshire and Frederick aged 16 a Wire Drawer born Cleckheaton, Yorkshire, There was also a Susahanna?  (sic) BROWN down as Daughter aged 22 a Widow born Cleckheaton, Yorkshire and her daughter Ann BROWN down as Granddaughter aged 6 months also born Cleckheaton, Yorkshire.
The baptisms for the SHEPHERD children all took place at Whitechapel, Cleckheaton, Yorkshire
Sarah Ann born 16th March 1822, baptised 25th May 1822, Living at Cleckheaton, father a Wire Drawer
Luke born 27th February 1823, baptised 30th March 1823, Living at Ovenden, father a Wire Drawer
John born 22nd May 1825, baptised 24th July 1825, Living at Cleckheaton, father a Wire Drawer
William born 21st February 1831, baptised 3rd April 1831, Living at Cleckheaton, father a Wire Drawer
Frederick born 2nd March 1834, baptised 27th April 1834, Living at Cleckheaton, father a Wire Drawer
  6. 1841 Census - Upper Lane, Birstall, Cleckheaton, Yorkshire.
1851 Census - Upper Lane, Birstall, Cleckheaton, Yorkshire. Eight children on this Census.
1861 Census - Upper Lane, Birstall, Cleckheaton, Yorkshire. Six children and a grandson on this Census.
  7.
  8. 1841 Census - Birstall, Yorkshire. (Have now found on this Census and also on the IGI so first wife was a Mary.
1851 Census - Spin?, Gomersal, Yorkshire. Because of the place and the occupation I am sure this is the correct John, however he is down as being 41 so shown slightly younger than he actually, was, I only have his birth as shown on the IGI for baptism as Birstall, on this Census it is shown as Cleckheaton but they appear to be the same place or very near to each other, then his wife Maria is shown as being 26 but there is a child Henry 15 another Ann 13 which would make Maria only 11 years old when she had Henry and 13 when she had Ann so I think this must be a second marriage, the next child is Sarah 8 which again could be a child of the first wife as then we have John William 2 and Sophia 1 which I would think are the children of Maria. As Maria is so much younger than John I would think that is why he has said he is younger than he actually was. Will try and find on other censuses
1861 Census - Spin Lane, Gomersal, Yorkshire. There was a Mary Jane HARTLEY, aged 14, down as daughter in law, a Cloth Birler born Mirfield, Yorkshire with the family. I would therefore assume it was a daughter of Maria and that Maria has been married before she married John, so in fact her maiden name would not have been HARTLEY. Have left as I have it on chart above until I find further information.
  9. 1841 Census - Queen Street, Wardleworth, Rochdale, Yorkshire
1851 Census - Meal Bank Scalthwaiterigg, Westmoreland
1861 Census - Upper Lane, Cleckheaton, Yorkshire.
1871 Census - Westgate, Cleckheaton, Yorkshire
    1891 Census - 91 Westgate, Cleckheaton, Yorkshire

  10.
  11. 1851 30 Henry Street, Castleton Within, Castleton, Lancashire.
  12. 1851 Census - Upper Lane, Birstall, Cleckheaton, Yorkshire
1861 Census - Upper Lane, Birstall, Cleckheaton, Yorkshire
  13. 1841 Census - Upper Lane, Birstall, Cleckheaton, Yorkshire
1861 17 Brieley Avenue, Ardwick, Manchester, Lancashire. (at this stage this is only a possibly) There is a Samuel THORNTON at this address born Cleckheaton, Yorkshire.  He is married to Esther and they have two children Lucy A born D??woth, Yorkshire and Agnes born Rochdale Lancashire. The age for Samuel is 41 so born in 1820 but I know he was born in 1822 so hence the query.
1881 Windsor Road, Levenshulme, Lancashire. They had a child Agnes THORNTON born 1856 Rochdale Lancashire. With the family was a Susannah M. REDDISH Sister in Law aged 63 Independant born Morttram, Cheshire.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
