A search was made of documents in class WO97 at the Public Record Office at Kew. These documents are for soldiers who received pensions, so we should have found Thomas or Arthur. We did find quite a few WHEATON's, but not this one! However, there is another box to search entitled "misfiled". Research is therefore "ongoing".
    Information from Malcolm DANIELLS 20/1/2007
Thomas was a long term regular soldier and travelled overseas a lot. I believe he was awarded the DCM during the Boer war. This medal was given for distinguished conduct in the field and is next in line to the VC for NCO's, and he was very proud of it.
    Information from Malcolm DANIELLS 31/1/2007
Thomas Arthur WHEATON dropped the name Thomas for most of his life and was a regular soldier from 1882/1883 (he was a corporal in 1884 when 18 years old) in the 1st Battalion Suffolk Regiment. His service number was 464
He was a sergeant in 1889 when he married Emma CATLETT in Wood Green. I cannot recall this place being mentioned at any time in my life, it is possible that it was a posting.
The birth of their daughter Harriet in India also indicates a posting. No mention of Harriet was ever made in my hearing. Not much is known about Arthur WHEATON's service life apart from South Africa and I'm hoping that there may be something about this in the Suffolk Archives in Bury St Edmunds.
He was in South Africa throughout the Boer War which ran from 1899 - 1902, was mentioned in despatches and awarded the DCM in 1902. London Gazette references are given below:
    LG 27353 10 September 1901
    LG 27459 29 July 1902
    LG 27490 31 October 1902
Emma CATLETT died young at 44 and it is an interesting coincidence that she and Emma WHEATON's first husband, Robert MOUAT, both died in the Billericay area. Arthur and Emma MOUAT were married almost immediately on the deaths of their respected spouses and my mother came along very soon after
Emma's first husband was, as we deduced, Robert MOUAT and 76 Morant Road is in the area that my mother said that they lived. It is close to Marriages Mill where he was said to work and died due to an industrial accident. I cannot imagine why his death certificate was registered in Billericay.
The date of Arthur's pensionable age seems about right but he must have had some role in WW1 as he also received the two general service medals applicable to that conflict. We have a photo of him with some comrades in what looks like a cookhouse scene. Maybe he took on the Alexandra Pub on retirement and then went back into the Army in a non combat role.

    Information from Malcolm DANIELLS 20/1/2007
"My Mother told me that Robert died in a work related accident at Marriages Mill in Colchester"
    Information from Malcolm DANIELLS 24/2/2007
"I have found an possible explanation for the deaths of Emma CATLETT and Robert MOUAT in Billericay. A friend living there has told me that it contained one of the largest poor hospitals [some times called work houses) in the area and seriously ill people ended up there.
We know that Emma CATLETT died in 1909, as did Robert MOUAT, and family history says that Robert died of complications resulting from an industrial accident.
This would show a reason for Arthur WHEATON and Emma MOUAT née ROSE to be visiting Billericay and this could be how they met.
The same friend also said that a Wheelwright had Joinery and Blacksmithing skills which ties up Roberts trade"

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
