    “SUICIDE AT BERMONDSEY
On Wednesday evening Mr. William Carter, coroner for East Surrey, held an inquiry at the St. George’s Tavern, Fort Road, Bermondsey, as to the death of John Terry, aged 49, by occupation a ship’s fireman, and lately residing at No. 6, Ridge Street, Bermondsey.
Mary Ann Terry deposed that the deceased was her husband. He had not done any work since last October, through an affection of the spine brought on by overwork. In consequence of his inability to work, witness had to go out to work to maintain the family. This fact seemed to prey on the deceased’s mind, and he often remarked that he would not trouble witness much longer. On Monday night, (Bank Holiday), witness left him at home when she went out to nurse an invalid, and on returning home at 8 o’clock on Tuesday morning was alarmed at finding bedroom door locked. She called in a policeman and on an entrance being gained the deceased was found dead.
Police constable Edward Gulliver, 359 M, stated that he was called to 6, Ridge Street, by the last witness, and found the front room on the ground floor locked from the inside. Witness gained entrance to the room by the front, and on entering found the deceased in a sitting posture on the floor by the bedside, with a plaid scarf round his neck, the other end of which was fastened to the top rail of the bedstead. Witness cut the scarf and sent for medical aid, but on the arrival of the doctor, life was pronounced extinct.
The jury returned a verdict of suicide while mentally deranged.”
    Note:
Her name was Sarah Ann Terry, whether this was a mistake in the report, or she was known as Mary is not known.
    Information from Alexandra APPLEBY
Her father remembers seeing a sampler/tapestry hanging on the wall of his father's house in Ipswich which had been done by Sarah BEANEY Age 12.

  5. 1851 1 Regent Place, Ramsgate, Kent
1861 Census - A James MILLER, aged 18 an Apprentice Bootmaker, born Ramsgate, Kent, was living with a family the family of George LAMBERT Bootmakers at 2 High Street, Folkstone, Kent. I think this is the correct James MILLER, correct age and birthplace and it ties up with his first occupation.
    1871 Southwood, St Lawrence, Kent
I have found a marriage on the BMD for a Elizabeth BEANEY in December 1876 in Thanet, Kent. I am fairly sure that this is the person. She was single in 1871 and we have no information for her after that date. There are two marriages on a page so she could have married a James Henry MILLER of a Charles James GIFFORD. I then searched for both these name using Elizabeth MILLER/GIFFORD, with the right age and born in Ramsgate, Kent. The Elizabeth MILLER gave me a result on the 1881 Census. However although married in 1876 there were children older than this marriage all given as sons and daughters. I looked on the 1871 Census and found James Henry MILLER with these children but with a wife Matilda? MILLER born in Reading. I therefore think that this wife died between 1871 and 1876 and he remarried our Elizabeth. She then had two children by James Henry MILLER. I will in the following notes show the Census returns for 1871 to 1901 for this family and will add a Chart at sometime for the family, as I am sure I will find marriages and children of the children of this family as some of them do not appear on the later Censuses.
1881 Census - 19 Sussex Street, Ramsgate, Kent - The family of James Henry MILLER was as follows: James Henry MILLER, age 38 Letter Carrier, born Ramsgate, Kent, Elizabeth MILLER, wife, age 39 born Ramsgate, Kent, John R MILLER, son age 13 Telegraph Messenger, born Ramsgate, Kent, Lucy M MILLER, daughter, age 12, Scholar, born Ramsgate, Kent, William C MILLER, son age 9 born Ramsgate, Kent, George Walter MILLER, son, age 7 born Ramsgate, Kent, Stephen I MILLER, son age 3 born Ramsgate, Kent and Frederick C MILLER, son age 1 born Ramsgate, Kent.
1891 Census - 79 Hardness Street, Ramsgate, Kent. The family were as follows: James H MILLER Head, age 48, Postman, born Ramsgate, Kent, Elizabeth MILLER, wife, age 48, born Ramsgate, Kent. William MILLER, son age 17 Lamp Lighter Gas, born Ramsgate, Kent, Stephen MILLER son age 13 Telegraph Messenger, born Ramsgate, Kent. Frederick MILLER, son age 11 born Ramsgate, Kent. There was also a Jane MILLER widow, mother age 92 living on own means, born Deal, Kent. (I just think that this is possibly Jane BEANEY née SUTTON as the age is correct, she would have been a widow as her husband died in 1863 and she was baptised in Dover, Kent, (near to Deal), but of course it could be the mother of James Henry MILLER as it would be if he had given the details.)
1901 Census - 9 Boundary Road, Ramsgate, Kent - James H MILLER aged 58, Retired Postman, born Ramsgate, Kent, Elizabeth MILLER, wife, age 59, born Ramsgate, Kent, Stephen MILLER, son, age 23 Able Seaman, RN Navy Man born Ramsgate, Kent.
  6. 1851 1 Regent Place, Ramsgate, Kent
    1861 20 Regent Place, Ramsgate, Kent (3 families - 6 adults, 4 children)
    1871 Southwood, St Lawrence, Kent
Cannot find on any Census after 1871

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
