There are children William (7) Scholar, John (3) and George (11 months) born Royston, Cambridgeshire, St Lukes, Middlesex and Clerkenwell, Middlesex respectively. Should it be Emily, and do these children belong to her?
1881 30 Northampton Street, Islington, Middlesex as Emily born in St Ives
1891 13 Chalfont Road, Islington, London as Emily born in St Ives
1901 12 Hornsey Street, Lower Holloway, Islington, London as a widow
On her birth certificate, and that of her sister and brothers, no father is entered, and their mother is Rebecca
On her marriage certificate her father is shown as William WHEATON, Labourer.
Where is there information which could match these details?
    1. Rebecca WHEATON baptised 1795 daughter of Robert and Catherine, wife of William WHEATON
They married in 1821 and had two children, Charles and Catherine both baptised in 1825. William WHEATON was not living with a wife in 1841, and in 1851 said that he was a widower.
However, they could have parted, and Rebecca had three children with an unknown father. William was still alive in 1870 when Emily married, and perhaps there had been a reconciliation. On the other hand, if the WHEATON family was a close-knit one, perhaps she was brought up by William's father, also a William.
On the other hand, Rebecca would have been at about 48 when Martha was born, least 50 when Charles was born, and 52 when Emily was born. And would she have given this son the same name as her first-born? We do not think this is the right Rebecca.
    2. Rebecca WHEATON living with Robert and Catherine in 1841. The ages of all three do not coincide with the dates we have for their births but it seems likely that the Robert on the census (born 1781 instead of 1772) is the son of William and Elizabeth WHEATON, and that the ages were wrongly given, or written down. There is about a ten year difference for the two adults which might be acceptable when the ages involved are 60 and 70.
But what of the Rebecca? Her age is given as 14 years old. Robert and Catherine's daughter would bave been 47 year old. If a mistake was made, a 33 year difference is somewhat different to the 10 year difference in the ages given for Robert and Catherine. Perhaps this Rebecca was a granddaughter. In 1843 she would have been 15 years, so could just have been the mother of Charles. But why did Emily give William WHEATON as her father's name? Robert and Catherine did not name any of their sons William.
If Rebecca was born in 1827 as calculated from the age on the 1841 Census, and she was a granddaughter of Robert and Catherine, which of their children was her parent?
i Jane married in 1812, so would have been a COUSINS in 1827
ii Rebecca married in 1821 to William WHEATON (See 1 above) She and William could have been the mother of this other Rebecca, born 1827, and this would fit in with the other two children, both baptised in 1825. If the mother, Rebecca, had died before 1841 as originally deduced from details on the 1841 Census for William, perhaps the daughter, Rebecca, went to live with her grandparents. Perhaps they were concerned that they might not be able to keep her as they were so much older, which is why they indicated that they were younger than their true ages on the 1841 census. The mother
of Emily named her son Charles, which, if she is part of the William/Rebecca WHEATON family means she gave him the same name as her brother.
It would also follow that perhaps, if Emily was in contact with her mother's father, she might have thought of him, not as her grandfather, but as her father. On the other hand, she might just have wanted a name on the marriage certificate.
iii Ann married in 1820 so would have been a HALL in 1827
iv Richard married in 1825, his daughter was born 1826 and he died in 1838. We have no information about what happened to the daughter, or the wife. It is possible that Rebecca the daughter could belong in this family. But, why did Emily say her father was William?
v Sophia married 1823 so would have been AUBREY in 1827
vi Elizabeth married in 1828, so it is possible for her to be the mother. But again, where did the name William WHEATON come from for Emily's father?
vii Phoebe died 1829, age 17, so as she would have been 15 in 1827 it is just possible that  she could have been Rebecca's mother
viii Daniel, would only have been 13 in 1827
ix Isaac, similarly, he would have been too young.
    3. Rebecca WHEATON née WEST or BECK, wife of Robert WHEATON. The couple were together with two of their children in Somersham in 1841, and on their own there in 1851. A Rebecca WHEATON, wife of Robert WHEATON died in 1853, so it seems unlikely that this Rebecca is the mother of Emily and her brothers.
There are no other Rebeccas in our WHEATON family, or in other records in the counties of Huntingdonshire or Cambridgeshire
Given all the foregoing, it seems most likely that William WHEATON and his wife Rebecca
(née WHEATON), had a daughter Rebecca, whose baptism we have not found. From census information it would seem that William's wife died young which could have left him with at least three children born before 1827, so perhaps under 10 years of age. His wife's parents, Robert and Catherine, took one of the children, Rebecca, born 1827, into their home. They were concerned because they were getting on in years, so when asked for their ages for the 1841 census they made out they were ten years younger than they actually were. Their granddaughter, Rebecca, was at this time 14, and working as a female servant. Two years later Rebecca gave birth to her first child, Martha, followed by Charles. Emily, Arthur, and after his death, another Arthur.
It is obvious that the decision to include Rebecca as a child of William WHEATON and Rebecca WHEATON is based on supposition. We look forward to hearing from anyone who has information to prove or disprove our conclusions.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
