There is a lot of information about Alfred Brant COLEMAN, the following is an article from the "Burlington Historical Society"
The following article by Dorothy Turcotte is taken from Burlington: the Growing Years. It’s one in a series provided by the Burlington Historical Society.
Alfred B. Coleman was born in Woolwich, England in 1865 and came to Canada with his parents when he was still a boy. The family first settled in Hamilton then came to Burlington.
At the age of 13, A.B. as he was known, worked on Mr. Bell’s Lockhart Road farm for 50 cents a day. He was always interested in building and as a young man taught himself to make and read blueprints. By the time he was 21, he owned the Ontario Street planing mill, which later became Nicholson’s. Soon he was fulfilling his dream of building homes.
One of these was the ‘Gingerbread House’ located at 1375 Ontario St., across from St. Luke’s Church. This unusual building incorporates many interesting architectural features. Coleman lived in this house until 1899, when he purchased the Brant House property and built a huge modern hotel on the site and named it the Brant Hotel. It immediately became the holiday resort of choice for many Canadians and Americans. Steamers came from Hamilton to the dock in front of the hotel bringing crowds of guests for picnics and day trips.
As soon as the hotel was completed, the Coleman family moved to Toronto where A.B. was involved in several major building projects. In 1909, he and his family returned to Burlington. On his return, he bought a small piece of property across the road from the hotel on the lakefront and called it his country club.
A.B. began to develop the nearby property at the mouth of Indian Creek naming it Indian Point. First he made the development accessible by building a road and foot bridge. Then he laid out a six-hole golf course. Next, he built several large bungalows which he rented to wealthy patrons. This later became an exclusive residential district, with attractive stone gates at each of the two entrances.
When the federal government expropriated the Brant Hotel as a military hospital in 1917. Coleman turned his attention to his country club. He expanded it into a fine hotel with fine dining and dancing and named it the Brant Inn. In 1937 he hired Murray Anderson and Clifford Kendall as managers. When A.B. Coleman died in 1938 this team purchased the Brant Inn from the estate and went on to make it one of the most famous night spots in North America.
  2. 1905 Hamilton, Ontario, Canada (marriage)
    1911 Nelson, Halton, Ontario, Canada
In birth record for son Alfred Brant COLEMAN Semence (1911 census) is shown as Rose Dewitt SAMENA in transcript, in actual document it is Samena Rose De WITT. Mother was Margaret DEWITT on the 1911 census. For birth registration for Margaret she was shown as S R DEWITT. Mary's birth entry show Samena Rose De WITT. At death of husband she was shown as Samena De WITT. Having now found marriage entry which shows Samena Rose DEWITT this is the name now entered for her
1924 Gulf View Hotel, Clearwater, Florida, USA
  3. 1911 Nelson, Halton, Ontario, Canada
Believe they had two children, a son and a daughter
  4. 1911 Nelson, Halton, Ontario, Canada
There is a death for a Mary Electra COLEMAN as shown, and as the age is correct I would have thought with such an unusual name that this must be the correct person, however several trees on Ancestry.com shows a marriage to a Reverend James Gordon COBURN and that they had three children. The Obituary I have found for Mary Electra COLEMAN seems to suggest she was a "Sister" in Holy Orders, so at present I do not know if there were indeed two Mary Electra COLEMAN's of the same age, or possibly after death of her husband she took Holy Orders and reverted to her original name. (Having now looked at several sites on Google I am sure that there was only one Mary Electra COLEMAN and that she used her maiden name). (After references to her name of Mary Electra COLEMAN appears COBURN which was her married name.)
  5. 1911 Nelson, Halton, Ontario, Canada
  6. My sister showed this as a probable child but Ontario death information shows she definitely was as parents are shown as A B COLEMAN and Samena Rose DEWITT
  7. A birth with the correct parents.
1997-1997 F H Kim Krenze was living at 2 Fitzgerald, Lakefield, Ontario, Canada according to the Canadian Phone and Address Directories
    Obituary for Kathleen
    Julia Ann
WESKRENZ, Kathleen DeWitt (formerly PHILLIPS, née COLEMAN)
Daughter of A.B. COLEMAN and Samena DeWitt COLEMAN of Burlington, Ontario, life partner for 64 years to F.H. Kim KRENZ of Lakefield, Ontario; Aunt Kate, Great Aunt Kate, and Great, Great Aunt Kate to the Baines's, the Coburns, the Harts, the Sissons', the Jefferys, the Fullertons, the Sturgesses, the McCauleys and their offspring of the extended COLEMAN family in Canada. Kate was predeceased by an earlier husband, Frederick G.C. PHILLIPS, in 1937. Kate left this earth on January 15, 2005, four days after her 92nd birthday, with her beloved Kim at her bedside, at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre. She is sorely missed by her sister Elizabeth McCAULEY of Owen Sound, her sister-in-law Margaret Krenz ST. CLAIR of Ashland, Oregon, brother-in-law George SCHOTCH of Vancouver, and by the Schotches of Halifax, by "adopted daughter" Caroline PEARSON and family of Canton, New York, by Felecia STITCHER of Surprise, Arizona, and by all whose lives she touched during a lifetime spent in Canada, Scotland, and Italy. Her two years with Kim in Italy are recorded in her charming book "Our Love Affair With Italy." Her Italian Friends have remained Friends throughout her life. Kate was a beautiful woman, vivacious and full of fun, and was a pillar of goodness, with consideration and concern for everyone she met. With no children of her own, she enriched the lives of many children, and the lives of their parents. Cremation is to be managed by the Hendren Funeral Home of Lakefield. A service of remembrance will be held in Saint John's Anglican Church, Lakefield on Wednesday, January 19th, 2005 at 11: 00 am. The interment of her ashes and a memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Saint John's this coming spring at a date to be announced. Memorial donations may be made to the Lakefield Public Library as expressions of sympathy. Friends may send condolences or make donations at www.hendrenfuneralhome.com
  8. A Family Tree on Ancestry.com shows this child. I have my doubts about the death date shown as she is mentioned as sister of Kathleen in Kathleen's obituary in 2005 as though she was still alive at that time.
  9. A Family Tree on Ancestry.com shows this child
  10. A Family Tree on Ancestry.com shows this child

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
