  1. 1841 Census - Great Hyde, Little Barfield, Essex.
1851 Census - Henham Lodge, Henham, Essex. There was an Ann RAY sister of wife, aged 63 an Annuitant born Ikleton, Cambridgeshire and a Sarah CHANDLER, a servant aged 19 born Eastern, Essex with the family.
1861 Census - High Street, Saffron Walden, Essex. Ann RAY, Sarah's sister was still with them and there was a visitor a Martha PERRY, aged 25 born Widdington, Essex with them, Martha married Ebenezer COWELL later the same year.
IGI marriage and death from information submitted by a member of the LDS
IGI information supplied by a member of the LDS Church has the birth of Peter in 1793, but death as I have it, it says his parents were Jasper COWELL and Mary EVES,
  2. 1841 Great Hyde, Little Barfield, Essex.
1851 Census - Henham Lodge, Henham, Essex. There was an Ann RAY sister of wife, aged 63 an Annuitant born Ikleton, Cambridgeshire and a Sarah CHANDLER, a servant aged 19 born Eastern, Essex with the family
1861 Census - High Street, Saffron Walden, Essex. Ann RAY, Sarah's sister was still with them and there was a visitor a Martha PERRY, aged 25 born Widdington, Essex with them, Martha married Ebenezer COWELL later the same year..
IGI marriage and maiden name from information submitted by a member of the LDS
  3. 1841 Census - Great Hyde, Little Barfield, Essex.
1851 Census - Ashdon, Essex. They had two servants, Betsey LISTER, 33 a House Servant born Ashdon, Essex, and a Pharoh LISTER aged 18 a Farm Labourer born Ashdon, Essex.
1861 Census - Radwinter Road, Ashdon, Essex. (do not know what A Bell 5  B? after Farmer means but think is mean he employed 5 men as that is how all of the Heads are listed). They had the following children all born Ashdon, Essex, Elizabeth 5, Alice 4 and Peter G 2, they also had with them a George S SMITH a Farmers Apprentice aged 19 born Bardfield, Essex, he has the number 8-1-0 with his occupation, Elizabeth LISTER aged43 a Domestic Servant born Ashdon Essex is still with them and there is also a Sarah RICHARDSON aged 15 a Domestic Servant born Debden, Essex.
1871 Census - Ashby Hall, Ashby, Suffolk. They appear to have moved to Suffolk, the Household was as follows: Peter COWELL Head (details as above), Elizabeth Wife (details as above) then Elizabeth H aged16 a Scholar, born Ashdon, Essex, Alice S aged 14 a Scholar, born Ashdon, Essex, Peter G aged 12 a Scholar, born Ashdon, Essex, Rosetta R aged 10 a Scholar, born Ashdon, Essex, John R aged 8 a Scholar, born Ashdon, Essex, Lauretta E aged 5 a Scholar born Ashdon, Essex, then there are the following, Martha ELLARD, aged 20 a visitor an Instructress, born Yarmouth, Norfolk, Arthur B ROTHWELL a pupil, aged 17 an Apprentice, born St Johns Wood, London, Middlesex, Rosa OSBORNE, aged 19 a Housemaid, born Blundeston, Suffolk, Eliza LEGGETT aged 20 a Dairymaid born Lound, Suffolk, and Ellen HEPPERSON, aged 16 a Scullerymaid, born Lowestoft, Suffolk
1881 Census - Houses Farm, Great Sampford, Essex. Peter appears to have a different wife and there is only one child with them Elizabeth aged 25 born Ashdon, Essex, I am certain correct family as Elizabeth LISTER now 63 and down as a Dairy Woman is with them and she appears on the 1851 and 1861 Census. Also Peter's new wife was born in Suffolk which is where they were in 1871. There was a visitor and another servant on the Census.
1901 Census - Hill Place, Great Bardfield, Essex. There was just Peter and Anna (no children) but they had a servant a Minnie RIDGEWELL.
IGI baptism information, from exact records.
The marriage which I am certain is correct shows two Elizabeth's, GIBLIN and WESSON, I think is was more than likely GIBLIN and Peter's brother Jasper married a GIBLIN, as did his brother Joseph. Having found the GIBLIN family with Elizabeth the correct age I have removed the name WESSON from the above Chart.
  4. 1841 - Not with parents on this Census
1851 Census - Henham Lodge, Henham, Essex. There was an Ann RAY sister of wife, aged 63 an Annuitant born Ikleton, Cambridgeshire and a Sarah CHANDLER, a servant aged 19 born Eastern, Essex with the family.
1861 Census - 30 Pelham Street, Hastings in the Castle, Hastings, Sussex. John and Ann were visitors with a David PARKES and his wife Harriett and his family. David was a Plasterer.
1871 Census - Galverston Farm, Ashdon, Essex. Two visitors and two servants on this Census.
1881 Census - Goldston Farm, Redwinter Road, Ashdon, Essex. (was this really the same farm as the 1871 Census)?, It would appear that John had married again to a Susannah, I think it is this Susannah who is with Sarah MOSTYN née COWELL, the youngest child above, on the 1901 Census). With the was a Laurette Emily COWELL a niece aged 15 born Ashdon, Essex, a Scholar, also two servant. One of these is a Lydia Sarah LISTER aged 16 born Ashdon, Essex, the name LISTER has come up as servants for other COWELL families, the other was Elizabeth Susannah MARSH, aged 21 also born Ashdon, Essex
IGI baptism information, from exact records.
So why did John remarry in Cumberland when he came from Essex and his new wife came from Camberwell, it would appear that she was related, to his first wife, possibly her sister. His brother Thomas had also married a member of this family.
  5. 1841 Census - Great Hyde, Little Barfield, Essex.
1861 Census - Cottages, Bartlow, Essex. They had a son Joseph Frederick aged2 months born Bartlow Hamlet, Essex.

1901 Census - Manuden Hall, Manuden, Essex. Children - Lydia F 38 Living on Own Income, Julia 31 Living on Own Income both born Manuden, Essex. There was a Servant and a Visitor on this Census.
IGI baptism information, from exact records.
Lydia's parents on the IGI are down as William and Hannah
  6. 1841 Census - Great Hyde, Little Barfield, Essex.
1851 Census - Henham Lodge, Henham, Essex. There was an Ann RAY sister of wife, aged 63 an Annuitant born Ikleton, Cambridgeshire and a Sarah CHANDLER, a servant aged 19 born Eastern, Essex with the family.
1861 Census - Great Gloucester Road? Islington, Middlesex. Two sons on this Census, Jasper G COWELL aged 4 born Islington, Middlesex and William I aged 2 born Islington, Middlesex and a daughter, Julia aged 8 months born Islington, Middlesex. With the family, as a visitor was Thomas B COWELL (a brother of Jasper's) he is down as being 25 born Great Bardfield, Essex, he is down as a Classical and Mathecal? Tutor, (other wording I cannot read under this). Then there is a Susannah A GIBLIN? (cannot make out last name exactly, but have found that Jasper married Sarah GIBLIN so it appears Susannah was her sister), aged 21 a Fund Holder, born Ashdon, Essex and a servant a Rhoda F HETHERIDGE, aged 18 born Ashdon, Essex
1871 Census - Not found at present
1881 Census - Not found at present
1891 Census - Church Walk, Seldon, Worthing, Sussex. It would appear that Jasper married again and had more children by his second wife. The children on this Census were Annie M aged 28 Islington, Middlesex, then the following who I think are children of his second marriage, Ernest 5 a Scholar, born Clapton, London, Percy C 3 born Worthing, Sussex, Irene M 1 born Worthing, Sussex and Stewart J aged 2 months born Worthing, Sussex. There were two servants, one of them a Nurse.
1901 Census - Goring Road, Steyning St Andrew, Sussex. Children Annie 38 Islington, Middlesex, Minnie 34 Islington, Middlesex a Hospital Nurse, Ernest 15 Clapton, Middlesex, Irene 11 Worthing, Sussex, Stuart 10 born Worthing, Sussex. There were two nieces with the family, Annie MARSHALL, (Single) aged 26 born St John's Wood, Middlesex and Ada MARSHALL (married) aged 31, born Braintree, Essex ( I think the second one is the daughter of Sarah COWELL, the youngest sister of Jasper who married John MOSTYN, she appears on the 1891 Census, (see note 9) as being 21 and born in Braintree, so I would think this is the correct person, and I have found she married a James Arnott MARSHALL in the September quarter of 1897 in the Bishops Stortford district, Essex so certain correct. There was also two servants.
IGI baptism information, from exact records.
Julia's parents on the IGI are down as William and Hannah
  7. 1841 Census - Great Hyde, Little Barfield, Essex.  Father Peter, Mother Sarah, four siblings with Ebenezer. The IGI shows the baptism of Ebenezer from records, at Bailey Lane Particular Baptist. There are five other COWELL baptisms at the same church with Peter and Sarah as the parents

1900 US Census  - 1900; Census Place: Union, Clay, Kansas; Roll: T623 474; Page: 2B; Enumeration District: 7.- There was a Granddaughter an Emma K MOUTELL, born February 1888,  (age 12) born Kansas, USA, At School, living with them. They are next door to Alfred YARROW and family.
Ebenezer and family emigrated to the US on the "Sythia" from Liverpool arriving in New York on 18th December 1884.

Children Lilian Annie aged 29 a Mathematical Teacher born Dulwich, London, Harold 23 a Commercial Traveller, born Dulwich, London, Frank, 19 a Commercial Clerk born Somerleyton, Suffolk, There was a visitor and a servant on this  Census. (it appears that they had moved back to London, but Thomas was a Farm Manager in London)
1901 Census - High Street, Brasted, Kent. Thomas had married again, although a Farmer for most of his life has put himself down as a Retired School Master which appears to be what he possibly was on the 1861 Census. No family with them.

1851 Census - Henham Lodge, Henham, Essex. There was an Ann RAY sister of wife, aged 63 an Annuitant born Ikleton, Cambridgeshire and a Sarah CHANDLER, a servant aged 19 born Eastern, Essex with the family.

I put this Chart on because of Ebenezer and I was interested to see if any other members of the family had gone to the US. Having found all of the family on various Censuses this was not the case, but it has turned out to be most interesting. Three of the family appeared to have married sisters from one family (GIBLIN), whilst two others did the same (LOW) the youngest daughter married a Baptist Minister, this goes along with the fact that they were baptised in a Baptist church in Saffron Walden, They all appears to be quite well off, and although some were in London at some stage they then went to being Farmers in the Country. A lot of work to put all the charts on for the children, and I might not do this as they are a long way from my own family. There were also three second marriages so it has all become rather complex.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
