  1. 1851 Census - Cannot find any definite William GLOVER born 1826 Marylebone on this Census, so I have not been able to trace any further back on this family. Only two William GLOVER's born in Middlesex in 1826 one is the son of a John GLOVER who is a servant to the Queens Household and the other is a Visitor, so no real details but he is a Mariner. William and Sarah married very soon after the Census date, so I thought something would give me a clue to where they were on this Census. The census witnesses do not appear to be part of the family. And according to the marriage certificate the father of William should be a Samuel. a Carpenter, so I think this definitely discounts the Queens Household servant John. On the marriage certificate of William and Sarah the occupation for William is difficult to read, but it could be Mariner, but if this is the case as the other one was a visitor it gives us no further information.

Various letters between Elsie COWDELL née POLTON to her sister Maud HUNT née POLTON in Newfoundland in 1948 and 1968, copies of which were given to me in July 1999 show various pieces of information for this family, in one a reference is made to an Uncle Will, who had died by 1968, could be this William.
1914 6 Troutbeck Road, New Cross, London (London Electoral Roll) - Address given but also at 229 Rotherhithe New Road, Rotherhithe, London with brother Ernest Arthur.
1918 GLOVER William Henry of 2 Studley-avenue Higham Park Chingford Essex died 23 March 1918 Administration London 23 July to Henrietta Louisa Glover widow Effect £249 7s. 6d. (National Probate Calendar)

On the 1891 Census Samuel and Jane were in Southwick, Fareham, Hampshire. There was definitely the family together at this time with Samuel, Jane and the two children shown. Living at the same address was a James HOLLAND aged 73 and his wife Ann aged 74. I am at the present time assuming they were her parents as that is where she says she was born. In this case it is possible either that she was ill, or pregnant and from either of these she might have died. By 1901 Samuel had a new wife and was living in Camberwell, London. It is of course possible they were divorced and he remarried, but this was not very likely at that time. Will try to find a death for Jane to confirm one way or the other.
  5. 1861 Census - 156 Upper Thames Street, All Hallows the Great Middlesex. There was a visitor a James CREGG aged 28 a Schoolmaster born Hungary, with the family.

1911 Census - 14 Grove Green Road Leytonstone E. There is a Rosina Ellen SYKES aged 41 a Boarder, Married born Devonport, Devon with the family.
In a letter between Elsie COWDELL née POLTON and Maud HUNT née POLTON she refers to a Sarah, as dead in 1968 but goes on to talk about her Stepdaughters, so only assume she married a widower and took on at least two girls.
  7. 1864 156 Upper Thames Street, All Hallows the Great Middlesex (baptisms of Sarah, Louisa and Ernest)
1871 The Bell, 3 Bush Lane City of London

1891 Census - Swanley Convalescence Home, Sutton-at-Hone, Kent. Down as being born in London, as Louisa S, correct age and as occupation is down as Barmaid I do think this is the correct person.
1911 Census - 32 Gordon Road Ilford Essex  as a widow. with her was a Denis MAHONEY Boarder Married M 70 1841 Pensioned Chief Officer Coast Guard born Kinsale Ireland Resident
Named by Maude Elizabeth POLTON née THOROGOOD and Elsie May COWDELL née POLTON as Auntie Lulu on the Group wedding photograph, assume name as Louise address 44 Purcells Avenue Edgwarebury Road Edgeware, Middlesex (this address found in Maude Elizabeth THOROGOODs address book as Miss L GLOVER, (date unknown but would think post 1929) therefore assume she did not get married. (However on the marriage of a daughter of Samuel John GLOVER one of the witnesses is a Louisa Selina SMITH. There was a marriage in March quarter 1892 in Colchester district, Essex of a Louisa Selina SMITH to either a Albert/Arthur SMITH or a George MILLS (the Colchester marriage seems to suggest that the Groom was in the Army)
1949  Eventide Christian Home Grove Park Wanstead Essex (address at probate)
  8. 1864 156 Upper Thames Street, All Hallows the Great Middlesex (baptisms of Sarah, Louisa and Ernest)

Various additional bits in the letters between Elsie COWDELL née POLTON to her sister Maud HUNT née POLTON in Newfoundland in 1948 and 1968 which at present, although I believe relate to the above family, I have not placed as yet.
A Lily Sloane is mentioned, if she comes from this family assume she was a daughter of either Sarah or Louisa and that was the married name, from the letters my calculations make it she was born in 1884, died in 1967 and had a husband Alf Notes 10, 11 and 12 are also from her letters, but as yet cannot even guess at where the connection is
She talks about a Dolly who had a daughter Evelyn, both dead in 1968
A Gus and his wife, who I believe must be to do with the Glover family from the letters, alive in 1968, he had at one stage collected rents for the houses of Lulu and Maud Mary Glover.
Three other people are mentioned Nellie, May and Eddie with the statement in 1968 from Elsie that they had died some years before that date.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
