1801 IGI baptism information - Father John GRIGG, mother Sarah. The IGI has his father John GRIGG down as baptised 16th July 1771, Kent and died 2nd March 1832 St Nicholas, Thanet, Kent, the mother Saray is down as Sarah WOOTEN who died 7th May 1848 at St Nicholas, Thanet, Kent. They married 16th July 1793 Kent. Then looking for siblings for William Randall GRIGG on the IGI there are actual eight as follows (baptism date at St Nicholas at Wade, Kent) Elizabeth 15th November 1793, John 15th February 1795, Edward 5th February 1797, Sarah 17th February 1799, William Randall 8th March 1801, Ann 29th January 1804, Thomas 4th May 1806, Martha 22nd January 1809, James 5th July 1812. (Have included William Randall in list to show where he fits in) 1851 2 Sion Row Cottages, Ramsgate, Kent as GRIGGS 1851 2 Sion Row Cottages, Ramsgate, Kent as GRIGGS 1861 8 Sion Row, Ramsgate, Kent as GRIGG, a widow. Living as "Relative" with John NETHERSOLE (50) Porter, Warm Baths born Broadstairs, Kent and his wife Elizabeth (49) born St Lawrence, Kent. With Mary were her children Sarah (12) and William R (6) both Scholars born Ramsgate, Kent 1871 Not found. 1881 1 Ventnor Villas, Ramsgate, Kent. Mary was a Lodger a Widow aged 64 born Ramsgate, Kent with a George BELSEY aged 72 a Shoemakerborn Ash ???, Kent and his wife Jane aged 74 born St Lawrence Kent and their children Eliza aged 41 a Dressmaker, Edwin I aged 33 a Letter Carrier both born Ramsgate, Kent. There was also a Ellen Jane GRIGG a Granddaughter aged 13 a Scholar born Ramsgate, Kent with the family. 1851 2 Sion Row Cottages, Ramsgate, Kent as GRIGGS 1861 12 Wellington Crescent, Ramsgate, Kent as GRIGES. Servant to Mary HAMMOND (73) Lodging House Keeper born St Lawrence, Kent and her daughter Kate (47) born Sandwich, Kent 1871 1 Claremont Place, East Street,, Newington, London, Elizabeth was a visitor with a George TABRET aged 44 an Engine Driver (Railway) born Moldash, Kent, with him was his wife Elizabeth aged 41 born Ramsgate, Kent, and children Sarah E aged 12 a Scholar, James G aged 9 a scholar born Ramsgate, Lent and Harriet A aged 3 born Newington, Surrey. Also with them was an Elizabeth A GILDAM? Mother in Law a widow born Ash Kent (she was deaf) 1881 9 Back of Adelaide Gardens, Ramgate, Kent. Elizabeth is down as Head unmarried a Laundrywoman. . 1891 20 Augusta Road, Ramsgate, Kent Elizabeth is a Servant to an Isabell Mary CASTLEDEW abed 64 Living on own Means born Soho Square, London, her daughter Isabella Marion CASTLEDEW aged 28 a Governess School, born Harbledon?, Canterbury, Kent 1901 12 Frogley Road, Camberwell, London, She has put herself down as a Widow. 1911 61 Crawthew Grove, East Dulwich S. She is down as single by herself. I am told she on a Family Tree on Ancestry that she died in 1919 but cannot find on BMD at present, on the 1911 she is down as GRIG, on other she is down as GRIGGS so it is quite likely to be there. 1851 2 Sion Row Cottages, Ramsgate, Kent as GRIGGS 1861 Isle of Thanet Workhouse, Minster in Thanet, Kent (RG09 piece 533 folio 36 page 3) Is shown as born Margate, Kent. Is it the right Mary A GRIGGS? Listed as a Labourer's Orphan along with other orphans and the infirm. 1871 5 Albert Street, Ramsgate, Kent. Lodging with them was Frances GREENSTREET? (45) Unmarried Dressmaker born Dover 1881 8 Back of Adelaide Gardens, Ramsgate, Kent 1891 8 Sion Cottages (back of Adelaide Gardens) With the family was a Jane E BELSEY, Granddaughter aged 2 born Minster, Thanet, Kent. William G GRIGG aged 17 a Nephew, an Errand Boy (Port) born Ramsgate, Kent. (I have not placed him with the GRIGG family at present) Found now he was a son of Elizabeth Martha GRIGG who I think did not actually marry but had three children. 1851 2 Sion Row Cottages, Ramsgate, Kent as GRIGGS 1861 8 Sion Row, Ramsgate, Kent as GRIGG, a widow. Mother Mary was living as a "Relative" with John NETHERSOLE (50) Porter, Warm Baths born Broadstairs, Kent and his wife Elizabeth (49) born St Lawrence, Kent. With Mary were her children Sarah (12) and William R (6) both Scholars born Ramsgate, Kent 1871 2 Kempton Road, Camberwell, Surrey. Sarah was a visitor with a William CLARK aged 52 a Gas Fitter born Camberwell, Surrey his wife Justina aged 52 and son Charles J aged 24 a Warehouseman both born Camberwell, Surrey, there was another Visitor and a boarder with the family. (She married the son Charles the same year) 1871 Kimpton Road, Camberwell, London (at marriage) 1881 46 Waghorn St, Camberwell, London. 1882 46 Waghorn Street, Dulwich, London (baptism of Fanny Jestina and Charles William) 1891 28 Waghorn street, Camberwell, London. 1893 46 Waghorn Street, Camberwell, London, (baptism of Ernest George) 1901 46 Waghorn Street, Camberwell, London, , with the family is an Alfred BELSEY a Nephew aged possibly 33 a Decorator born Ramsgate, Kent. Also daughter Frances (Fanny) HALES, her husband Frank and their daughter Emily. 1911 12 Frogley Road, Lordship Lane, East Dulwich, London. Sarah, again down as Louisa is a Widow she is down as Mother aged 60 years having been married 40 years and having had 5 children, 4 of which survive and 1 who has died at the date of this census. She is down as being born in Ramsgate, Kent. She is with her eldest daughter Louisa 1861 8 Sion Row, Ramsgate, Kent as GRIGG, a widow, Mother Mary was living as a "Relative" with John NETHERSOLE (50) Porter, Warm Baths born Broadstairs, Kent and his wife Elizabeth (49) born St Lawrence, Kent. With Mary were her children Sarah (12) and William R (6) both Scholars born Ramsgate, Kent 1881 William GRIGG was on the vessel "Shriver" on the day of the census. Crew of four all married, George DIXON?, the Master, aged 28 born Yarmouth, Suffolk, William GARWOOD the Mate aged 38 born Middlesex, Then William and finally John BISHOP aged 27 an AB Seaman born Brixham, Devon. 1891 Taylor Cottage, Addington? ???, Ramsgate, Kent 1901 7 Castle Road, St Lawrence Intra, Ramsgate, Kent. William and his wife are down as lodgers with a Charles MANTLE? aged 64 a General Labourer born Ash, Kent. Only child William with them 1911 29 Upper Dumpton Park Road, Ramsgate, Kent. (I have not worked the information out on this Census yet, but because of address and age of William GRIGG I am certain it is this person. However he is down as wife's Brother aged 56 a Widower a Mariner born Ramsgate, Kent. He is with a Frederick HORNE aged 36 Married a House Painter, Builder born Ramsgate, Kent, his wife is Louisa HORNE aged 40 she has been married 13 years and has 2 children both of them living at the date of this Census, she was born in Deal, Kent, There the two children Louisa HORNE aged 12 at school born Ramsgate, Kent and Frederick HORNE aged 10 at school born Ramsgate, Kent, then there is Rose GRIGG down as Niece aged 26 single a General servant Domestic born Ramsgate, Kent and Nell GRIGG Niece aged 5 at School born Ramsgate, Kent. I cannot place Louisa, as a brother of William or Rose and Nell GRIGG. (Have now placed Rose as daughter of this William Randall GRIGG. At present the above are the only census returns I have found members of the family on. The following is really just a rambling report, trying to solve who Louisa HORNE on the 1911 was and her relationship to William Randall GRIGG who was with the family and down as wife's (Louisa HORNE's) brother. I believe that the Head on this chart, ie William Randall GREGG had been married before to a Mary TURNER who he married on 4th August 1832 at St George Church, Ramsgate, Kent. (information on Lisa DAWSON's family tree) If this is the case Louisa HORNE might have come from a child of his first marriage. There is a Louisa GRIGGS (with the S) in Frith, Deal, Kent on the 1881 Census aged 9 born Deal, Kent so this ties in with the age of Louisa HORNE on the 1911 Census, but in no way can William be a brother of Louisa, so I think they have the relationship incorrect. Louisa is with a Sarah GRIGG (and I think it is GRIGG nor GRIGGS as Ancestry.com has it) who is 45 years old so born 1836, but again a problem as she is down as married so her maiden name would not have been GRIGG and her husband is not with her. She is a Charwoman born Deal, Kent. There is a sibling for Louisa an Alfred GRIGG aged 12 born Deal, Kent. Does not help, but as son Alfred was 12 on the 1881 Census I looked for family on 1871 Census and they are at same address Frith, Deal, Kent. It gives us the fathers name as George who was 33 and born in Deal, Kent, wife was Sarah aged 35 a Laundress. More children on this one, listed as they appear, Mary A aged 16 a Laundress, Ellen aged 3 a scholar, Caroline 6 a scholar, James aged 4 a scholar and Alfred aged 2 all of them born in Deal, Kent. So does not solve anything, I was hoping for a Ramsgate birth at least for the father George so as to start to show some connection between the families.
