    Concerning Fanny HARLAND mother-in-law, widow age 69 Washerwoman born Sandwich, Kent. If it was a "mother-in-law" it should be Fanny HARRISON née SPICER However, it is definitely HARLAND on the census return.
    We have since learned that James's mother was Sarah SOLLY, so we have now decided that Fanny HARLAND should have been Fanny HARRISON, Florence's mother, and so mother-in-law to James. But Fanny had remarried in 1894. Where was her husband?
    1911 "Pride of the Ocean" West Side of Newhaven Harbour, Sussex.  Together with brother-in-law Walter WESLEY was with him. Another crew member a Richard LEWIS born in Kentish Town, London.

    1895 On her marriage certificate she gives her father's name as John Kingsford WELLS, the name of Lewis Kingsford WELLS' father!. (We updated this chart 0n 24th September 2013 and cannot find any record where this information came from, but it would be interesting if it is correct, but it is just not possible as she was only 2 when John Kingsford WELLS died)

    On her birth certificate the father of Florence Louise TERRY is shown as Ambrose TERRY. However, he was in America by 1871 where he had 8 children, birth years ranging from 1871 to 1888.
  3. Note. We have Minnie Roae on this chart as a child of this couple. There are a lot of family trees on Ancestry.com that show her as a child for Henry HARLAND and Louisa Jane BROOKS who married in December quarter 1894 in Thanet district. Henry was possibly a brother of James. England Select Marriages show the marriage as taking place on 26th Decmeber 1894 in Ramsgate, Kent. In 1901 the family was in Hessle, Sculcoates, Yorkshire. Henry was a Fishermans Mate he and Louisa are down as having been born in Ramsgate and they had two children Grace aged 5 born Ramsgate, Kent and Henry aged 3 born Hull, Yorkshire.  Henry appears to have died on 19th September 1917 in WWI and is commemorated at the Tower Hill Memorial, the UK Commonwealth War Graves reads HARLAND Mate Henry. Stream Trawler "Halcyon" (Grimsby). Presumed drowned 19th February 1917 Aged 43 son of the late William and Sarah Harland; husband of Louise Jane Harland, of 547 Hessle Road, Hull, born at Ramsgate. (So parents with the same names as they appear with James on the 1881 Census. If correct and Minnie is not a child of this couple we have not found the child that died on the 1911 Census.
