1841 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey. With his father Henry MERCER, down as being 47. Also a Charlotte 17 and a Leayer (daughter) aged 7. It does not appear that the other two MERCER boys who married PORTER girls were of the same family. Have now found the William and George MERCER the other two MERCER boys, they were also brothers and there mother was Ann who was a widow. 1851 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey. With his father Henry MERCER, aged 60 a Farm Labourer born Wonersh, Surrey and his brother James MERCER and his wife Drucilla MERCER née PORTER 1861 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey. They had a daughter Ruth, aged 10 months born Wonersh, Surrey. This is the third daughter who married a MERCER. 1871 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey. 1881 Census - Wonersh, Surrey 1891 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey 1901 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey IGI Baptism, father Henry, mother Charlotte. 1841 Census - Shirelock Lane, Wonersh, Surrey 1851 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey. There were two lodgers on this Census. 1861 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey. They had a daughter Ruth, aged 10 months born Wonersh, Surrey. This is the third daughter who married a MERCER. 1871 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey. 1881 Census - Wonersh, Surrey 1891 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey 1901 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey 1861 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey. This is the third daughter who married a MERCER. 1871 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey. 1881 Census - Wonersh, Surrey (Down as Ellen on this Census) 1891 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey (Down as Ellen on this Census) Reuben and Ellen are living next door to her sister Rose and her husband John RAGGETT. They have three children on this Census, Ernest R 5, Albert A 3 and Percival J 6 months all born Wonersh, Surrey 1901 Census - Wonersh, Surrey (Down as Ellen on this Census) Ancestry has the family as SEMON, Children on this Census, Ernest 15, Albert 13, Christina 8, Nellie 5 and Mabel 6 months all born Wonersh, Surrey 1903 - From a tree on Ancestry.com there is a Doris Lillian LEMON born 1903 died 1982 who married a Frederick ONGHURST. 1871 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey. 1881 Census - 49 North Street, Guildford, Surrey. Rose was a servant to a John KETTLE a Boot Manufacturer aged 65 born Guildford, Surrey and his wife Phoebe. 1891 Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey 1901 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey (Not certain this marriage is correct as father for John RAGGETT is down as Daniel not William) 1871 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey. 1881 Census - Wonersh, Surrey 1891 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey 1901 Census - Brantyngeshay Lodge, St Martha on the Hill, St Peter and St Paul, Chilworth, Hambledon, Surrey. Levi and Lillie had a son Henry aged 6 born Guildford, Surrey. Levi is down as being born in Guildford on this census, but certain correct person 1911 Census - Chilworth Guildford Surrey There was a Levi MERCER born in Hambledon district in 1898 and died in the same district in 1899 aged 0 who I would think was a child of Levi and Lillie. 1881 Census - Wonersh, Surrey 1891 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey 1901 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey 1911 Census - Sevenoaks district, Kent. I have found the family on this Census, but have not looked at the actual transcript, so no actual address, occupations or birth places,. 1881 Census - Wonersh, Surrey 1891 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey 1901 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey 1891 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey 1901 Census - Blackheath, Wonersh, Surrey CHILWORTH GUNPOWDER WORKS Henry MERCER on this Chart appears to have had an occupation at a Gunpowder Works. I have looked online and found that this was at Chilworth, Surrey. The following is information about the Chilworth Gunpowder Works: Chilworth Gunpowder Works was one of the largest, most prestigious and longest-lived powder mills in the country. Established by the East India Company in 1625, it was worked by a string private companies and became one of the most significant suppliers of gunpowder to the Government. In 1885, a consortium which included leading German powder manufacturers acquired the works to produce a new type of gunpowder known as 'brown' or 'cocoa' powder, for use in the largest guns of the day. By the end of the 1880s, and after extensive rebuilding, contemporary commentators regarded the factory as being of international standing. The most up to date machinery was imported from Germany, and to preserve the company's manufacturing secrets the new factory was managed by a former Prussian officer, Captain Otto Bouvier, and a number of German foremen. The company was also at the forefront of the development of new chemical propellants and in 1892 it erected the first commercial cordite factory in the country. It underwent further expansion during the First World War, but the massive downturn in the demand for explosives at the end of the war resulted in the closure of the factory in 1920. Subsequently many of the factory buildings were converted into dwellings, and a small community known as 'Tin Town' lived in the valley until the early 1960s.
