On 29th January 2015 a David Bryden contacted me by email regarding Cornelius MUZZELL
He wrote: Cornelius MUZZELL entered an Indenture of Assignment on November 5th 1825. This put all his assets in the hands of representatives of all his creditors. The assignees must have had to put pressure on him to pay his debts, since in March 1826 he petitioned for release from prison under the relevant act for the relief of insolvent debtors. Since the assignees were a silversmith and a watchmaker, both from London, it is most likely that the bulk of the debt was trade related. The assignees forced the sale of three properties that he owned in Brighton. He appears to have continued in business in Horsham; the freehold of the house and shop he rented in West Street was auctioned in 1836, but he will have been able to remain as tenant.
MUZZELL, Cornelius Clock and Silversmith: Horsham Indenture of Assignment 5 xi 1825 Petitioned for release as an Insolvent Debtor at Horsham Court House – see London Gazette 18227, 7 iii 1826. His assignees were James Troup, silversmith, Cheapside and James Bracebridge, watchmaker, Red Lion Street, Clerkenwell, see Sussex Advertiser 27 iii 1826. His three properties in Brighton, 11 Richmond Buildings, (annual rent £16) and 12 & 13 Laurel Place, St James’ Street, (rent £28) were auctioned by his assignees - Sussex Advertiser 3 vii 1826.
With other properties, the freehold of his rented house and shop in West Street, Horsham was auctioned - Sussex Advertiser 19 ix 1836. Baillie: Cornelius Muzzall, Clocksmith, Horsham: 1793-7.
Also on ebay on 30th January 2015 there is a clock as follows:
Longcase Clock - Cornelius Muzzell Bolney Fecit - Single Handed - Circa 1750, so this must be for a previous generation of MUZZELL's.
There is a family tree on Google for the MUZZELL family this goes back quite a long way from my chart above but as I am interested in the WALLER family I have not gone back on the MUZZELL line, however they disagree with the birth date above for Cornelius showing him being born in 1893. This is possible as we did not have a birth date for Cornelius and if we do not know we add five years on for a male from the known date of his wife. However if born in 1893 this would mean the registers for Apprentice shown above from 1791 to 1797 would not be correct as they could not belong to this Cornelius, but I do believe they are and the age at the time of marrying Mary, who we know to be correct would have been 18 and as she would have been 31 I think this is unlikely. The 1779 birth date ties in nicely with him being an apprentice in the 1790's

  4. 1841 Piggott's Directory - Horsham - Watch & Clock Makers - Muzzell Cornelius (and clock manufacturer), East St. (I think his father died in 1839 but Cornelius was down as an apprentice in 1841 so perhaps it was still in Directory in 1841.
1841 Census - High Street, St Mary the Virgin, Surrey. Living in same property as John HUMPHREY (25) Draper, William BUSHBY (30) Thatch Maker both not born in Surrey, Elizabeth BUSHBY (30) born Surrey, Martha BUSHBY (23) Ind. not born in Surrey, Esther COLLYER (20) and Emma JONES (20) Female Servants both born in Surrey, Charles FAULKNER  (40) Coachman, Charles FAULKNER (20) Vetinary Surgeon, Mary FAULKNER (40), Mary FAULKNER (23), Fanny FAULKNER (12), Jane FAULKNER (10), Eliza FAULKNER (8) and William FAULKNER (6) all born Surrey and Jane WARNER (20) Female Servant not born in Surrey

  7. 1841 Census - East Parade, North Horsham, Sussex. There was a John MUZZELL, aged 5 born Sussex at this address which ties in with John above, but with him was a Elizabeth MUZZELL Aged 65, Independent, down as being born in Sussex. So this does not tie in with Mary above, although the age is about right. There was also a Rebecca BARBER aged 25 with the family.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
