Pub Histories: The Huntsman’s Hall, Worcester Park
    Sutton Archives / September 7, 2021
In today’s post, our second covering Worcester Park, Colin looks at the Huntsman’s Hall, now renamed as The Brook, at the bottom of the high street where the railway bridge crosses the road. The pub has undergone a number of transformations in the last few years, and currently sports a modern family image with a large beer garden and menu but its origins as a nineteenth century beer house tell us something about the area during the Victorian period and beyond. Over to Colin, who once again has produced another wonderful blog, and to whom we are very grateful for his many hours of work on this series….
Suggested derivations for the name “The Huntsman’s Hall” usually refer to possible connections with the hunting fraternity. Traditionally, it refers back to a previous building on the site, at the edge of the Great Park of Nonsuch, where Henry VIII used to hunt.
More verifiably, the Worcester Park Beagles used to meet at the back of the Inn and the dogs’ kennels were at cottages across the road in Green Lane. (W. G. Grace was an enthusiastic member from 1900.) However, they were not formed until 1886 whereas the Huntsman’s Hall name was in use at least 15 years before that.
There was hare coursing in the area at that time as well – the closest pack being Charles Blake’s Morden Harriers. But as they had no known connection to the pub, I have another derivation to propose.
First let’s return to the origin of the pub which was contemporary with the railway station, opened in 1859 as “Old Malden”, but renamed “Worcester Park” in 1862. Thomas Wood owned houses at Cheam Common, as the area was known at that time, and he took the opportunity presented by the railway to open up a beer house on the site near the station, and he called it “The Railway Tavern”.
It was followed by another beer house, the “North End Tavern”, which was leased to Robert Wood (no relation) of Epsom, in 1866, and operated by James Cuff, a local bricklayer.
Thomas and his wife, Mary Ann, had three daughters by 1868, and a family move to Claygate was on the cards, so he approached Thomas Fricker of the Eagle brewery in Kingston (which used to be next door to The Ram). The lease agreed was for 21 years at £50 p.a. and the document referred to the Railway Tavern, which was how it was referred to in Thomas Wood’s electoral registration until 1882, at least.
So the name change was probably at Thomas Fricker’s initiation, and possibly inspired by his mother’s maiden name (also his own middle name) which was “Hunter”. It happened before 1871, and probably soon after 1868 when Thomas Wood moved out and Lawrence Foster from Sevenoaks became the licensee. The road was named Cheam Lane at this time.

Lawrence came to Malden with his wife Margaret and three young sons. But Margaret died shortly after the birth of their first daughter in 1868, who also died within the year. He married Susan in 1870 but that too ended tragically with her death only two years later. Lawrence remarried again, to Eliza Bridger, three years after that. Her widowed mother Amelia also became resident at the inn. Middle son, William, apprenticed with a Croydon butcher.
At the end of the 21 year lease term Lawrence retired and the family moved to Tonbridge, though Lawrence retained some local property interests. Thomas Wood meanwhile (in 1886) had sold the property to Croydon brewers, Nalder & Collyer. Around this time an extension was added to the front of the pub, which lasted until the 1960’s when it became a casualty of road-widening.
Edward Cook was the new tenant, assisted by his sister and nephew. The road name was Malden Road. Tenancies were short-lived for the next few years – Ann Stubbings, Joseph George and Ned Maynard passed through.
In 1899 a fight that started inside the pub resulted in a manslaughter charge after William Duel killed James Dawes for an offensive remark made to his wife. Dawes was already drunk and abusive and had already struck his wife and mother-in-law before going into the pub. He offered Rosina Duel a drink, which she refused. “He then took a two-shilling piece from his pocket and pressed it against her nose”. Joseph George was the landlord who threw them out once the fight started, so the fatal blow was struck outside. After his acquittal the judge commented “A man who insulted your wife in such a manner deserved all he got”.
From 1906 George Noakes managed the pub with assistance of his widowed mother Elizabeth, and sisters Clara (who died in 1917), and Emily, until 1923. Frederick and Caroline Foot ran the pub from 1924 until 1931.
By 1927 the interior included a public bar and workmen’s lunch room, to the left of the front entrance, and a private bar and hotel bar to the right. Plans were approved for an extension to the rear to add a tea room and lounge to the hotel bar.
Alfred Amos Wickens came to the Huntsmans Hall Inn in 1932, and ushered in another era of continuity. The road name by then had changed to Central Road. He and wife Eugenia were in charge until his death in 1954. Second son Reginald, who had run an off-licence in Surbiton with his wife Gladys before the war, joined his widowed mother and sister (another Gladys) at the Huntsman and became the new landlord. Speaking in 1983 Reg expressed a “hope that my son will become the third Wickens at the Huntsman’s Hall”
In 2009 Punch Taverns announced that “the in-going licensee plans to begin a six week refurbishment project to transform the pub into a stylish lounge bar.” Such a change being prompted by a slide in the pub’s reputation. A fight at the pub in June 2005 had lead to a revenge attack the next night, where petrol was thrown around and an imitation firearm brandished. The ringleader received a three-year prison sentence. A former regular said “It used to be a great place to go, but nobody had been going there for a while.” The refit gave it a much more modern and upmarket feel and was accompanied by a new name – “The Midas Touch”, though this was changed again in 2013 to “The Brook” – very different, though, to a traditional pub establishment.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
