    Letter from Mrs. Florence CARPENTER 31st May 1984 “He was a scaffold Foreman for a building contractor and responsible for the safety of the erections. No one was at work on that Christmas Eve because there was a very thick fog, but an Inspector insisted on being taken up, very much against Grandad’s better judgement. According to the Inspector’s evidence at the inquest, Grandad lost his bearings in the fog on the way down and fell off the unfinished scaffold. That was his story because he wanted to reduce the firm’s liability for inspecting in a thick fog, for compensation purposes.”

    Letter from Mrs Florence CARPENTER 31st May 1984 “Matilda had a confectionery and tobacco shop with Uncle Charlie at Earlsfield. Very capable person and very much the matriarch all her life. She brought up her mother’s family and had a sizeable family of her own and in her old age was a housekeeper to Uncle Charlie and his family. Wherever help was needed she was always there. We were all scared of her when we were children but I had a lot of compassion for her in her old age”
    Extract from letter from Mrs. Florence CARPENTER 17th May 1984 During First World War, Matilda POWELL went to work at Chipstead Golf Club. Albert POWELL was in the Army so Agnes POWELL went, with her daughter Olive to Chipstead, out of the Zeppelin raids. “Granddad went at weekends and did the donkey work, Grandma did the cooking and dishing up and Aggie waited at table and if I behaved myself I was allowed to take in the cheese course, half a small Cheddar wrapped in a serviette, and a tin of cheese biscuits, which were served to every table.......My family had a lot to thank Aggie for, she was always there in time of family crisis.”

    Information from Olive Kathleen TERRY née POWELL “Father bought bicycle and rigged up a little saddle, handle bars and footrests on the cross bar. Many trips such as picnics on Epsom Common. First car, a second-hand “Bull nosed” Morris Cowley was used for trips to the coast and Epping Forest where Matilda POWELL lived.”
