Visiting them was Mary A ELLIOTT (18) born Shamley Green, Surrey 1901 North Munslead, Godalming, Surrey. 1907 Lincoln's Hill, Chiddingfold, Surrey (address given at burial) Notes about Alice Mary JELLY/JELLEY/COOMBES I wondered why Alice's first child was down generally as George Frederick JELLEY when his mother's marriage was as Alice Mary COOMBES and it became obvious that she was indeed his mother. My sister has looked into this and as can be see above she was born Alice Mary JELLEY. It would appear that her mother Ann JELLY (née PARSONS) died in September quarter 1868 the same date that Alice Mary JELLEY was born. The baby, Alice Mary, was baptised in a private ceremony on the 29th July 1869 as JELLEY. In 1871 Census Alice Mary was living with her maternal Grandparents William and Sarah COOMBES as Alice COOMBES and is still with them as a Lodger on the 1881 Census but at that date using the name Alice Mary JELLY. Alice Mary JELLEY’s parents were George JELLEY and Ann PARSONS and they married June quarter 1865 in Guildford district, Surrey. On the 1871 Census when Ann had already died George JELLEY was a widower, a Sawyer and with him was sister Mary Ann COOMBES born Godalming, Surrey. He had a son Frederick JELLY (4) born Hambledon, Surrey. There was a Boarder a James NASH with them. So it appears that although she was a JELLEY she lived with the COOMBES family and appears to have taken their name at marriage. Alice Mary's father George was born December quarter 1840 in Guildford as George JELLY and baptised George Coombes JELLEY son of Sarah JELLEY single woman; in December 1850 Sarah JELLEY (George Coombe's JELLEY's mother) married William COOMBES in the Guildford District. In 1856 they had a daughter Mary Ann COOMBES making George Coombes JELLEY and Mary Ann COOMBES half brother and sister.
