My attention has been drawn to the following article on a BBC Web Site regarding this family of STRANGER's by Justin ALLPRESS.
    Story of the Stranger Family
    By Ben Chapple
A headstone led a local researcher to uncover the story of a Guernsey family who lost all three sons during the last year of the First World War.
Stranger Memorial at the Vale Church
After spotting a headstone in the Vale Church cemetery amateur researcher Liz Walton was intrigued.
The inscription "In proud and loving memory of the three sons of William and Ellen Stranger, Easterbrook, St Sampson, who gave their lives for Britain's cause in the Great War, and passed on to the fuller life" was the start of her research into the story of the family.
"All three of them were killed within about six weeks of each other during the First World War. It's seeing something like this that makes you realise the effect that the war must have had on families on the island, because they weren't the only family that was hit in this way," said Liz.
The family memorial at the Vale Church was not unusual Liz explained: "Quite a few families did that, I think because the graves were so far away and they couldn't travel to them and they felt they had to have somewhere, some focus over here."
William Stranger was a prosperous stone merchant and he and his wife lived in New Road, St Sampson's and had three sons Frank, Harry and George.
The records show the eldest son, Frank, joined up with the Australian Imperial Forces on 13 April 1916 in Melbourne at the age of 33 and was listed as single and his occupation as a clerk.
Liz said that was not the whole story though as he "must have served previous to that as his records show that he qualified for the Mons Star" which was awarded for action under fire between 15 August - 22 November 1914.
Frank served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 57th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
The first of the brothers to sign up was also the first to die. He survived being shot in the head, leg and arms on the 15 March 1918 at the third Battle of Ypres only to die of the wounds a week later.
He is buried in the Outtersteene Communal Cemetery Extension in Bailleul, France and along with his brothers is remembered on the Bailiwick Memorial at the top of Smith Street, the St Sampson's Memorial in the parish church and the memorial the family had built at the Vale Church.
Their names on the Bailiwick Memorial
The youngest son George was 22 when he joined the 1st Battalion of the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry as a 2nd Lieutenant on 31 October 1917.
He was killed in action at Doulieu, northern France, on 11 April 1918 and has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial in Belgium and the memorial at the Elizabeth College for old boys, which his brothers do not appear on as they had been educated at the Burlase School in Buckinghamshire.
Middle brother Harry also joined the 1st Battalion of the RGLI as a 2nd Lieutenant but almost a year earlier than his brother on 17 December 1916.
He was awarded a Military Cross and his citation states: "He held an important bridgehead during a period of strenuous fighting at close quarters. He collected and organised men of several units, and held the bridge successfully against all the enemy's efforts to break through. He set a splendid example of courage and determination."
The only one of the brothers who was married, to Beatrice Maynard from Hampshire, he was 27 and an acting Captain when he was injured in the same action as George, but he survived for a month before dying of his wounds on 11 May 1918.
Harry is buried at Les Baraques Military Cemetery, Sangatte near Calais and he is the only brother who appears on the Jersey Roll of Honour.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
