A George W WARD was born June quarter 1939 Surrey South Eastern District with a mother’s maiden name of GRAFFHAM. Originally it was thought that he was a child of George William E WARD I (born 1889) and his wife Alice Lilian GRAFFHAM. However, problems arose about this, firstly there was an eighteen year gap between the birth of the George W born 1939 and the previous child while the mother Alice Lilian would have been 47 years old at the date of his birth. And secondly, because a baptism and birth had been found in 1911 for an additional child for George William E WARD I (born 1889) and his wife Alice Lilian GRAFFHAM, one George William E GRAFFHAM later known as George William E WARD II meaning that there would have been two George William WARDs in the family. Therefore, although the mother’s maiden name was entered in the Birth Register as GRAFFHAM (the father’s mother’s name) rather there than GASSTON (mother’s maiden name) it was provisionally decided that the George W WARD born in 1939 was actually the son of George William E WARD II born 1911 and Mary Bainbridge GASSTON. A possible marriage was then found for a George W WARD to a Phyllis CLAYDON in September quarter 1962 Surrey South Eastern District, Surrey. Results of research for Phyllis CLAYDON Phyllis Irene CLAYDON née MOON, born 8 September 1903 Croydon District, Surrey (registered December quarter) married(1) September 1933 Croydon District, Surrey to William Henry CLAYDON married(2) September 1962 Surrey South Eastern District to George E WARD as Phyllis I CLAYDON died March quarter 1972 Surrey South Eastern district Surrey William Henry CLAYDON born 26th October 1901 Camberwell District, London occupation 1939 Costing Clerk Roofing died June quarter 1949 Surrey Mid Eastern district, Surrey Address for William Henry and Phyllis (transcribed as Jane, Irene on actual form) 1939 Rylands Limpsfield Road , Coulsdon and Purley U.D., Surrey, Living with Frank H SMITH and family. But as can be been from the above Phyllis CLAYDON née MOON was born in 1903 which, if she married George W WARD (born 1939) made her thirty six years older than her husband. So, was the George W WARD Phyllis married actually George William E WARD II born 1911, father of the George W WARD born 1939? George William E WARD II and Mary Bainbridge GASSTON are on a 1962 Electoral Roll entry and Family Tree details on ancestry for Mary Bainbridge GASSTON include details of the death of her husband George William E WARD II in March quarter 1988 Surrey South Eastern District, Surrey which are unlikely to have been included if the couple had parted and it was George William E WARD II who had married Phyllis CLAYDON in 1962. Subsequently another marriage has been found in the June quarter 1966 in the Fulham District, London for a George W WARD to Janet HURCOMBE (born March quarter 1945 Hammersmith District, London). It would appear that they were living at 50 Parkdale Crescent, Worcester Park, Surrey from 2002-2011 As we are therefore so uncertain as to where George W WARD born 1939 fits into this family we have just included this note in our records.
