    There are references in the Rate Books to a John WHEATON. At the present time, although it refers to a Beerhouse, it would seem that this is the only John WHEATON in Somersham at this date. Slater's 1851 Directory lists a John WHEATON in Somersham, Huntingdonshire as a Retailer of Beer. Highway Rate Book 17th July 1848 John was shown as occupying a Beer House with a Rateable Value of £8. 0s. 0d. At 6d. in the £1 the rates totalled 4/-d. Overseers Rate Book October 1848 The property is now shown as being owned by ASPINALL Church Rate Book 21st November 1850 and 15th January 1852 Rateable Value of Beer House £8. 0s. 0d. and rates 1/4d/ 1852 House called Bridge End, Rateable Value £5. 15s. 0d. rates 1/5 1/2d. later 11 1/2d. Vestry Minutes Foeffe Accounts (This was a local charity which owned land) John WHEATON is required to pay 1/2 year's rent for a cottage 6th April 1859 £3. 15s. 0d., 11th October 1859 £4. 0s. 0d. 25th March 1860 £8. 0s. 0d. for 2 1/2 years 25th March 1861 £8. 0s. 0d. for 2 1/2 years 25th March 18620 £4. 0s. 0d. for 1/2 years 11th October 1862 £4. 0s. 0d. for 1/2 years Public Meeting 7th May 1866 in Rose and Crown It was agreed to let by Auction different parts of the highway, for example "the grass on the drovers and road sides" which then had to be maintained at the expense of the hirer who was expected to "keep down the Nettles or Thisles". John WHATON acquired the Land and Short Drove for the sum of £2. 15s. 0d.
