"..had a natural heart for the stage"
From "The Firelands Pioneer" "On Tuesday morning, September 17, 1895 one of Norwalk's most esteemed citizens, died at his residence in this city, after a brief sickness of typhoid fever. He was born in Norwalk about forty years ago, where, except for a few years absence, he spent his life. He leaves an aged father, a widow and a son, two brothers and three sisters to lament his loss. The "Chronicle" said of him: "Leonard was the youngest son of the Wheaton family, and as a boy and man, was an especial favorite with all who knew him. At the last city election he was chosen a member of the City Council, receiving the largest majority of any candidate on the ticket. Upon the organization of that body he was selected as chairman of one of the most important committees. By his attention to the interests of his constituents and his prompt business methods, he assumed a leading position in the body of which he was a member. The deceased was a printer by trade, and served an apprenticeship in this office under its first proprietors, but abandoned the stick, and rule to engage in pursuits more congenial to his taste, and prior to his demise was conducting a market on Hester Street in this city. Leonard will be missed and his handsome face and pleasant greeting will no more be seen and heard on our street."

    LAID AT REST
The Funeral of the Late L A WHEATON Held From His Family Residence This Afternoon
After impressive funeral services held from his family residence No. 56 North Hester Street, at 2.30 o'clock this afternoon, the remains of the late Leonard A WHEATON were conveyed to their last resting place in Woodlawn cemetery.
The services were conducted by Rev. C S AYES, Dr T F HILDRETH and Rev. Samuel F DUNHAM, and were very largely attended by friends and relatives of the deceased, the city officials and the members of Mt. Vernon Lodge, F & A. M. Musical selections appropriate to the occasion were sung by a quartet composed of Mrs N L McLEOD, Miss Jennie GRIFFIN, W E SIDNALL and J A STRUTTON. The floral offerings were numerous and several of the designs very beautiful.
At the grace the Masonic burial service was conducted by the Masonic Lodge. The pall bearers were E J BLOXHAM, A S PRENTISS, F W VanDUSEN, G E BUTTS, A O JUMP and Ed SANBORN.

Living with them was mother-in-law Clara BUSH (63) widow born New York, USA
1910 Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA as Rose WHEATON widow. Living as sister-in-law with William F NAGEL (36) Foreman Rail Road Freight born Germany, and his wife Mae R (34) born Ohio, USA who we assume was Rose WHEATON's sister. There were also William and Mae's adopted daughters Rosalie (13) born Ohio, USA and Clara
    (6) born Illinois, USA. Also living with them was "son of sister-in-law) Don C WHEATON (20)
born Ohio, USA. Boarders were Anna DUNBAR (45) Dressmaker by the day, Howard PALMER
    (23) Stenographer and Howard CLINE (21) Clerk Rail Road Office, all three single and born
    Ohio, USA
    1920 Not found
The 1900 census shows that Rose had had two children and by 1900 only one, Daniel, was still alive, although on the 1901 she is shown having just the one child which was still living!
There are two references which could refer to Rose
    (1) married 25th July 1899 Huron Co, Ohio, USA to Joseph Thomas DOOER
    (2) died 1929, buried Section 3 East, Central Section, Row 2 No.114 & 119, Woodlawn Cemetery, Norwalk, Ohio, USA
It would appear that Joseph DOOER died sometime between 1900 and 1910 and that Rose reverted to her original married name as it would appear that she is shown as Rose WHEATON on the 1910 census if the above census information is correct. This would explain the name used for the burial in 1929.
"... a girl as pretty as was her name"
    Father - Jacob C BUSH
  3. Birth looked for on FreeBMD: Joseph Thomas (no surname entered) born September quarter 1860, but there were no names anything like DOOER.
1900 Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA
Living with them was mother-in-law Clara BUSH (63) widow born New York, USA
  4. 1900 Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA
Living with them was grandmother Clara BUSH (63) widow born New York, USA
1910 Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA as Don C WHEATON; mother Rose WHEATON
who was living as sister-in-law with William F NAGEL (36) Foreman Rail Road Freight born
Germany, and his wife Mae R (34) born Ohio, USA who we assume was Rose WHEATON's
sister. There were also William and Mae's adopted daughters Rosalie (13) born Ohio, USA
and Clara (6) born Illinois, USA. Boarders were Anna DUNBAR (45) Dressmaker by the day,
Howard PALMER (23) Stenographer and Howard CLINE (21) Clerk Rail Road Office, all
three single and born Ohio, USA
    1920 Not found
In Daniel WHEATON's Will he mentioned "Daniel, the only son of Leonard".
In Steve PYENTA's records he shows the son of Leonard as Earl with a "?"
I had assumed that this could have been a misread of the name Daniel
Then Donald ROSS shows a Donald as the son of Leonard with the additional information that he taught at Kenyon College.
    Further clarification was obviously needed.
However, we now find that the 1900 census shows Rose's son as definitely Daniel C WHEATON.
But then again on the 1910 he is shown as Don C
So we have assumed that Earl was a misread, and that Daniel and Donald are the same person.
And now on the familysearch site he is Don C

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
