1919 to 1925 Herbert Taylor Wake BOWELL appears in the British Phone Book between 1919 and 1925
The 1919 entry states he was at 2 Churston Mans. WC1 phone Holborn 4693
In 1925 he was still at 2 Churston Mans. WC1 with phone number Museum 2585
I therefore assume that for the directories for 1920 to 1924 he was a the same address
1946 Newspaper Record for a Dorothy Desiree Wake BOWELL
BARCHARD : BOWELL. - On Sept. 3. 1946 at the Church of the Holy Family. Nairobi, CAPTAIN JOHN MAXWELL BARRINGON BARCHARD. The Royal Welch Fusilliers, only son of Brigadier and Mrs. D. M. Barchard, of Penycraig, Aberporth, Wales and Kenya, to DOROTHY DESIREE WAKE, only daughter of the late H. T. W. BOWELL and Mrs. Bowell of Worthing. (14.9.1942)
1947 Dorothy BARCHARD arrived at Southampton on 7th March 1947 on the "Andes" from Bombay. she is down under "Army Families" aged 27 last place of residence Kenya and going to 34 St Mathews Road, Worthing, Sussex. It is these last two facts that make me certain that it was the daughter of Herbert Taylor Wake BOWELL. The age give as 27 would mean that she was born about 1920.
There is a birth in March quarter 1920 of a Dorothy D W BOWELL in St Giles district, London. However the mother maiden name is give as MORTON which suggests that Herbert T W BOWELL had married for a second time, BUT I cannot find a second marriage for Herbert before 1920 BUT there is a marriage for a Herbert T W BOWELL to a Maud M MORTON in March quarter 1931 in Croydon district, Surrey. Which is eleven years after the birth of their child. As I cannot find the death of his first wife perhaps he left her and was living with Maud until his first wife died and then he married her.
  2. 1881 Manor House, Everleigh, Wiltshire. Family of Dora as follows. Charles W CURTIS Head aged 57 a Gunpowder Manufacturer Merchant Farmer of 400 Acres employing 10 mean and 4 Boys and a Blacksmith born Marylebone, Middlesex. His wife Henrietta F aged 51 born Marylebone, Middlesex. Children Isabel L aged 23 and Percy F aged 21 a Farmer's son born born St George's Hanover Square, London, Then there was Dora M, Then Eveline J aged 12 and a Harold W aged 6 both Scholars and both born in Kingston on Thames, Surrey. With the was a Lily E ROBINSON a Niece aged 10 born Caen, Normandy, France.
1891 Settay Lodge, Boldre, Hampshire. Family as John Ball FOREMAN aged 27 Living on own means born Marylebone, London, his wife Dora Margaret aged 24 born Westminster, London, Children Herbert Eustace aged 1 born Boldre, Hampshire and Doris Crichton aged 2 months born Boldre, Hampshire. With them was an Angleine BOURNE a servant aged 30 a Domestic Servant born Paddington, London, a Bessie DREDGER married aged 32 a Cook born Chittern, Wiltshire, a Mary BILES single aged 28 a Parlourmaid born Alton le Pancras, Dorset and a Frederick TAYLOR aged 17 a Groom born Beckley, Oxfordshire.
1901 Kearsney Abbey River, Dover, Kent. Dora is a widow, she is with her parents Charles W CURTIS aged 77 Retired, ex Gunpowder Manufacturer born Marylebone, London,, his wife Henrietta F aged 71 Living on own means born Harley Street, London, daughter Eveline J aged 32 born Kingston on Thames, Then there is Dora, and her children Doris C aged 10 and Jeffrey R aged 8 both born Boldre, Leamington, Hampshire. There is a visitor a Mary PEACH aged 29 Living on Own Means born Northampton. and lots of servants.1904 18 Selwood Place, South Kensington, London (address at marriage) Father Charles William CURTIS, Gentleman
1911 Selley House, Brockhurst, Hampshire. This census throws up all sort of queries and problems as the London marriage certificate for Dora Margaret FORMAN née CURTIS confirms that she did indeed marry Herbert Taylor Wake BOWELL in 1904 and the people involved really do confirm this. However as shown on Chart Herbert although down as married on the 1911 Census does not have Dora with him. And then on this Census we have Dora Margaret FORMAN (not BOWELL) as a Widow, With here were two of her children Dora Chrchton aged 20 born Boldre, Hampshire and Geoffrey Reginald aged 18 born Boldre, Hampshire. all down as Private Means. with them was a Lauel Corrinaa CURTIS aged 2 a Niece born Boldre, Hampshire. There were seven servants with the family. Perhaps the marriage in 1904 was annulled for some reason.
Have now found death for Dora FORMAN she died in 1931 , so would think that as soon as this happened Herbert married Maud MORTON who had had the child Dorothy in 1920.
  4. 1891 Settay Lodge, Boldre, Hampshire. Family as John Ball FOREMAN aged 27 Living on own means born Marylebone, London, his wife Dora Margaret aged 24 born Westminster, London, Children Herbert Eustace aged 1 born Boldre, Hampshire and Doris Crichton aged 2 months born Boldre, Hampshire. 1901 St Michael School, Westgate on Sea, Kent. As a Scholar, already had this school elsewhere on the BOWELL charts, there are too many pupils, teachers and servants etc to list.
1911 Inston Lodge, 23 Grange Road, Eastbourne, Sussex. Herbert was a Visitor with a Isabel Jane HARRINGTON a Widow aged 68 Private Means born Acranshire, France, her son Herbert Henry aged 42 an Army?? born Chichester, Sussex, a Granddaughter a Kathleen Margery, aged 21 born Lancaster Gate, London. 7. 1901 Kearsney Abbey River, Doever, Kent. 8. It is these last two facts that make me certain that it was the daughter of Herbert Taylor Wake BOWELL. The age give as 27 would mean that she was born about 1920.
There were four children with the name BARCHARD and the mother's maiden name as BOWEL all I think children of this couple born between 1947 and 1952 so assume all still living.

This has turned out to be one of the most complex chart I have done. It would appear that although Dora Margaret CURTIS married Herbert Taylor BOWELL she did not then continue to live with him, she reverted to her first married name, but did not divorce her second husband and therefore he did not marry again to her death in 1931 when he then married the person he has been living with and had had a child by in 1920. This was the last BOWELL chart and I only found information for it from a marriage announcement in Kenya. Otherwise I would have had no reason to put this chart on at all.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
