    WOODEN COTTAGE BINDON LANE
Robert and Jane COBB lived in a wooden cottage in Bindon Lane between Wool and East Stoke, opposite the entrance to the lane to Wood Street. It was a self build factory constructed bungalow of a type commonly available at the time by 'mail order' from a firm in Wareham. The cottage was apparently inherited by their daughter Eliza Elizabeth. This came to like when Roger HAWKINS spoke to Mr Ronald M FORD of Baylea Farm Lodge, Highwood who said she had lived there. The cottage is on a somewhat prominent corner and he said it was commonly known and referred to by the locals as 'Liza COBBs Corner'. Alan BROWN states that some local residents of long standing still refer to it as such. The cottage still exists but has been clad with stone (2001)

    Rank: Able Seaman
    Service Number: 215722
    Campaign Medals:
    1914/15 Star
Given the information we have available, it is very possible that Richard George COBB was was awarded the 1914-15 star campaign medal of the British Empire for his service in World War One.
This Star is identical to the 1914 Star in every respect except that the centre scroll bears the dates "1914- 15" and the two small scrolls bearing "Aug" and "Nov" are omitted.
He would also have received the British War Medal and Victory Medal, as it was not awarded singularly. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred. With Pip representing either this medal or the 1914 Star, only one of which could be awarded to a soldier, Squeak represented the British War Medal and Wilfred represented the Victory Medal.
    Victory Medal
Given the information we have available it is likely that Richard George COBB was entitled to the Victory medal, also called the Inter Allied Victory Medal. This medal was awarded to all who received the 1914 Star or 1914-15 Star and, with certain exceptions, to those who received the British War Medal. It was never awarded alone. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.
Eligibility for this award consisted of having been mobilised, fighting, having served in any of the theatres of operations, or at sea, between midnight 4th/5th August, 1914, and midnight, 11th/12th November, 1918. Women who served in any of the various military organisations in a theatre of operations were also eligible.

The medal was automatically awarded in the event of death on active service before the completion of this period.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
