  1. 1841 Census - 18 King Street, Mile End Old Town Upper, Stepney, Middlesex. There is a John KNOWLES who is the correct age at this address which I think is the most likely of the 60 plus names listed with a birth between 1820 and 1824. He married in Stepney two years later, which is my reasoning. He was with his mother Elizabeth (no father) she was 47 and down as independent and born outside the county, as was John which if we take the information from the 1851 Census is correct. He was down as being 19 and a Clerk. There was also Francis 11 and Charlotte 5 both born in Middlesex.
1843 Limehouse, Father down as Jonathan KNOWLES deceased
1851 Census - Carlton Gardens, Islington, Middlesex. Definitely correct family as their eldest son Warner is with them, but occupation of Cement Labourer is not what I expected to find and the birth place of both John and Frances are different to later censuses.
1861 Census - South End, Southwold, Suffolk
1871 Census - Shingle End, Coastguard Station, Worth, Kent.
1881 Census - 19 Clarence Terrace, St Lawrence, Ramsgate, Kent. There was a Henry KNOWLES, aged 7 a grandson, aged 7 born Ramsgate, Kent and a Eliza KNOWLES, granddaughter, aged 3 born St Lawrence, Kent with the family on this Census.
1891 Census - 21 Cumberland Road, Ramsgate, Kent. It would appear that John had married again, but at present cannot find death of Frances or marriage of John to Lydia, but as John appears the correct age and is in Kent and is down as a Retired Coastguard and is down as being born in Portsmouth I feel I have the correct person. I also cannot find a death of John in the period of 1881 to 1891 and cannot find a John and Frances on the 1891 Census.
  2. 1843 Limehouse
1851 Census - Carlton Gardens, Islington, Middlesex. Definitely correct family as their eldest son Warner is with them, but occupation of Cement Labourer is not what I expected to find and the birth place of both John and Frances are different to later censuses.
1871 Census - Shingle End, Coastguard Station, Worth, Kent.
1861 Census - South End, Southwold, Suffolk
1881 Census - 19 Clarence Terrace, St Lawrence, Ramsgate, Kent. There was a Henry KNOWLES, aged 7 a grandson, aged 7 born Ramsgate, Kent and a Eliza KNOWLES, granddaughter, aged 3 born St Lawrence, Kent with the family on this Census.
  3. 1891 Census - 21 Cumberland Road, Ramsgate, Kent.
  4. 1851 Census - Carlton Gardens, Islington, Middlesex. Definitely correct family as their eldest son Warner is with them, but occupation of Cement Labourer is not what I expected to find and the birth place of both John and Frances are different to later censuses.
1861 Census - South End, Southwold, Suffolk
1881 Census - 19 Clarence Terrace, St Lawrence, Ramsgate, Kent. There was a Henry KNOWLES, aged 7 a grandson, aged 7 born Ramsgate, Kent and a Eliza KNOWLES, granddaughter, aged 3 born St Lawrence, Kent with the family on this Census.
1891 Census - 18 Sussex Street, Ramsgate, Kent. The child Eliza (a Scholar) is down as his daughter on this Census, see notes 6 and 8. There are also the following children in addition, Mabel I aged 8 a Scholar, born St Lawrence, Kent, Francis J 7 a Scholar, born Ramsgate, Kent, Ethel C 5 a Scholar born Ramsgate, Kent, Harriett A 4 born Maidstone, Kent, Warner J 3 born Ramsgate, Kent and Dorothy 6 months born Ramsgate, Kent.
BMD shows two marriages for Warner, I would think therefore that the two grandchildren shown on the 1881 Census are his from his first marriage, (at present I do not know which of the females on the BMD he married). He then married Isabel as she appears on the 1891 Census
IGI information for actual marriage date of Warner KNOWLES and Isabel NORRIS, record submitted by member of LDS church and not an actual record.
  5. 1861 Census - South End, Southwold, Suffolk
BMD has a Jonathan Francis whereas on the 1861 it is Francis.
  6. 1861 Census - South End, Southwold, Suffolk
1871 Census - 19 Gale Street, West, St Giles in the Fields, St Giles South, London. Down as a Friend at this address.
    1878 St Lawrence, Ramsgate, Kent
  7. 1861 Census - South End, Southwold, Suffolk
1871 Census - Bell Hotel, Strand Street, St Clement, Sandwich, Kent. George, aged 16 was a servant at this Hotel.
  8. 1861 Census - South End, Southwold, Suffolk
Jessie Alice possibly has another name after the Alice as the BMD shows a _ after the name Alice.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
