1892 271 East Street, Southwark, London. (admission of Florence Mary LIVING to Flint School, Southwark, London

  2. 1871 Queens? Buildings, St Albans, Hertfordshire. (Everyone born St Albans) Emma was 5. Father Frederick aged 26 a Labourer, wife Ann aged 29 a Brigell? Hat Maker, Eliza 12 occupation same as mother, Frederick 3 and then a son William aged 15. If Frederick was father of William it would mean that Frederick was only 11 when he fathered him, so I would think his wife might have been married before but even then she would have only been 14 when she had him.

1911 36 Longmire Road, St Albans, Hertfordshire (as Emma). Down as Mrs Emma LIVING aged 43 and married 20 years and having had six children, three living and three of whom died she is down as a Brush Drawer, but also a Housekeeper to a Frederick DORLING a Widower a Shoemaker's Pressman. He is down as having been married 19 years and having had ten children eight of whom are living and two of whom have died. Six of his children are with him, all down as having been born in St Alban's. They are Emma DORLING aged 16 Single a Machinist, Robert DORLING aged 12 a Newsboy, Florence DORLING aged 11 School, Thomas DORLING aged 10, Edward DORLIING aged 8 and Grace DORLING aged 5. (We only have five children, two of whom had died by the 1911 Census so if what Emma/Emily says on the 1911 is correct we are missing a living child on the chart above
1914 36 Longmire Road St Albans, Hertfordshire

1911 Census - Not found at present
1914 35 Barnsbury Road, Copenhagen Street, Islington, London
I have taken it that Florence married a SMITH as that is the name she gives as an informant on her mother's death. At present I cannot find a marriage that fits, and I cannot find on the 1911 Census. It is possible she was married by 1911 as she would have been 21, I have found the following children with the father as SMITH and the mother's maiden name as LIVING. All possible, it looks as though they started in Islington and I will search again on the 1911 Census (only two Florence SMITH's come up born in the correct year in Newington and both of these show as being in an Institution so not happy these are the correct people) and then moved to West Ham with Lilian and William possibly being twins. Florence address was in Islington in 1914 on the death of her mother.
Charles H W Smith 1911 Oct-Nov-Dec Islington Greater London, London, Middlesex
Robert C H Smith 1916 Jan-Feb-Mar Islington Greater London, London, Middlesex
I do not think that the following children was indeed children of this couple as it appears that Henry died around 1917
Phoebe E Smith 1917 Jan-Feb-Mar West Ham Essex, Greater London
Lilian S Smith 1919 Oct-Nov-Dec West Ham Essex, Greater London
William J Smith 1919 Oct-Nov-Dec West Ham Essex, Greater London
Ellen L Smith 1921 Jul-Aug-Sep West Ham Essex, Greater London
Taking another tack, and the fact the first son is a Charles and therefore it is possible his father is there are again two Charles SMITHs living in Islington with a wife called Florence who was born in 1888. Both of these are Households not institutions so possible one of these is correct but have not looked at them. I think where there is doubt it is worth waiting to be able to search through when finally Ancestry.com gets them online.
I have then found a Ancestry.com tree that shows the husband of Florence as Henry John with a second marriage to a William Prestage Charles CARTWRIGHT in 1921. This again is only a possibility as they do not have the complete family on for Albert (only two children) and they only shown one child for Henry and Florence the Robert C H SMITH in 1916.
We believe that Henry John Smith died about 1917 so I would think only Charles H W SMITH and Robert C H SMITH were children of this Couple, as it does appear that Florence as Florence M SMITH married William P C CARTWRIGHT in March quarter 1921 in Islington, Middlesex, which makes a move to West Ham, Essex unlikely. It also appears that this was not the first marriage of William Prestage Charles Cartwright as he appears to have had a previous marriage on 30th April 1916 at St Andrew, Barnsbury, Islington to a Frances Maria JOHNSON. She possibly died in March quarter 1920 in Pancras district, London aged 27. On the 1916 marriage certificate Frances is down as being a Spinster aged 23 of 22 Lyon street, Islington with father as John JOHNSON (Deceased) a Labourer, William Prestage Charles CARTWRIGHT was also 23 a Bachelor a Labourer of 40 Clayton street, Islington with father as William Prestage Charles CARTWRIGHT a Labourer. The witnesses at their marriage were William DEERTAGE?, Charles CARTWRIGHT and Grace Ellen CARTWRIGHT.
From the family tree on Ancestry it appears that William CARTWRIGHT and Florence SMITH née LIVING had several children.
These three children are listed in Islington with CARTWRIGHT as the surname and LIVING as the mothers maiden name.
    Stanley D Cartwright Jan-Feb-Mar 1929 Islington London
    David J Cartwright Oct-Nov-Dec 1930 Islington London
    Donald L Cartwright Oct-Nov-Dec 1930 Islington London
The family tree show seven children, some of which are living so no details given.

1898  3 Gore Road, South Hackney
1901 Census - 103a  Lawrence Avenue, East Ham, Essex
1911 Blanch, Harwich, Tendring, Essex. (having now found him as a Stoker on this census, I think the following information is for our Charles
There is a death of a Charles Horace LIVING in WWI (21st August 1915) with birth in Walworth, London but birth date given as 26th April 1891, He was on HMS Pembroke, and died from disease, buried in Glebe Cemetery, Stranraer, Wigtownshire, he was an Acting Leading Stoker. The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
