1861 Census -  1861 Street, Warboys, Huntingdonshire (Julia CAMPBELL 25/10/2000). No Richard at home on night of census and Mahala shown as head of house. Sarah DRING, widow, mother of Mahala was living with the family.
1871 Census - Dead Lane, Warboys, Huntingdonshire
    1881 High Street, Warboys, Huntingdonshire
Other details that we have about Richard and his convictions are as follows:
    Information from Julia CAMPBELL
Joan COLE of Warboys, Huntingdonshire gave Julia a cutting which reported the death of David MARSHALL. In this reference was made to the transportation of his father, Richard, for sheep stealing. Julia therefore looked into this comment and the following are her findings as at 23/9/2001:
    Convictions in 1833, 1839, 1854 and 1872
1833 - transportation for life for sheep stealing which must have been altered because in February 1839 he married Mahala
1839 December - convicted for stealing Turf. His sentence was one year at a correction centre and two private whippings. Apparently when asked why he did it he said he had nothing in the house to burn.
"When Richard MARSHALL stole some turf on Saturday 14th December 1839 because as he said "I had not a Turf in the house, I had nothing to burn and was forced to get some from somewhere" it was probably to keep his wife and two month old son George warm. John HARBOUR who was also convicted with Richard for stealing the Turf said he was Richard's lodger".
1854 - convicted of stealing sheep and his sentence was eight years penal servititude. (Joan COLE's great, great grandfather, George MANN, a vet, was one of the expert witnesses in the case).
1872 - convicted for aggravated assault upon a girl. Entry in goal book but further details to be obtained.
Further information from Julia CAMPBELL 25/10/2001:
The instigator was Robert PAPWORTH (Patrick ASHLEY'S ancestor) who was twice Richard's age. Richard's statement goes like this if I am deciphering it correctly.
    "Warboys December, 17th 1833.
Examination of Richard MARSHALL who saith that about three or four o'clock yesterday afternoon he taken some fire out of Mr. LONGLANDS Brick Kiln taken it into the Wood there made a fire with some sticks that on Thursday afternoon last the 13th instant. Robert PAPWORTH and George LAWRENCE came to John THOMPSON'S ground where deponant was attending birds. PAPWORTH and LAWRENCE said to deponant let us kill one of them sheep (they were looking towards Mr. HOLMES' fenside close) deponant went to a stile that leads into the last mentioned ground to see if any one were coming untill PAPWORTH and LAWRENCE caught a sheep and taken it into a spinney next the Ground when deponant went to them helped to hold the sheep lent PAPWORTH his knife untill PAPWORTH killed it then helped to skin and cut the sheep in pieces leaving the carcass against a root in or near the spinney. The next morning before daylight deponant PAPWORTH and LAWRENCE went to the place where they had deposited the Mutton taken the mutton away cooked and eat part in John THOMPSON'S Ground and hid the remainder in John THOMPSON'S Ground afterwards hid some in Mr DRING'S Grounds and some in Mr. UPCHURCH'S Ground near deponant takes oath that a shoulder of mutton now produced before him is part of the sheep before mentioned knows that the shoulder of mutton now produced was hid near a drain in Mr UPCHURCH'S Ground where it was found concealed under the before named George LAWRENCE. deponants aith that himself PAPWORTH and LAWRENCE cooked and eat part of the aforesaid Muttonin Mr. LONGLAND'S Wood yesterday afternoon viz. Monday Dec. 16th."(spelling as is)
I can't read the witnesses name but it has Witness my hand Richard his X mark MARSHALL. Six years later when he gets married he signs the Parish Register. I wonder whether wherever he was sent for punishment someone taught him to write? The mystery is still not solved. According to the Assize notes sentence was transportation for life, but he was getting married in Warboys six years later, so what happened? Richard's son David's obituary says sent abroad, if he was it was not for 14 years. Both this 1833 and the 1839 offence were mentioned on the 1854 Assize notes so presumably he must have served whatever sentence transportation for life was commuted to.
    What we found about the 1872 offence was interesting for aggravated assault on a girl. We found an entry in the General Register of Prisoners as follows;
Sentenced by P.P. COOPER, Capt. STEPHENS and E. FELLOWS.....Richard MARSHALL of Warboys Labourer aged 54.... Height 5ft. 6ins.... fresh complexion......dark brown hair... Grey eyes. Started sentence 9th October, offence aggravated assault upon a girl.... sentence 6 cal. months hard labour discharged 8th April, 1873 behavior good. The HCRO did not seem to have a Register of Prisoners that covered the dates of the other times he was sentenced which was a pity, but we will keep on digging.

    Sixty-Seven YEARS on one Farm
    Oldhurst G O M Laid to Rest
Born at Warboys in 1851, commenced work ten years later at Porch Farm, Oldhust, Hunts., worked on this farm until a fortnight ago, and then, the Great Silence - such is the "simple annal" of David MARSHALL, who was laid to rest in God's Acre at Oldhurst on Wednesday afternoon. David, who was beloved by all the children of the village (for his pockets always had a supply of "goodies") was a bachelor, and lived alone. His first employer was the late Mrs. E J MACER, of Porch Farm, and he remained when Mr A CHEW took over the farm. For several years he lived at the farm. Since the war he twice won the prize at the Hunts. Agricultural Show for the longest service with one employer. David's memory was very good, and he would quaintly tell how his father, in early life, was transported abroad for sheep stealing, was abroad for 14 years, and came back to work on the land in Huntingdonshire.
The funeral took place on Wednesday. The chief mourners were: Mrs Charles MARSHALL (sister-in-law), Mr F MARSHALL (nephew), and Miss MARSHALL (niece), Ramsey; the Missess MARSHALL, Mrs ROSE, Mrs. WHITSEY and Mrs UPCHURCH (nieces), Warboys; Mr and Mrs A CHEW, Miss L CHEW, Mr A W and Mr H P CHEW. Amongst others present were: Mrs E CROSS, Mrs LANDER, Miss HODSON, Mrs ASHLEY, Mrs MOULDS (Oldhurst), Mrs KIMPTON (Woodhurst), Mr J W ALLPRESS (Broughton), Mr and Mrs ADAMS (Pidley), Mr John HUTCHCRAFT (Hungary Hill), Messrs H HUTCHCRAFT, C COOPER, A NEWMAN, F BOZEAT, P L YOUNG, D HUGGINS and W BESTER.
The coffin, of polished elm with black fittings, was bourne to the graveside on a farm wagon, drawn by deceased's favourite horse at Porsh Farm, and he was laid to rest near his old mistress, Mrs MACER.
The floral tokens were inscribed: From Lizzie and Annie; In loving remembrance of David, from Mr and Mrs LANDER and Family: To dear David, from Sarah Ann MARSHALL and family, Ramsey; With the esteem of all connected with Porch Farm, Oldhurst; In loving memory of David, from Mrs C COLBERT and Ethel; In loving memory of David from Mr and Mrs WOOLAR; In remembrance from his Fellow Workmen.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. J W ALLPRESS (Broughton)
    "DUTY WELL DONE"
  9. 1871 Census - Dead Lane, Warboys, Huntingdonshire
    1881 High Street, Warboys, Huntingdonshire
    1891 High Street, Warboys, Huntingdonshire
1901 The Lodge House, Church Street, Warboys, Huntingdonshire
1911 31 King Street, Kettering, Northamptonshire as a widow. On the 1911 census Lizzie is shown as having had 4 children all still living
A Mrs FAIREY was at the funeral of her sister, Rebecca HYDE.  In 1891 Charles Henry FAIREY was lodging with Mahala MARSHALL and her daughter Lizzie as well as Arthur MARSHALL, Lizzie's son. For the time being it is being assumed that Charles married Lizzie.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
