    An unsuccessful search has been made in all the parishes surrounding Reigate for the birth of Thomas POWELL A search has also been made for POWELL Wills with no results. In the case of Hannah BOURCHALL it is possible that the baptism of her mother has been found but more research needs to be undertaken before this information is confirmed.
    It was found that part of Buckland parish was detached, and this area was situated near Sidlow Bridge which is half way between Reigate and Horley. This goes some way to explain how Thomas (who was baptised in Reigate) and Hannah (who was baptised in Horley) met. The information about Buckland parish was obtained from a local history book about Buckland and the author was contacted to see if he had any information about large properties where Hannah could have worked. The estate had been bought in 1794 and ownership had passed through one family until nearly the present day. However, details of the staff employed was not amongst the archives.

    COINCIDENCES!
    Jean and Dennis WHEATON moved to Horley, Surrey in 1961. In one of the photograph albums of our mother, Olive Kathleen TERRY (née POWELL) there is a picture of Olive POWELL’s family on bicycles. The snap-shot includes, in the background, a sign post pointing to Horley. Over the years our grandmother, (Agnes Olive POWELL née COBB) had talked of relations in Horley but we believed them to be those related to her mother’s WALLER family from nearby Newdigate, Rudgewick and Cranleigh. The POWELL family came from London, we KNEW that!
    After Olive TERRY’s death in 1983 we began our Family History research, but it was not until 1992 that we found that our POWELL ancestors had lived in Reigate, and that Hannah BURCHALL, our great-great-great grandmother, was christened in the Church of St Bartholomew, the same church where, some two hundred years later, we had the christening of our daughter, Lynne Kathryn WHEATON.

    Charlotte MITCHELL (65) widow Pauper formerly Charwoman born Shipley, Sussex
    1861 Redhill, Reigate Foreign, Reigate, Surrey as GEAR and as a widow. Living with her was James GEAR (12) Grandson Scholar born Reigate, Surrey and a Boarder was Charlotte MITCHELL (76) widow born Shipley, Sussex
    1871 11 Carters Row, Reigate Foreign, Reigate, Surrey as GEAR and as a widow. Living with her was James GEAR (22) Grandson Unmarried Carpenter born Reigate, Surrey (Next door was a STEMP family, and next-door-but-one was Sarah's brother Isaac)

    1851 Pokes Alley, Wimbledon, Surrey could be W(idower), or maybe U(nmarried) born Reigate. Together with Emily (14) daughter, and Louisa PRINCE (53) Married, Domestic Servant born Putney, Surrey (she later because William's wife). No trace of William or Louisa has been found on the 1851
    1861 Dog and Fox Alley, Wimbledon, Surrey born Reigate, Surrey. William has now married Louisa PRINCE who is shown as his wife on this census
    Also living with them was son William (21) Unmarried General Labourer born Putney, Surrey. So, where was he in 1851? Louisa appears to have been a servant in Putney, Surrey, but no Emily.
    1871 Beehive Buildings, Wimbledon, Surrey as a widower born Reigate Surrey. Lodging with William NOAD (33) Waiter born St James, Bath, Somerset, his wife  Catherine (33) born St Lukes, London, daughters Lizey (9) Scholar born St Lukes, London, Lidia (5) Scholar and Sarah L (1) both born Wimbledon, Surrey, together with Mary SWEENEY wife's mother (60) widow Charwoman born Co. Limerick, Ireland. Living with him was his daughter Louisa (38) formerly a servant born Wimbledon, Surrey. Still no sign of Emily, and William missing as well.
    Marriage Notes for William POWELL and Mary POWELL: On Family search no marriages were found in Reigate or Wimbledon.
    The only ones that were possible fits were: William POWELL and Mary Ann SMITH 19 May 1828 St Mary, Newington, Surrey and William POWELL and Mary Ann SICKER 8 December 1830 St George the Martyr, Southwark, Surrey. Sight of the actual Parish Register might give the name of William's father. Otherwise there are no clues as to whether one of these is what we need. More research required
    IMPORTANT NOTE
    Although information has been included for William POWELL born about 1800 and his descendants, other than that he is shown on various census returns as being born in Reigate, Surrey, we have no other information to show that the details we have collected (other than the baptism details) actually belong to this William. However, until we find out otherwise we have entered the information here so that we do not lose it. BUT, beware, it might all be attached to the wrong man.

    We are not sure whether John married either Ruth PEAT or Eliza ONGLEY. He cannot have married both, one on 1823 and the other in 1824, because Ruth PEAT’s children’s births are from 1821-1833 and Eliza ONGLEY’s chldren’s births are from 1825-1835. We are not sure if we will ever find a solution to this problem so information about both families have been included showing the two possibilities.
    If this John POWELL married IRuth PEAT he died before 1841, probably before September 1837
    If this John POWELL married Eliza ONGLEY he was alive for the 1841 census but has not been found on the 1851 census and no death between 1841 and1851 in the Reigate District, Surrey has been found. The only probable John POWELL death in the Reigate District, Surrey was in the March quarter of 1865. So where was the John who died then in 1851 and 1861?
