  1. 1861 Census - Address - Shepherd Street, Northfleet, Kent
  2. 1871 Census, children after 1866 named Bradford so assume Louisa married again but if so her husband was not at home on the night of the 1871 census. She gave her name on the 1871 census as Louisa BRADFORD but gave her first three children as STEDMAN
  3. 1871 Census - Address - Barrack Field, Northfleet, Kent
  4. St Botolph, Northfleet, Kent Parish Records and also the IGI. Both show the parent of Louisa as William and Ann. William was a Labourer. The family appears on the 1851 Census with Louisa not being with the family, but with another 6 children. I have found one of the Baptism, William who was baptised on 11th December 1836 with parents William and Ann and this ties up with the age of William on the 1851 Census. I will therefore put a chart on for this family.
  5. 1851 Census - The Avenue, Northfleet, Kent
  6. Both age and place of birth difficult to read. It does look as though Ann was a lot younger than William he is definitely 64 and she is 4?.
  7. The baptisms on this Chart are taken from St Botolph, Northfleet, Kent parish records and are not taken from the IGI. The only baptism that appears on the IGI is the one for Louisa which agrees with the parish records.
  8. 1861 Census - South Side of Northfleet Hill, Kent. This Census shows clearly that An was 23 years younger than her husband and she was born in Wrotham, Kent. They had a servant, a Louisa FRAN? (FARR), aged 15, born Northfleet, Essex
  9. What were Greenwich Pensioners?
Seamen contributed sixpence a month from their pay towards the upkeep of the hospital. Pensioners were admitted from 1705 and originally wore a uniform of dark gray with a blue lining and brass buttons. The colour of the uniforms changed to brown and then blue. Families of pensioners were not allowed to live with them in the Hospital so many lived in the Greenwich area.  By the 19th century it was found preferable to pay out pensions and in 1869 the Hospital closed. Records of Greenwich Pensioners are held at The National Archives, Ruskin Avenue, Kew, Richmond, Surrey.
  10. 1861 Census - Northfleet Hill, Northfleet, Kent
  11. 1861 Census - Clifton Cottage, Northfleet, Kent. Eliza was a servant to a Elizabeth STAFFORD, aged 73 a Stationer, born Kensington, Middlesex
  12. 1871 Census - Barrack Field, Northfleet, Kent
  13. 1871 Census - Royal Horse Infirmary and Military Camp Huts and Remount Establishment
  14. 1901 Census - 16 Prospect Terrace, Swanscombe, Kent
  15. 1901 Census - Laurel Cottage, Eglington Road, Swanscombe, Kent
  16. On the BMD this is the only likely marriage that comes up. I think is will be correct as James was in the Army and Aldershot Barracks would have come in this district.
  17. 1891 Census - Laurel Cottage, Eglington Road, Swanscombe, Kent
  18. 1891 Census - 29 Blomfield Road (could this be Broomfield Road as on the 1881 Census on which it is very clear), Swanscombe, Kent
  19. 1881 Census - 11 Broomfield Road, Swanscombe, Kent
  20. There is a marriage on the IGI. I discounted it to start with as I was looking for a marriage in the Northfleet area. However Ann the wife of William was born in Wrotham Kent and the marriage is in Plaxtol, Kent. Looking on Google maps Plaxtol is near Wrotham so I now think it is the correct marriage. It is in 1829 which would tie up with the birth of Mary their first daughter, who is also down on some Censuses as being born in Wrotham.

On Ancestry.com they do not appear to be able to index the name SKEWS correctly, in nearly every case it appears as something different, however on the actual census returns it actually appears as SKEWS. It just means that you cannot just search on the name SKEWS, but on the christian name and age and place of birth and then look for something that matches the family.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
