    FAMOUS ORCHESTRA AT SAWTELL
News of the visit of Stedman's Orchestra to Finch's Hall, Sawtell, will be received with gratification by any who have heard these famous people. He has played at many of the leading theatres in Sydney, and during the war was with the Coo-ees Concert Party in London and Paris. He is the eldest son of Mr. Archibald Beattie, one of the pioneers of the North Coast of N.S.W. The well-known conductor. Mr. Sydney Stedman is a son-in-law of Mr. Beattie; his wife was Miss Vera Beattie. Mr. Stedman has conducted orchestras all over the world. Alex. Miller and L. McCorkell, saxaphonists, are too well-known to need any introduction form us. The concert portion of the party will comprise Mrs. J. Darlsen (contralto) and a very well-known personality inn the southern cities in Mr. Hector O'Brien. Mr O'Brien has understudied Barnsley Williams and as an entertainer is absolutely unsurpassed. he is also a famous orator. Nothing Saved
    EARLY MORNING FIRE
A weather-board dwelling at the corner of Percy and Canning street, occupied by Mr. Sydney Stedman was practically destroyed by a fire which broke out early yesterday morning. Mr.. Stedman, who, with his wife and three children, was sleeping on the verandah, was awakened by a noise in the the house, and on investigating found the house full of smoke. About the same times flames issuing from under the eaves of the roof were noticed by Mr. E. Harrison, who lives opposite, and he immediately gave the alarm. The fire soon obtained a firm hold, and, by the time the brigade arrived, the whole house was in flames. Nothing was saved. All the occupants escaped, two boys sleeping in an inside room, having to jump through a window.
The house, which was owned by Messrs. J. I. and F. R. Lomas, was insured with the Southern Union General Insurance company for £350. The contents were insured with the New Zealand Insurance Company for £250.
Mr. Stedman stated yesterday that he estimated his loss at between £400 and £500, a valuable collection of musical works and books alone being valued by him at £150. A storage shed and a garage at the rear of the house were undamaged.

    1953 Newspaper Report
Tuesday 13th June 1953 - Warwick Daily News
The death occurred in Sydney on December 27 of Mr. Sidney Stedman, former well known Warwick music teacher, who carried on his profession here for a number of years before his departure for the south. The late Mr. Stedman will be remembers as theatre painist in the old days of open air pictures and before the advent of the talkies. While in Warwick he also taught music at The Scots College, and was for a time organist at St. Mark's Church of England. He is survived by his widow, formerly Miss Vera Anne Beattiee, and three sons - Sindey, Max and Joh, all of Sydney. One son. Haden, and a daughter predeceased him.
    Notes about Sydney STEDMAN
Death details for Sydney taken from NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, it shows the name of Sydney's father as Henry John so I think it is correct.
On a letter from Elizabeth Maud STEDMAN to her daughter Maude, Maxwell STEDMAN in Australia is mentioned, believe he was a son of Sydney. The address given was 775 Dowling Street Redfern New South Wales Australia
On the 1963 Australian Electoral Roll I have found the following at Flat 1 Dowling Street Redfern New South Wales, Australia
STEDMAN August John. Flat 1 775 Dowling street, Draughtsman M
STEDMAN Irene Jean 775 Dowling street, home duties F
STEDMAN Mary Elizabeth 775 Dowling street, home duties, F
STEDMAN Maxwell 775 Dowling street, sales representative M
STEDMAN Sydney Eric 775 Dowling street, manager M
I think because the address being the same at that found in my mother-in-laws belongings that this must be the same family. At present I do not know where the various members fit in. Is one of them the wife of Maxwell and the other children of him, or is Mary Elizabeth actually his mother and is the "Lizzie" that I have shown above as the wife of Sydney MAXWELL.
From this the NSW marriage details show that a Maxwell Sebastian STEDMAN married an Irene Jean STEDMAN in 1952 in Five Dock district, New South Wales, her maiden name was HALL. (This still leaves Mary Elizabeth STEDMAN as possible mother of Maxwell)

    LETTERS IN HIS BAG
When Mrs Doreen Stedman, of Surat, found letters from other women in her husband's kit--bag, she spoke to him about them, but his only response was to tell her that she could do what she liked about it, and if she wanted a divorce, he would give her all the evidence she required.
Such was the story told by Mrs. Stedman, in Brisbane Supreme Court on Mondayy, when she petitioned for divorce from Sydney Eric Stedman on the grounds of his desertion.
A MARRIAGE certificate copy tendered by Mrs. Stedman showed that she was a Miss Butler when she married Stedman a road contractor in 1940. The certificate showed that Stedman's father was Sydney Stedman, Professor of Music.
Her husband, she said had come from New South Wales and after being in Queensland for a short while after the marriage, he had gone to Singleton to live. His people had obtained a job for him in a munition works in Newcastle. She followed him to N.S.W. but he told her to go back and she returned to Surat, said Mrs. Stedman.
Stedman joined the Air force in 1942, and visited her on leave the following year, she said. She found letters in his kitbag, and he told her she could do what she liked about it, as stated above. He left her, and she had not seen him since, she said.
Mr. Justice Philip: It looks as though your husband wouldn't care what happened to you?
    Witness: I'm sure he wouldn't
Mrs. Stedman said she had misconducted herself with a man named Ward, and since then had been living with Ward as his wife.
His Honor made an order for divorce.

    For Lapse
    SYDNEY, Wednesday. -
A 33-year-old man had stolen £42 because he had lost "quite a bit of money" on poker machines, Burwood Court was told today.
The man, Maxwell Sebastion Stedman, 33, of Roberts Street, Ashfield, pleaded guilty to having stolen £42 from his employers.
Mr. Sargenson, S.M., placed Stedman on a £50 good behaviour bond and ordered him to pay £42 compensation to his employers.
Mr. Sargenson told Stedman, that nobody with "a grain of common sense would play poker machines".
"Some even return 100 per cent. profit." he said.
    "I've seen them."

    Note
Only put this chart on on 29th August 2024. We have never been able to be certain of this family although my mother in law Maud Elizabeth POLTON née THOROGOOD had a diary which we found on her death with the address of a Maxwell STEDMAN at 775 Dowling Street, Redfern, Australia and we were aware that a son Sydney had emigrated to Australia. Now only the 2nd September 2024 and you can see the large amount of information that has been found, mainly by my niece. A Website by somebody else had the main person Sydney STEDMAN down as Sydney Vincent Waterloo STEDMAN, we can find nothing that substantiates the names Vincent Waterloo, at present have put them in ( - )

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
