    NORTHFLEET
SHOCKING ACCIDENT. - On Tuesday, Mr W. J. Harris coroner for the Sittingbourne district of Kent, held an inquest at the Dove Inn, Northfleet, touching the death of Aubrey Percival Gard, aged four years and three months, the son of Mr Arthur Gard, a clothier in business at No. 10, The Hill, Northfleet, which was caused by a tank falling upon him. It appeared from the evidence that the tank was built by a bricklayer named Henry John Stedman on Saturday, may 22nd. It was constructed of bricks and cement, and was 5ft. 10in high and about 2ft. 9in. bu 13in in the clear inside. On the following Wednesday between three and four feet of water were put into the tank; and the next day it burst, and the debris fell upon the deceased and another child, who were playing near, deceased died in 61 hours having been unconscious from the time of the accident.  A question as to the construction of the tank of course arose; and Stedman admitted that he used no iron ties or mainstay to support the structure. It was built from the ground in a corner adjoining the wash-house with a wall at the back and one side. He was not aware what the pressure of water was per foot. Stedman also denied that he gave Mr Gard permission to used the tank; but the latter and his servant stated emphatically that he died. The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death,2 and added: - We are of opinion that the deceased met her death through the negligent manner in which the tank was constructed by Henry John Stedman, and that Stedman was incompetent to have undertaken such construction."

A list of births of the family of Henry John STEDMAN found by Gladys WOOD née THOROGOOD at the beginning of 1998 indicates that the full name of Elizabeth BARRY was Mary Ann Elizabeth BARRY, this is the first indication that she had any other names. This might make it possible to find her marriage and birth certificates. It also gave us a complete list of birth dates for all the children, making it even more unlikely that the name of Fanny which appears in the 1891 census was correct. I have now found her marriage certificate which uses the name Elizabeth. I have therefore put Elizabeth back as the first name and followed them with the two other in parenthesis.
Elizabeth lived with her youngest son and his family at 31 Terrace Street, Gravesend, Kent for the last years of her life until just before her death when she went into a home, I assume in the Chatham disrict where her death was registered. .

FATAL FALL FROM A WINDOW. -
An inquest was held on the body of Charles Stedman by the county coroner, Mr. Harris, on Tuesday afternoon, at the Railway Tavern, Northfleet. The deceased had been ill for a considerable time. On the 8th inst. he was left alone in his bedroom for a short time, and was subsequently found on the pavement underneath his window. He was picked up insensible and did not again rally. Mr. J. Shotton was chosen foreman of the jury. - Mrs Stedman, 110, High-street, Northfleet, said the deceased was her son, and had been suffering from consumption for the past eight years. Witness was in the deceased's bedroom at half-past seven, and he was then in his bed. The deceased was light-headed at times. About half an hour afterwards witness heard a dreadful thud as if something had fallen or was knocked off a window-sill. Witness did not take any more notice of it at the time, but on going into the yard soon afterwards she found deceased lying on the cement pavement. - By the Coroner: He must have fallen out of the window, which was open enough for him to crawl through. Witness screamed and called her neighbour, Mrs. Lodge, and with her help deceased was again put to bed. Witness immediately sent for Dr. Flood. Deceased did not recover consciousness. - Dr. Flood, The Hill, Northfleet, stated that he was sent for on Tuesday, the 8th inst., about nine o'clock and found the deceased lying on the couch. He had a bruise on the temple, and had every appearance of concussion of the brain. He died on Saturday last. In his (the doctor's) opinion the deceased, who was suffering from phthisis, was seized with a craving for air, and over-balanced himself, and fell out of the window. - This was all the evidence brought forward, and the jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death."

So he was registered as REDMOND, he appears in lots of places as REDMAN.

    FAMOUS ORCHESTRA AT SAWTELL
News of the visit of Stedman's Orchestra to Finch's Hall, Sawtell, will be received with gratification by any who have heard these famous people. It may also be very interesting to the people of the North Coast to know that the leading violinist. Eric Beattie was born at Thora (Bellinger River). He has played at many of the leading theatres in Sydney, and during the war was with the Coo-ees Concert Party in London and Paris. He is the eldest son of Mr. Archibald Beattie, one of the pioneers of the North Coast of N.S.W. The well-known conductor. My. Sydney Stedman is a son-in-law of Mr. Beattie; his wife was Miss Vera Beattie. Mr. Stedman has conducted orchestras all over the world. Alex. Miller and L. McCorkell, saxaphonists, are too well-known to need any introduction form us. The concert portion of the party will comprise Mrs. J. Darlsen (contralto) and a very well-known personality inn the southern cities in Mr. Hector O'Brien. Mr O'Brien has understudied Barnsley Williams and as an entertainer is absolutely unsurpassed. he is also a famous orator. This party of famous people with run dances and concerts at Sawtell from December 19th to the end of January. The very latest music will be played.

    Nothing Saved
    EARLY MORNIING FIRE
A weather-board dwelling at the corner of Percy and Canning street, occupied by Mr. Sydney Stedman was practically destroyed by a fire which broke out early yesterday morning. Mr.. Stedman, who, with his wife and three children, was sleeping on the verandah, was awakened by a noise in the the house, and on investigating found the house full of smoke. About the same times flames issuing from under the eaves of the roof were noticed by Mr. E. Harrison, who lives opposite, and he immediately gave the alarm. The fire soon obtained a firm hold, and, by the time the brigade arrived, the whole house was in flames. Nothing was saved. All the occupants escaped, two boys sleeping in an inside room, having to jump through a window.
The house, which was owned by Messrs. J. I. and F. R. Lomas, was insured with the Southern Union General Insurance company for £350. The contents were insured with the New Zealand Insurance Company for £250.
Mr. Stedman stated yesterday that he estimated his loss at between £400 and £500, a valuable collection of musical works and books alone being valued by him at £150. A storage shed and a garage at the rear of the house were undamaged.

    1953 Newspaper Report
Tuesday 13th June 1953 - Warwick Daily News
The death occurred in Sydney on December 27 of Mr. Sidney Stedman, former well known Warwick music teacher, who carried on his profession here for a number of years before his departure for the south. The late Mr. Stedman will be remembered as theatre pianist in the old days of open air pictures and before the advent of the talkies. While in Warwick he also taught music at The Scots College, and was for a time organist at St. Mark's Church of England. He is survived by his widow, formerly Miss Vera Anne Beattee, and three sons - Syney, Max and John, all of Sydney. One son. Haden, and a daughter predeceased him.
    Notes about Sydney STEDMAN
Told he is the oldest, but as he does not appear on the 1881 census have left him here, he could have left home by the time of the 1881 census as he would have been around 23 but that would have made his parents, around 18 when they had him.
Death details for Sydney taken from NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, it shows the name of Sydney's father as Henry John so I think it is correct.
On a letter from Elizabeth Maud STEDMAN to her daughter Maude, Maxwell STEDMAN in Australia is mentioned, believe he was a son of Sydney. The address given was 775 Dowling Street Redfern New South Wales Australia
On the 1963 Australian Electoral Roll I have found the following at Flat 1 Dowling Street Redfern New South Wales, Australia
STEDMAN August John. Flat 1 775 Dowling street, draughtsman M
STEDMAN Irene Jean 775 Dowling street, home duties F
STEDMAN Mary Elizabeth 775 Dowling street, home duties, F
STEDMAN Maxwell 775 Dowling street, sales representative M
STEDMAN Sydney Eric 775 Dowling street, manager M
I think because the address being the same at that found in my mother-in-laws belongings that this must be the same family. At present I do not know where the various members fit in. Is one of them the wife of Maxwell and the other children of him, or is Mary Elizabeth actually his mother and is the "Lizzie" that I have shown above as the wife of Sydney MAXWELL.
From this the NSW marriage details show that a Maxwell Sebastian STEDMAN married an Irene Jean STEDMAN in 1952 in Five Dock district, New South Wales, her maiden name was HALL. (This still leaves Mary Elizabeth STEDMAN as possible mother of Maxwell)

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
