On the 24th January 2008 a Cynthia Caie contact me from New Zealand with information about Elizabeth STEDMAN born 1833 on the Chart above. This has gave me the person she married. From this I have found out a lot more information. A Chart will have to be added to show this. I did not pick this marriage up before as on the BMD the Elizabeth STEDMAN marriage in 1853 does not appear. Now I know she married George HANCOCK, he comes up correctly, but there are two men on the page and only one female and it is not Elizabeth.

THE LATE CHARGE OF ROBBERY ATT HUGGENS'S COLLEGE.-
Yesterday (Friday) week, at the quarter sessions, Maistone, Alfred Stedman, on bail, was charged with stealing 5 taps, and 160lbs, of leaden piping, the property of George Henry Bennett, Gravesend, on the 30th November. Mr. Smith appears for the prosecution, and Mr. Addison defended. The prisoner is the son of a builder at Northfleet, and an apprentice of the prosecutor's a plumber, &c., at Gravesend. In November last, prosecutor had some work at Huggen's College, Northfleet, and the prisoner was put on that work, but in about three weeks he was taken off. On the evening of the 30th, a day or two after his being taken form the work, he was seen on the premises of the College, near to house No.5, which was unoccupied, and used as a store-room and work-shop. On the morning of the 1st ult., some brass taps were missed from the house, and early next morning prisoner went to an eating-house, in Gravesend, kept by Mr. Hodgin, and left a parcel, which was afterwards given up to P.C. Norris, who found it contained the brass taps in question. The prisoner was takend into custody, and in a cupboard in the cellar of his father's house was found a quantity of leaden piping cut into pieces. As regarded this piping, however, there was really no evidence to show that any had been stolen. The brass taps found in the bundle resembled those missed, but they could not be sworn to. Several witnesses were called who had known the prisoner from childhood, and they gave him an excellent character. The jury acquitted the prisoner. There was another indictment against him for stealing three other taps that were found in the bundle left at Hodkin's but the jury acquittede him on this charge also.

    NORTHFLEET
SHOCKING ACCIDENT. - On Tuesday, Mr W. J. Harris coroner for the Sittingbourne district of Kent, held an inquest at the Dove Inn, Northfleet, touching the death of Aubrey Percival Gard, aged four years and three months, the son of Mr Arthur Gard, a clothier in business at No. 10, The Hill, Northfleet, which was caused by a tank falling upon him. It appeared from the evidence that the tank was built by a bricklayer named Henry John Stedman on Saturday, may 22nd. It was constructed of bricks and cement, and was 5ft. 10in high and about 2ft. 9in. bu 13in in the clear inside. On the following Wednesday between three and four feet of water were put into the tank; and the next day it burst, and the debris fell upon the deceased and another child, who were playing near, deceased died in 61 hours having been unconscious from the time of the accident.  A question as to the construction of the tank of course arose; and Stedman admitted that he used no iron ties or mainstay to support the structure. It was built from the ground in a corner adjoining the wash-house with a wall at the back and one side. He was not aware what the pressure of water was per foot. Stedman also denied that he gave Mr Gard permission to used the tank; but the latter and his servant stated emphatically that he died. The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death,2 and added: - We are of opinion that the deceased met her death through the negligent manner in which the tank was constructed by Henry John Stedman, and that Stedman was incompetent to have undertaken such construction."

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
