     This is a strange Census return; we know that Harvey and Annie were married in 1909  and the census shows that they have been married 1 year and then for the children 4 
    The 4 surviving has been crossed though and 0 children put in, but there are four children with them, so from this you would think that Harvey had been married before  but on the marriage certificate in 1909 he is down as a Bachelor. 
    From that we can only assume that they had children before they married but in that case the last one Nellie STEMP daughter aged 1 born in Croydon would have been  born after they married. So why not at least put down 1 child surviving at the date of the Census?
    The other children are Annie aged 8, Arthur aged 4 and Sydney aged 2 all born Croydon, Surrey. One final strange entry is in the lines next to Arthur and Sydney and again crossed  through for Infirmity is the words Cripple 22 years, so who does that apply too,? Harvey was a Carman for a Carting Contractor so I would not have thought it was for him, 
    It cannot be for Arthur and Sydney as they were only 4 and 2 respectively so possibly  for Annie the wife? (as I say a very strange Census return)

     Birth registration for children now found, first three were all registered as HOOK, two had Stemp as a second name.
  2. 1909 4 Fullerton Street, Addiscombe, Croydon, Surrey (at marriage)  (down as a Spinster) - Father George HOOK - Carman
    1911 4 Fullerton Road, East Croydon, Surrey.On the 1911 census Annie is shown as having been married 1 year and having had no children BUT crossed through. The fact was she had had four children all of whom survive at the date of this Census and they are all with Harvey and Annie. The last was born after they married, on the marriage certificate. In 1909 Harvey and Annie are shown as Bachelor and Spinster
  3. 1903 22a Cromwell Road, Croydon Common, Croydon, Surrey (at baptism) Parents down as Stephen and Annie HOOK but then the HOOK has been crossed through, for the surname HOOK has been entered but underneath that is girls name a single woman and then for trade or profession single woman has been added. This leads me to believe as the next two children were registered with Stemp in the name that Annie had a different parent with Stephen as the father.

  4. 1906 registered as Arthur Stemp HOOK
    1908 28 Fullerton Road, Croydon Common, Croydon, Surrey (baptism of Arthur) down as Arthur STEMPHOOK, father has been put down as Harvey but then crossed through, Surname has been put down as STEMP and then crossed through and HOOK put in it place, occupation has been put down as Labourer and then crossed through and single woman inserted. But note, dates are incorrect, registration definitely shows as December quarter 1906, baptism definitely shows birth as 4th October 1907, I would think he was therefore really born on 4th October 1906.
