The Attestation Papers for James are dated the 17th January 1894. He stated that he was born in the parish of St George, Peckham, Surrey, but gives his father's name as Hy WHEATON of Somersham his mother as S A WHEATON, No 8 Crofton Road, Peckham, London, and an elder brother B WHEATON of Somersham so we feel this is the right man. He was Private 4809 when he enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment in Huntingdon on the suggestion of Sergeant H TURNER, 5 B K R R C. At that time James was 19 years and 7 months and was a Seaman. He was 5' 5 1/4" tall, weighed 120lbs. of fresh complexion with grey eyes and brown hair. He had a scar in the centre of his forehead and a mole on the back below the left clavicle. From the 17th January 1894 he was in the 2nd Battalion and served in Bedford, Devonport and Aldershot. In December 1895 he was posted still as a Private to the 1st Battalion and was aboard SS Dilwara. Then on the 1st January 1896 was sent to India where he served in Umballa and Solon. His habits were regular, conduct good and he was temperate. Unfortunately for James, on the 21st February 1897, whilst in India, he fell on some stone steps after slipping on a piece of orange peel, fracturing the patella of his left leg traversely "but the separation was not complete". At the hospital in Umballa it was decided not to operate and the fractured portions of the patella were brought into satisfactory apposition by external means. Although the fracture seems to have healed, James only had a limited use of the leg and was unable to do his duty. Following the Court of Enquiry on the 28th August 1897 it was agreed that the problem was an accident, not caused by climate or military service, no aggravated by intemperance or other vice, or by misconduct. James left Bombay for England on the 20th October and sent to a hospital at Netley on the 19th November 1897. As a result of the injury it was decided that James was permanently unfit for service and he was discharged on the 20th September 1897. It was decided that he would be able to earn a living as civilian, although his earning capacity would be halved. At the time of his discharge he had 3 years and 332 days of pensionable service, but there is no information concerning the amount he was to receive.

There is also a Frederick J WHEATON on the War Memorial in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire. Enlisted Chatteris, Cambridgeshire Theatre of War was in France and Flanders
The above information has now been confirmed by the following:
1917 Frederick John Pte 18839 Suffolk Regiment
Information from Forces War Records Site sent by John TERRY 15/10/2014
    Name: Frederick John
    Surname: WHEATON

    Service Number: 18839

    Campaign Medals: Victory Medal
Given the information we have available it is likely that Frederick John Wheaton was entitled to the Victory medal, also called the Inter Allied Victory Medal. This medal was awarded to all who received the 1914 Star or 1914-15 Star and, with certain exceptions, to those who received the British War Medal. It was never awarded alone. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.
Eligibility for this award consisted of having been mobilised, fighting, having served in any of the theatres of operations, or at sea, between midnight 4th/5th August, 1914, and midnight, 11th/12th November, 1918. Women who served in any of the various military organisations in a theatre of operations were also eligible.
    British War Medal
From the information available to us, it is very possible that Frederick John Wheaton was entitled to the British War Medal for service in World War One. This British Empire campaign medal was issued for services between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918.
The medal was automatically awarded in the event of death on active service before the completion of this period.
There were 6 men on Den’s tree who died in the war....I will find the other four (other than Ernest and Frederick...Henry survived)....but then there’s probably more who served without being killed so I need to have a look.....I will find the other four first.....odd really as one of Den’s cousins wrote only last week asking if a particular Thomas was on our tree as she had been to a graveyard in France and seen the name.....another serendipity moment! That’s how I know there were six who were killed in the war!

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
