    Notes for Thomas WHEATON:
No obvious marriage or death in the English Civil Registration Indexes
On trawling through web sites for other information I came across details of a Thomas WHEATON in the 1901 Census of Canada.
He shows his birth date as 8 October 1862, and birth place as London, England.
There was no Thomas WHEATON birth registered at this time in England
However, a Thomas WHEATON was born on the 18 October 1863 at 5 Guildford Place, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, the Thomas to whom this record belongs, and who was a member of my husband's family.
The Canadian Thomas says he emigrated in 1874 when he would have been 12, which is rather young.
However, the Thomas WHEATON in Den's family had rather a dysfunctional family which could be the reason for such an emigration. (However, I have since found information which suggests he went to America in 1888 - see below)
Thomas's parents were Robert and Margaret Scott PARKER. They had two children, Philip born 20 February 1855 and John born 8 September 1857 both in Somersham, Huntingdonshire. They then married on the 30 January 1860 at St John the Baptist Church in Somersham before moving to London where in 1860 a son, William WHEATON was born in Drury Lane, Middlesex (no Civil Registration record). In 1861 they were living at 1 Crawford Place, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, but without son Philip who was living with an aunt, Elizabeth CASTLE at Parberry's Row, Enfield, Middlesex.
A daughter, Mary Ann, was born in 1862 at 5 Guildford Place, Clerkenwell, Middlesex but she died within weeks of her birth. Thomas was then born on the 18th October 1863 also at 5 Guildford Place, Clerkenwell, Middlesex.
Robert WHEATON, Thomas's father died 28 February 1867 at the Small Pox Hospital, Upper Holloway, Middlesex Age 55. The Death certificate showed "Small pox 12 days complaint unmodified & accd in difft circ certified" which has not yet been investigated. Robert's address was given as 16 William Street, Newington, Surrey where we assume the family were living at this time; Thomas would have been 4 years 4 months.
Just over a year later Robert's widow, Margaret WHEATON, née PARKER, gave birth to a daughter, Frances WHEATON on the 30 July 1868 at 20 Brandon Street, Walworth, Surrey, she only survived a few months, and was followed by Alice Maude WHEATON born at 55 Beckway Street, Walworth, Surrey in 1872, who also soon died.
At the time of the census in 1871 Margaret WHEATON was working as a nurse at St Guy's Hospital, but Thomas, now 8 years old could not be found. His oldest brother, Philip, was at Windmill Hill, Enfield, Middlesex (RG10/1344 folio 6 page 3), again living with Elizabeth CASTLE, Head, Widow, Age 60, Annuitant born Enfield, Middlesex, Aunt to Philip WHEATON. Neither John nor William have been found on this census either.
In 1881 Margaret WHEATON was a dressmaker lodging with a George WEST in Newington Surrey, and in the June quarter of 1882 at St Saviour District, London Margaret WHEATON married George WEST. However, at the 1877 and 1881 marriages of Philip, Margaret's eldest son, the witnesses were George and Margaret WEST.
Of Thomas's surviving siblings, Philip married twice, was a Blacksmith, lived in Enfield, Middlesex and had a total of thirteen children. John, the next brother never married and was moved from the Wandsworth Asylum to the Three Counties Lunatic Asylum, Stotfold, Bedfordshire where he was living in 1881 and 1891; he died there on the 10 March 1892, aged 35 years. He could have been a shoemaker, he could have been blind but he was also described as a "Sailor from Somersham. Records for brother William have not been found in the UK.
So, with his father's death in 1867, followed by the birth and death of two half sisters, as he was not living with his mother in 1871, perhaps he was with relatives using their name at the time, and travelled to Canada with them.
Given the information in the foregoing it has been decided to include details about the Thomas found on the 1901 Canadian Census until it is proved that he is not the same man. Subsequently more information has been found on the 1891 and 1911 census returns, also details of a marriage. Further details about Thomas's arrival in Canada suggest he did arrive in 1874 age 10 with a William WHEATON age 14. This would suggest we have the right information as we have been unable to find details for Thomas's brother William in the English records.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
