So now have to try and find if Thomas Edward HODGSON was same person as Thomas E WHITAKER in the USA.. Have now found in 1891 UK Census with them down as HODGSON, which also gives a place of birth for Thomas. I therefore think he was born as Thomas Edward HODGSON and changed the family changed their names to WHITAKER when moving from Australia to the USA between 1897 and 1900. But you will see I have found a possible birth registration in Leeds for a Thomas Edwin WHITAKER. So might have just had a reason to call himself HODGSON in Australia.
