    ALFRED WRATTEN
    Report of Inquest
The report of the inquest into the death at sea of Alfred WRATTEN appears in the Kent Coast Times,August 29, 1895, at page 5:
    "A SKIPPER KILLED AT SEA"
Early on Friday, after the fierce thunder-storm which had been encountered in the small hours of that morning, the Ramsgate smack Albert, belonging to Mr Hatton, arrived in Harbour, with the sad intelligence that the skipper, Alfred Wratten, aged 33, had been killed by a portion of the topmast breaking and falling upon him during the heavy storm which was experienced when the vessel was about twelve miles distant, east-south-east of the North Foreland. The fatality was at once reported to the police, and between ten and eleven o'clock the body of the deceased was brought ashore and conveyed to the mortuary to await the inquest. Dr. Hardman held the inquiry, touching the death of Alfred Wratten, at the Town Hall on Friday afternoon. Mr. J. B. Powell was
chosen foreman of the jury, and the following witnesses were called:-
Mr. G. H. Halstead, surgeon, said he saw the deceased at 10:15 that morning on the smack Albert. He appeared to have been dead a few hours. Witness found that the vault and base of the skull was broken and there was a large quantity of blood coming from the right ear. There were no signs of death being due to lightning. The injuries must necessarily have been fatal.
Stephen Pidduck identified the body lying at the mortuary as that of his brother-in-law, Alfred Wratten. He was 33 years of age, and a mariner. Deceased was married and had two children. George Edward Edmonds, second hand on the Ramsgate smack Albert, deposed that the deceased was skipper of that vessel. Early that (Friday) morning they were about twelve miles east south east of the North Foreland and experienced the thunderstorm. At the time
of the accident witness was on deck. They were riding fast to a wreck, and had put some chafing gear on the ropes. Deceased was on the fore part of the vessel, fastening a rope. The vessel pitched in the sea, and he heard the fore topmast crack, and when he looked round he saw the deceased lying on the deck. The fore topmast was suspended by the back-stays, and he supposed it had struck the deceased, but it was all done in a moment. Witness
went to him at once and found him to be senseless. Blood was coming from his right ear. He never regained consciousness. They took him below, washed and bathed his face, and applied ice to his head. This occurred between 4.30 and 4.45. He died at about half past five o'clock. The topmast had broken off, but the gear was alright. The force of the vessel, suddenly pitching, with her bowsprit under the water, would cause that to break. It had broken round the part where the nails had been put in and rusted; otherwise, it appeared sound. No sails were hoisted; they were all lowered on deck.
In reply to a juror, the witness said the vessel was not insured in the provident fund. The owners had to do this, and unless they agreed one member of the crew could not make such provision for himself in case of accident.
The Coroner briefly summed up the evidence; and a verdict of Accidental Death was at once returned by the jury.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
