    Notes for James CRACKNELL
Following 1861 census information it would appear that a James CRACKNELL/Mary Ann marriage took place between 1853 (see Hannah Isabel COOMES notes) and 1861. There are two, Mary Ann CORNELL in December quarter 1856 Thstford District, Norfolk and Mary Ann Balfour SAYER June quarter 1856 Portsea District, Hampshire. No census after 1881 can be found for a Mary Ann CRACKNELL. Therefore, due to uncertainties no second marriage for James has been entered at present.
“Daughter in law” Helen WEIR on the 1861 census could mean step daughter. The only Helen WEIR found on the 1851 census was daughter of William and Helen WEIR who were warden and matron of the St Albans Workhouse, Hertfordshire. Helen the mother was born in Scotland about 1793

The following article and picture appeared in
    Enfield Gazette. 17th July 1975
    Occasional Notes
    by "Townsman
    for Churchbury Farm, Enfield,
where the CRACKNELL family lived for many years.

Centuries of market gardening and farming lay behind the history of this timber cottage and its heavy red pantiled roof. It stood within a few yards of the junction of Baker Street and Lancaster Road as a venerable relic of the borough's rural past until modernity swept it away in a cloud of dust during the 1950s.
Known as Churchbury Farm its oddly assorted brick additions made to the original wooden portion were indications of the growing influence of the Cracknells who occupied it for some two hundred years until its demolitions. The Cracknell family is still well represented in the parish.
The old house stood a little way back from the road frontage in Baker Street, the back facing a rough, narrow way then known as Cracknell's Lane, which is now the western end of Tenniswood Road. Patients leaving the surgery of Dr Eric Ridge and his partners are facing the site upon which the Churchbury Farm building stood on ground that today is part of the playing field of Chase Boys School.
The whole of this area, as old-timers fondly recall, was until development swept in like a tidal wave around the 1930s mainly orchard and nursery land. The Chace Boys playing field was covered by fruit trees, and at least once , in a time of glut, the Cracknells allowed the public in to help themselves at a flat admission fee of sixpence a head, and North Enfield was awash with a flood of ripe cherries which overflowed to wide areas.
In the British Directory of trade and commerce, issued in 1791, John Cracknell is listed as a shopkeeper and gardener, and when his son was born in 1793 the family, it is believed had been here for at least twenty years. No doubt it was this son, also named John, who was referred to as a market gardener in Baker Street in the columns of Pigot's Directory of 1839
Presumably the wooden portion ot the group of building was the scene of their earliest activities. At the business expanded the outbuilding included barns, a granary, cartshed, and a cowshed. There was, in addition, a very old and very large bakery oven.
The upper part of Tenniswood Road was then a lovely drive approached by way of a stile from Churchbury Lane. It led between trees, roses paeonies and daffodils toward Churchbury House, which was situation near the New River. Orchards and meadows were cropped by the Cracknells, and they had also extensive orchard holdings in Carterhatch Lane and on each side of Churchbury Lane.
For about a hundred years the family's stall in Covent Garden was well known occupying a prominent position in front of St. Paul's church. The farm equipment was sold in 1930and the developers took over. By 1952 the Cracknells had left the old home to the demolition men, the orchard was uprooted, every trace of a busy past removed and nothing left of the family's long association but a solitary tree which stood alongside the house, and which remains today.
In the picture the light patch on the extreme left represents a corrugated iron fence which then flanked the northern side of the former Cracknells Lane. It is near that point that the Carlton House surgery now stands.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
