    Information from John WANSTLL 5/6/2006
The following account was written about Charles HEATHER by my mother’s sister; as a child she spent a great deal of time at her grand parent’s home.
A grand daughter of Charles HEATHER, Vera Edith WANSTALL[nee SIMMONDS] wrote this account of her grandfather:-
At the time I knew them they lived in the White House, Hascombe, near Godalming Surrey, and I believe my mother Mary [the first born daughter of Charles HEATHER & Ruth STEMP] was born at Bramley, Surrey.
Charles and Ruth had sixteen children, most of whom managed to survive. Of the children I knew, 'Uncle Fred' who married Edie (no children), Auntie Nell [Ellen] who married and had one son, Harold (moved to Cornwall). Uncle Alan, married to Ada, no children, Uncle Len, married to Daisy (no children), Uncle Percy who died in the Great War), Uncle Will married to Jessie three children (twins) and a daughter, Auntie Emily, widowed early, with one son Ronald; (I now know that Emily married Sydney HAYWARD, he was killed in a tragic mining accident in south Wales, a few months after their marriage] Auntie Florence married to Bert, one son, Bertie, Auntie Grace married to Herbert, no children, Uncle Arthur married to Leah, two daughters, also Auntie Ruth - not married, having died at only Age 16.
Grand-Father Charles HEATHER, he was about medium height (fairish) and a gentle but tough customer if necessary. He is best described, as a tough but gentle little man, not over short but not over tall, either, probably about 5-ft. 5 inches. On Sundays he always went to the little village church, he was sides-man there. Off he would go in his best Sunday black suit, always complete with black bowler, a very respectable and much respected man, Mr. HEATHER. On one occasion, though, tramping across the hills with his week's wage in his pocket, on his homeward way, two idlers jumped out from the thicket where they had been lurking and attempted to rob him of his wages. They really got more than they bargained for, the first one being flung out of the fight by him, the second recoiled, having been implored by his partner, "For God's sake, leave him alone Harry, he's a proper little terror", And away went my grandfather Charles HEATHER on his way, complete with his wages - of which he had no intention of parting with.
It just so happens, I do know and this I record for the benefit of any children who may come after me and be interested in the family History. Vera Edith Wanstall. 19731861 Thorncombe Street, Bramley, Surrey

    Information from John Wanstall 5/6/2006
An account was written by Kay PARKE, grand daughter of Emily Matilda:
Emily Matilda was born 3rd May 1892 and married Sydney Thomas HAYWARD on 27th September 1919. They moved to Porth in Wales where my father was born 7 November 1920. Within six weeks of his birth Sydney was killed in a mining accident. He was a mine engineer and was not on duty when there was a fall; the on duty engineer was found to be drunk, and Sydney went down to assess the damage. There was a further fall and he pushed his 16 year old assistant to safety, but was fatally injured himself. Emily then moved back to Surrey. Kay PARKE

    Campaign Medals:
    Victory Medal
Given the information we have available it is likely that Percy HEATHER was entitled to the Victory medal, also called the Inter Allied Victory Medal. This medal was awarded to all who received the 1914 Star or 1914-15 Star and, with certain exceptions, to those who received the British War Medal. It was never awarded alone. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.
Eligibility for this award consisted of having been mobilised, fighting, having served in any of the theatres of operations, or at sea, between midnight 4th/5th August, 1914, and midnight, 11th/12th November, 1918. Women who served in any of the various military organisations in a theatre of operations were also eligible.
    British War Medal
From the information available to us, it is very possible that Percy HEATHER was entitled to the British War Medal for service in World War One. This British Empire campaign medal was issued for services between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918.
The medal was automatically awarded in the event of death on active service before the completion of this period.
    Service: British Army
    Regiment: Royal Sussex Regiment
Royal Sussex Regiment during World War 1
Since 1815 the balance of power in Europe had been maintained by a series of treaties. In 1888 Wilhelm II was crowned ‘German Emperor and King of Prussia’ and moved from a policy of maintaining the status quo to a more aggressive position. He did not renew a treaty with Russia, aligned Germany with the declining Austro-Hungarian Empire and started to build a Navy rivalling that of Britain. These actions greatly concerned Germany’s neighbours, who quickly forged new treaties and alliances in the event of war. On 28th June 1914 Franz Ferdinand the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne was assassinated by the Bosnian-Serb nationalist group Young Bosnia who wanted pan-Serbian independence. Franz Joseph's the Austro-Hungarian Emperor (with the backing of Germany) responded aggressively, presenting Serbia with an intentionally unacceptable ultimatum, to provoke Serbia into war. Serbia agreed to 8 of the 10 terms and on the 28th July 1914 the Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia, producing a cascade effect across Europe. Russia bound by treaty to Serbia declared war with Austro-Hungary, Germany declared war with Russia and France declared war with Germany. Germany’s army crossed into neutral Belgium in order to reach Paris, forcing Britain to declare war with Germany (due to the Treaty of London (1839) whereby Britain agreed to defend Belgium in the event of invasion). By the 4th August 1914 Britain and much of Europe were pulled into a war which would last 1,566 days, cost 8,528,831 lives and 28,938,073 casualties or missing on both sides.
The regiment raised a total of 23 battalions and was awarded 69 battle honours and 4 Victoria Crosses, losing 7,096 men during the course of the war. St. Georges Chapel in Chichester Cathedral was restored after the war and serves as a memorial to all members of the Regiment who fell during the war.
11th (Service) Battalion (1st South Down) and 12th (Service) Battalion (2nd South Down)
07.09.1914 The 11th formed and on 03.11.1914 the 12th formed, both at Bexhill by C. Lieut. Col. Lowther M.P. and the committee and then moved to Maidstone.
01.07.1915 Taken over by the war office and then moved to Aldershot and then Witley to join the 116th Brigade of the 39th Division.

From the 1939 Census above it appears that Percy was a Widower, we think he possibly married a Nora P HUNT in June quarter 1920 in Guildford district, Surrey, she was born in September quarter 1896 in Buckinghamshire and died March quarter 1927 in Guildford district, Surrey Aged 31. It is possible that they had children but as it appears there were two families with HERBERT as their surname and HUNT as the mothers maiden name living in the Guildford area of Surrey we are not certain which children belong to which family.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
