  6. 1851 Census - Gomshall, Shere, Surrey. There was a lodger a James BRISHAW with the family. He was 66, a retired shoe and boot maker, born Shere, Surrey
  7. There are various spellings of this name, I was originally given it as it appears above, but is also appears as Shepard, Shepperd and Sheppard. I am sure it is all the same family as the names tie up in all cases.
  8. IGI Baptisms. I have only found Mary Ann on the IGI at the present time. (Winifred) Ann is down as Winifred Ann on the IGI but down as Ann on the 1851 Census. I can find no baptism for John at the present time.
  9. IGI Marriage, I think this will be the correct marriage, as Sarah was born in Rudgwick, Sussex. Someone has submitted a marriage to the LDS which give a marriage of a Henry Shepherd to a Mrs Shepherd in Rudgwick in 1837 but the one I have given is extracted from the actual records.
  10. 1861 Census - Gravel Pit Lane, Shere, Surrey
  11. 1861 Census - 1 Shermans Cottages, Shere, Surrey. Thomas, William and John were visitors with a Henry and Louisa MUNDAY and family.
  12. 1861 Census - 4 Storm Cottages, Shere, Surrey. Ann was a visitor with a Hannah MICHIE who was a widow and her children. With Ann was another visitor a George SHEPHERD aged 4 born Shere, I would think another son of Henry and Sarah, and I have shown him as such above. 
  13. IGI Baptism - have found a baptism for a Walter George Shepherd with parents Henry and Sarah as shown, on the 1861 Census there is a George SHEPHERD as a visitor with his sister Ann who has also lost her first name as baptised. I am fairly certain this is the correct person.
  14. 1861 Census - Compasses Public House and Grocers Shop, Gomshall Lane, Shere, Surrey - Mary Ann was a visitor with this family, a John GROVER, aged 51 a Brewer, Grocer and Victualler born Alton, Hampshire and his family. We now have Ann, Thomas, William John, Mary Ann and Walter George as visitors but all in Shere and all in adjoining houses, and we know that Henry and Sarah were still alive and had their youngest son Alfred with them.
  15. 1861 Census - Shere Street, Shere, Surrey. Henry was a lodger with a family called HUMPHREY on this census. We know that Jane was married by this census, so it only leave Lucy who I have not been able to find on this Census.
  16. 1841 Census - Colskitchen?, Shere, Surrey. I have found a child Sarah born in 1836 who I did not have before, she is down as Sarah jnr on the Census. The 1841 only says if a person was born in the county or not, and she has like her parents an N next to her name, whereas Jane has a Y, so I assume that Sarah was born in Sussex, possibly in Rudgwick which is where her parents were married. 
  17. IGI Baptism, see note 16, from the fact that Sarah was not born in Surrey I looked on the IGI for a baptism in Sussex and found one with Henry and Sarah as parents in Rudgwick as I expected.
  18. 1871 Census - Felda? Moor, Shere, Surrey (Just a note but immediately above Henry and Sarah on this census, at Woodhouse Farm there is a servant a Jane L TICKNER, aged 14 a General Servant Domestic, born Shere, Surrey. I cannot at present fit her in anywhere, the Jane SHEPHERD above who married William did not marry until 1861, so although I would have thought this the most likely place where she would fit in it would mean they had her some time before they married.
  19. 1871 Census - Shere Surrey. They had a daughter Fanny SHEPHERD, aged 6 months born Shere, Surrey. The occupation for William looks as though it could be painter but equally it could be something else there are two letters that have ascenders, so it looks something like pailiter, the first ascender is not crossed.
  20. 1871 Census - Pitland Street, Shere, Surrey. They had a daughter, Sarah L, aged 1 born Shere, Surrey. Writing again very bad on this census, same person as writing on Note 19, I cannot read the birth place of Kitty, it looks as though it starts with Horse and the e of he Horse is quite clear and it says Surrey, so this tends to rule out Horsham which is in Sussex but the only name I can think of that starts with Hors. Ancestry.com has come up with the name Harsewell, Surrey which is a possiblity. Then looking on Google I cannot find a Harsewill but Horsewell is he most likely answer to this. I might find that it is clearer on a later census.
  21. 1871 Census - Felda Green, Shere, Surrey. They had a daughter, a Emily, aged 6 months, born Shere, Surrey.
  22. 1871 Census - Sutton, Shere, Surrey. Cannot find a marriage on the BMD that fits, I have looked in Sussex, where Elizabeth was born but nothing comes up which would lead me to believe it was the correct marriage.
  23. 1881 Census - Nyes Cottage, Abinger, Surrey. Six children on this Census.
  24. 1881 Census - Felday Moor, Shere, Surrey. They had Five children on this Census. 
  25. 1881 Census - Sutton Place, Shere, Surrey
  26. 1881 Census - Shere Village, Shere, Surrey. Three children on this Census. 
  27. 1881 Census - Shere Village, Shere, Surrey.
  28. 1881 Census - Shere Village, Shere, Surrey. They had a daughter Florence, aged 2 months, born Shere, Surrey. They were with a family called BALCHIN. Walter was down as head, so Henry BALCHIN is down as father-in-law, aged54, a General Labourer, born Wisborough, Sussex, his wife down as mother-in-law is Marian A, aged 49 a Laundress, born Billingshurst, Sussex, then there is Henry BALCHIN, brother-in-law, aged 21 Practical Engineer, born Petworth, Sussex, Ellen BALCHIN, aged 12 sister-in-law born Billinghurst, Sussex, George A A BALCHIN, aged 9 brother-in-law born Billinghurst, Sussex a Scholar, and Minnie BALCHIN, aged 2 sister-in-law, born Shere, Surrey.
  29. 1891 Census - Gomshall Road, Shere, Surrey.
  30. I have found the death of Sarah on the BMD but at present cannot find the death of Henry, I also cannot find him on the 1901 Census.
  31. 1881 Census - Heathbourne Stables, Beckenham, Kent. They had a daughter, Ethel, aged 2, born Beckenham, Kent on this Census.
  32. 1891 Census - 3 Felde Cottages, Shere, Surrey. Two children still with them on this census
  33. 1891 Census - Felday Bottom, Shere, Surrey. Seven children with them on this Census. 
  34. 1891 Census - Cottages, Shere, Surrey. One daughter still with them, there was an Eliza WHALE (MIALE -Ancestry interpretation), aged 50 (70) an Association Nurse Sick, born Horsell, Surrey, which throws into doubt the details of the marriage date and maiden name of Kitty. It might therefore not be STEVENS but WHALE, as Eliza is down as being single. On the other hand it could have been the second marriage of Kitty as she is six years older than Henry. I would think this is the most likely answer to this problem. Having looked at the Censuses I cannot be sure what the answer to this problem is. It appears that Horsell is where Kitty was born and a Kitty STEVENS comes up for this at the correct age, and she was a servant in 1851 with the name STEVENS, so I feel I have the correct person and correct marriage, but where does Eliza come in. I cannot find an Eliza STEVENS born in Horsell, but I also cannot find anyone with a name like WHALE or MIALE, so I am back to square one.
  35. 1891 Census - Holly Road, Twickenham, Middlesex. Two children on this Census.
  36. 1891 Census - High Patir? Road, Merrow, Surrey.  Two children on this Census. 
  37. 1901 Census - Holmbury St Mary, Shere, Surrey. Six children on this Census.
  38. 1901 Census - Lower Street, Shere, Surrey. One child on this Census. 
  39. 1901 Census - Holmbury St Mary, Shere, Surrey. Two children on this Census.
  40. 1901 Census - High Street, Wendover, Buckinghamshire. Three children on this Census.
  41. 1901 Census - 23 Bright Hill, Holy Trinity, Guilford, Surrey. Emily is down as Head of Household but she has an M next to her name not a W so it would appear that Walter/William/George Shepherd is still alive. There were three children with her and a boarder.

    I have put these charts and the ones off of it as SHEPHERD, on many of the Censuses it is spelt SHEPHARD, so it is more than possibly that this is the spelling and the descendants of these families might have it spelt with the A and not the E.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family.
