  1. 1851 5 Webb Street, Newington,
    1856  5 Union Street, Walworth
1861 Census 9 Nelson Place, St Peters, Walworth, Surrey (RG/349 Folio 125 Page 7)
1871 Census 8 Union Road, Camberwell, London.
Kathleen Metcalf on 21st November 2005 wrote - comment: I don't know how I found your website.  I was looking under Albany Road and saw the name Simpson. My family Reardons lived in Kempshead Road. My grandmother Emma used to go into the pub called the Tap which was opposite the Simpsons Undertakers. Mr. Simpson used to go into this pub sometimes too. One story is he put his hand on my grandmothers shoulder and she said are you measuring me up for my box.
Another story I have is that my mother and her cousin John - both Reardons were on a motorbike and went through the front window of the undertakers in Albany Road. They thought this extremely funny. My mother also went for an interview at the undertakers for a receptionist. Mr. Simpson would not give her a job saying she would cry every time someone came in for an order. This was probably very true of her. I hadn't heard of any other Simpson's undertakers. The
shop is still called Simpson's in Albany Road. Hope you don't mind me e mailing but thought it  nice to know about ones ancestors other than a name. My mother was born in 1914. It was pre second world war that these stories happened. I expect our family used Simpson's as the family undertakers. My family always spoke of them with respect.
  2. 1851 5 Webb Street, Newington,
1861 Census 9 Nelson Place, St Peters, Walworth, Surrey (RG/349 Folio 125 Page 7)
Living at the same address was a Joseph HALL, Head aged 45 a Shoemaker, born Lambeth and his wife Ellen HALL age 50 a Binder from Falmouth, Cornwall. It is more than possible that this couple is related to Sarah. Possibly Joseph was her brother.
1871 Census 8 Union Road, Camberwell, London.
1888 At marriage father shown as Richard (deceased) Undertaker but I am certain correct family as mother was living with Joseph on 1891 Census.
1891 Census - 75 Albany Road, Camberwell, London.  Sarah was living with her youngest son Joseph and his family.
1901 Census - 75 Albany Road, Camberwell, London
  3. 1862 Union Street, Lambeth (address at marriage)
1871 Census - 12 Acre Lane, Newington, Surrey
On the 1881 Census there was a family living at 54 Albany Road, Camberwell, the Head was a Joseph W SIMPSON Aged 30 Undertaker born Walworth, Surrey. At first glance this would appear to be the same family, if the W stood for Wade and the fact that he was an Undertaker from Walworth. I have not added him to the chart below as he would have been born in 1851, and therefore it would not have been possible to come from the family below, but it is possible that he belonged to the previous generation with Henry (note 1 above) as his father and a brother to Henry Wade below, the rest of the family was Mary A Wife aged 26, William C Son 2 and Rose and Emily F both aged 4 months all born in Camberwell, Surrey. There was a memorial card dated August 1900 with J W Simpson 96 Albany Road, Old Kent Road on it which would have been the above family and I am told that Henry Simpson owned two funeral parlours, one in East Street Walworth and the other in East Dulwich, Aquilla had premises in Albany Road, Camberwell, which again seems to tie up with the above information.
1891 Census -  48 Queen Street, Walworth, Surrey. There was an Emma DACKOMBE niece aged 10 born Walworth, Surrey with the family. Mary Ann Elizabeth RODGERS née SIMPSON, her husband and children were in the same premises
  4. 1881 Census 241 East Street, Walworth, Surrey
I have added John to this chart as the amount of coincidences are too many for him not to be part of the family. In 1881 he is living in the premises of the Simpson Undertakers, he is a shoemaker as is his brother. He does not appear with the rest of the family on the 1851 Census.
  5. 1851 5 Webb Street, Newington,
1861 Census 9 Nelson Place, St Peters, Walworth, Surrey (RG/349 Folio 125 Page 7)
1862 Lambeth Walk, Lambeth, London (at marriage)
1871 5 South Street, Walworth, Surrey
1881 53 Rodney Place East, Trinity Newington, Newington, London.
  6. 1851 5 Webb Street, Newington,
1861 Census 9 Nelson Place, St Peters, Walworth, Surrey (RG/349 Folio 125 Page 7)
1869 Union Road, Newington, Surrey (address at marriage)
1871 3 Newham Street, St Peter Walworth, Newington, London
1872 21 South Street, Walworth, Surrey (baptism of Emma Florence)
1881 8 Derwent Terrace, Peckham, Camberwell, London
1889 20 George Street, Greenwich, Kent (baptism of Augusta Eliza and Grace Lilian)
1891 13 Edward Road, Greenwich, London
1901 39 Kensing Road, Greenwich, London
1911 75 Billington Road, New Cross S E. Mary is down as being married (not widowed) but husband not with her. She is down as having been married 42 years and having had 11 children 7 of whom survive and 4 of whom who have died at the date of this Census.
  7. 1851 5 Webb Street, Newington,
1861 Census 9 Nelson Place, St Peters, Walworth, Surrey (RG/349 Folio 125 Page 7)
1870 Runham Street, Walworth, Surrey (at marriage)
1871 5 Runham Street, St Peter, Newington, Surrey
    1881 Not found at present
    1891 Not found at present
    1901 Not found at present
1911 18 Gibbon Road, Nunhead, Peckham S E. There is an Eliza AYRES down as married but no husband down with her. She has had no children and no length of time for marriage is given. She is a boarder with a William Thomas WATSON and family. I do feel this is the correct Eliza. However after extensive searching I cannot find her on the 1881, 1891 or 1901 Census.
    Information for William AYRES
1870 Aylesbury Street, Walworth, Surrey (at marriage) - Father James AYRES - Parchment Maker
  8. 1871 Census
    1881 54 Albany Road, Camberwell
1890 54 Albany Road, Camberwell (Baptisms of Rosa, Emily and Ernest)
1891 54 Albany Road, Camberwell (All births for entire family put down as Camberwell)
    1901 94 Albany Road, Camberwell
1911 Census - 94 Albany Road, St Mary Newington, Newington South, London
1914 - Joseph is listed in the 1914 Directory as follows as is Aquila Wade
The Post Office London Directory 1914 Trade & Professional Part IV Page heading Trades Directory 1914 UND-UPH
    Sub heading Undertakers
Simpson Jsph Wade & Sons 36 Albany Rd SE
Simpson Aquila Wade 241 East St Walworth SE & 101 Elsted St Walworth
There is in existence a Memorial Card with the various bits of information we have for the Simpson family for a J W Simpson dated 1900. Unfortunately this cannot be the same person as below as he was alive on the 1901 census.
  9. 1861 Census 9 Nelson Place, St Peters, Walworth, Surrey (RG/349 Folio 125 Page 7)
1871 Census 8 Union Road, Camberwell, London. (Having found this family on the 1871 it has increased in size by five children from the information we had before, although we had Jane we did not have Ellen who was born before her. There are also the twins Sophie and Alice as well as a William W and a James W. On the Simpson Chart 0401 it mentions a memorial card for a J W Simpson, and the fact that it cannot be Joseph W as he was still alive, with the finding of a James it opens up the possibility that it was for him.) It is also interesting that we are interested in the Simpson family as Undertakers the occupation of two sons, Henry and Joseph and on the 1871 census we find that their father was also put down as an Undertaker, by 1875 he was back to the shoe business, but on the 1871 two of his daughters were boot finishers.
1872 36 Hill Street, Newington, Southwark, London (at marriage) Ellen is down as being 22 but I believe she was only about 17, on the 1881 Census her age is correct as it was on the previous censuses. As her father is a Henry SIMPSON Undertaker I do believe this is the correct marriage
1876 East Street, Camberwell, London (baptism of Ellen Maud)
1881 30 Odell Street, Camberwell, London
1882 7 Victory Place, Camberwell, Southwark, London (baptism of Rosa)
1883 38 St George Sreet, Peckham, South, London (baptism of Ellen Jane)
1886 50 Blakes Road, Peckham, Southwark, London (baptism of Charles Henry and Ada Florence) Certain correct children as some address as brother Henry William who was baptised about three weeks later) Dates of birth not given but would have been about 13 and 10 respectively) Mothers name is give a Helen not Ellen.
1886 50 Blakes Road Peckham, Southwark, London (baptism of Henry William)
1887 24 Dartnell Road, Camberwell, Southwark, London (baptism of James Ponsworth)
1891 34 Kemphead, Camberwell, London. Ellen is down as Head of family, Charles is now with them.
1890 34 Kempshead Road, Camberwell, Southwark, London (baptism of Alice May)
1893 30 Calmington Road, Camberwell, Southwark, London (baptism of William Sponsworth)
1901 30 Calmington Road, Camberwell, London
1911 18 Jardin Street, Albany Rd, Camberwell S E. Ellen is down as a Widow - crossed through is shows she had been married 38 years and had had 12 children 6 of whom survive and 6 of whom had died.
  10. 1861 Census 9 Nelson Place, St Peters, Walworth, Surrey (RG/349 Folio 125 Page 7)
1871 Census 8 Union Road, Camberwell, London.
1875 East Street, Newington, London (address at marriage)

1887 Ravensdon Street, Kennington, (baptism of Lilian)
1891 Census - 37 Ravensdon Street, Kennington, Lambeth, London
  11. 1861 Census 9 Nelson Place, St Peters, Walworth, Surrey (RG/349 Folio 125 Page 7)
1871 Census 8 Union Road, Camberwell, London.

1871 Census 8 Union Road, Camberwell, London.
1888 25 Park Street, Lambeth (address at marriage)
  13. 1861 Census 9 Nelson Place, St Peters, Walworth, Surrey (RG/349 Folio 125 Page 7)
1871 Census - 1871 Census 8 Union Road, Camberwell, London.
    1881 Census - 46 Bagshot Street, St Mary's Newington
1891 Census - 123 Albany Road, Camberwell. William was a widower living on his ownl, widower, age 30, Undertaker, and appeared to be lodging with the Souter family.
1891 11 Waterloo Road (addresses at second marriage)
1901 Census -  107 Camden Grove North, Camberwell. Also at the same address were two women, Jane and Charlotte Simpson, sisters, aged 66 and 60.

  14. 1871 Census 8 Union Road, Camberwell, London.

On 13th December 2009 I redid the notes on this page. It was very confusing so some of the addresses might not be correct. I will slowly work through and check them all. Lots of material to add as baptism, marriages etc for London now available online as is he 1911 Census. It has helped sort out the SIMPSON family, which I had struggled for years to get the right children with the right families etc. At least four additional marriages have been added.

Again updated on 4th April 2013. Even more added with several more marriages and therefore charts from them, ie NASH, GOLDTHORPE and FERRIS.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
