CARTER/DAVIS Chart 0403

This is a Chart for Domincus Carter, Lydia Smith, Sophronia Babcock, Sylvia Ameretta Meacham, Mary Ette Durfee, Eliza Babcock
Polly Milner, Elizabeth Brown, Caroline Marie Hubbard, Frances Nash and William Henry Davis

As can be seen  this is the most involved chart I have put on, Dominicus had nine wives, several of them at the same time, and had at least 48 children (I might not have covered them all). A lot of these children then married and again their husband and wives over time had more than one wife or husband. It has become impossible to show all the relationships and I have endeavoured to show just the Carter person (male or female) from this chart and the children for them. This. in some cases has proved difficult, as all the families on the censuses are living in the same household and it has proved difficult to decide which child belongs to which wife etc. and I am sure  there will be errors in what I have shown. The information has been taken from various Web Sites, Family Trees both on Ancestry and on the General Web, from the IGI and from information found on Ancestry.com and other Genealogy Web Sites. It is still someway off of completion, there being just over 100 charts to be put on for the grandchildren of Dominicus and his various wives. There are lots of pictures of the family to be found but I have just shown a picture of Frances NASH as this is the line back where the connection to my own family happens, hence the reason from this being the only link to be shown going back.

The early settlers in Utah County were much troubled with Indian depredations during the years 1850–1857 and an efficient military organization, known as the Utah County Militia, was organized, which rendered efficient service in protecting the settlers. In 1852 Apostle George A. SMITH was called by the authorities of the Church to locate at Provo and preside over the colony. He chose Isaac Higbee and Dominicus CARTER as his counsellors.

Born in humble circumstances in Scarborough, Cumberland county, Maine, Dominicus CARTER was the son of John and Hannah Knight Libby CARTER. His father was a farmer, and Dominicus along with the rest of the family worked the farm. He had no formal schooling, but he did learn the trade of blacksmithing.
He married Lydia SMITH in 1828 and a few years later they joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. (Some records have 30 June 1832, others have 30 June 1834.) They moved to Kirtland (it appears they were in Kirtland by 1834) where he "had the privilege of hearing and listening to the teachings of the Prophet Joseph SMITH"
In 1838 Dominicus and Lydia Smith CARTER were a part of Kirtland Camp, the large wagon train that made the exodus from Kirtland to Missouri. While travelling, they lost their two-year-old daughter Sarah Emily. Then, twenty days after arriving in Far West, Lydia died, leaving Dominicus with four children. The following month, November of 1838, he married Sophronia BABCOCK. Together they endured the trials of expulsion from Missouri.
In 1839 Dominicus took his first plural wife, Sylvia Ameret MEACHAM, and in 1844 he took another – Mary DURFEE. He also was married to Sophronia BABCOCK's younger sister Eliza BABCOCK. It appears that Dominicus and Eliza were married in 1846 during the Nauvoo period, but she was back with her mother soon after as evidenced by the Winter Quarters Wards Membership Lists. Eliza crossed the plains as Eliza BABCOCK, and in 1855 she married John GROVES.
Dominicus was living near Nauvoo when the Prophet Joseph SMITH and his brother Hyrum were killed.
The trials of those days are well known and don't need to be repeated. It is said that Dominicus intended to leave with the early emigrants for the West, but he was asked to stay in Nauvoo and build wagons. He also worked on the Nauvoo temple and was one of those who received the blessings of that temple in December of 1845. Eventually they joined the body of the saints in Winter Quarters, but Sophronia died in childbirth on the plains on 26 August 1847.
In 1851 Dominicus, his wives and his six living children finally arrived in Salt Lake City. They moved to Provo in October of that year. But Sylvia MEACHAM decided that she didn't like the life of the polygamist wife and divorced him. It's unclear exactly when she left, but they had to be together for the conception of their son Isaac Morley, who was born in June of 1851 and died while they were crossing the plains. They had no more children together (see her bio) and Sylvia married her 2nd husband on 3 Nov 1855, so she was divorced from Dominicus by then.
Once Dominicus was settled in Provo, he took four more wives:
    Polly MINER 1851
    Elizabeth BROWN 1852
Caroline Maria HUBBARD 1854 (divorced in 1861)
    Frances NASH 1857
Among his descendants, much is made of Dominicus Carter's nine wives, but before he ever came west he had already lost two of those wives, and three others chose to leave. During most of the Provo years he lived with four wives: Mary DURFEE, Polly MINER, Elizabeth BROWN and Fannie NASH. At his death all four of those women were at his bedside. By the count of his grand daughter Hannah Clark PIKE, he had "46 children, 17 of whom preceded him in death, 87 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren." (The book "Carter Pioneers of Provo Utah" says he had 52 children, but there are several known mistakes in that list.)
Dominicus CARTER was described as a high-spirited man and a respected citizen of Provo:
He was First Counselor to President George A. SMITH of the Utah Stake.
He served on the Provo City Council.
He was a Probate Judge for four years.
He was a good singer and in the early days led the singing in Provo.
He helped organize a band which furnished music for the early militia and was their leader for twenty years.
During the 1880s, when polygamists were hunted and tried, many men went into hiding - but Dominicus CARTER stood his ground. As a result, he served time in the state penitentiary. He was in his seventies.
In the history that Hannah Clark PIKE wrote about her grandfather, she said this: "For years he ran a blacksmith shop in Provo. I remember as a girl seeing him put the oxen in an old wood frame to shoe them. He and his older sons also ran a hostelry. I remember seeing the stages drive in, they would run out and change the horses. Sometimes the stage would hurry away and at other times they would remain and go to my father's large home and eat. He always lived in Provo, owning a great deal of property. His homes, blacksmith shop and hostelry were between 1st and 2nd North, 5th West and from 4th West to 5th West and 1st North, Provo. He died as he always lived, a true Latter-day Saint. While on his death bed he called his family around him and gave them many sacred charges for their guidance through life. He bore a strong testimony to the divine mission of the Prophet Joseph SMITH and advised his posterity to abide in his faith."

  2. Lydia SMITH was Dominicus CARTER's first wife - the wife of his youth. After she and her husband joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, they removed to Kirtland, Ohio. A few years later she joined with her husband in the "Kirtland Camp" - the large wagon train that in 1838 made its way from Kirtland to Missouri. While traveling, they lost their two-year- old daughter Sarah Emily, and buried her on the trail.
The book "Carter Pioneers of Provo Utah" picks up the story:
"The camp arrived at their destination on 4 [October]. Persecution and massacres were a frequent occurrence, and mobs preyed on the community. During this time Lydia, wife of Dominicus CARTER, was confined. When the baby was but five days old, she was ordered by a mob with blackened faces to vacate her home by midnight, as they were going to burn it. she went into a nearby woods with her children and remained there throughout the night. There was a cold heavy rainfall and as a result of this exposure so soon after the birth of her baby she took cold and passed away shortly after on 23 Oct. Her children were scattered among the relatives."
[The only problem with this narrative is that there is no record of a child being born to Lydia in October of 1838, and it had been less than eight months since the reported birth of daughter Lydia Ann in February 1838.]
Lydia Smith CARTER was buried in the Far West Burial Ground. On the day of her death "the citizens of Ray county... appealed to the governor of the state, to give the people of Upper Missouri protection from the fearful body of thieves and robbers" (the Mormons). Four days later Governor BOGGS issued his extermination order.
Daughter of Johnathan SMITH & Lydia BROWN.
Dominicus and Lydia Smith CARTER had six children together: Arlytia Long, Lucinda McKenney, Barret (who died young), Sidney Rigdon, Sarah Emily, and Lydia Ann.

From the book "Carter Pioneers of Provo Utah," we read:
"Family legend, handed down by word of mouth through some four or five generations, tells us that when Sophronia's child was to be born a doctor could not be found. Not even an experienced midwife was available to aid her in the delivery of the child at the makeshift campsite on the plains... Apparently it was not a normal parturition for it is retold that as the pain and agony became more intense and unbearable Sophronia clutched the spokes of a wagon wheel and braced herself with all of her waning strength, screaming uncontrollably during the ordeal. The hemorrhage could not be stopped and she died as a few family members stood by helpless. She and her unnamed child were buried in an unmarked grave on the lonely Iowa prairie beside the Carter wagon wheel tracks."

My 3rd great grandmother. She was a Utah Pioneer, crossing the plains in 1851.
Sylvia was married to Dominicus CARTER on 23 Mar 1839. Together they had two children: Eratus Francis CARTER & Isaac Morley CARTER. Polygamy didn't work for her and they divorced.
On 3 Nov 1855 she married John SNIDER, who was a widower. A history of Sylvia's son Erastus Francis CARTER says that John SNIDER "was a grand man and a good father to Erastus." She had two children with John SNIDER: Martin Henry SNIDER & John Hyrum SNIDER.
CHILDREN: Many sources attribute several additional children to Sylvia MEACHAM & Dominicus CARTER, but these children (Harriett, Arthur, Nellie, Louisa, and Amelia) were all born many years after Sylvia left Dominicus. Harriet is documented to be the daughter of Polly MINER. Arthur and Louisa are documented to be the children of Frances NASH. On the list that was purportedly copied from Dominicus Carter's own records Nellie was attributed to Frances NASH, but she is not on the list of children that Frances NASH's mother made. Amelia is attributed to Sylvia MEACHAM in the book "Carter Pioneers of Provo Utah," but she was born more than a decade after Sylvia had left Dominicus. It is possible that Amelia is actually Cornelia, a daughter of Dominicus and Mary DURFEE who was buried 27 August 1867 in the Provo cemetery. Sylvia MEACHAM WAS NOT the mother of these children.
Daughter of Stephen Peabody Meacham & Dorothy Maria Ransom.

    Caroline was married 4 times:
Caroline HUBBARD was Dominicus CARTER's 7th wife. They had two children together and divorced. The book "Carter Pioneers of Provo Utah" states that she divorced him 25 Jan 1861. In 1866 she married Amos FENSTERMAKER.
Caroline Hubbard FENSTERMAKER died of pneumonia. Her death certificate says she was buried at the South Cottonwood Cemetery, which according to the Utah State Historical Society Burials Database is the original name for the Murray City Cemetery.
    Information for William Crawford BEATTIE
The history behind William's first wife reads like this:
At the age of (16) CAROLINE MARIA HUBBARD (daughter to Marshall Moore Hubbard & Caroline Eliza NICKERSON) marries 1st JOHN MARCELLUS PERRY on Dec 23, 1849 in Des Moines, Polk, la, (Having (2) children: Eliza Clarissa & Emma Orilla). John dies at the age of (33) in 1854, only being married for (5) years.
Caroline re-marries a 2nd time to DOMINICUS CARTER (a Mormon Polygamist) at the age of (21) on Oct 20 1854, becoming his 8th wife (Having (2) children: Willard & Clara Melissa). Her parents had joined the Mormon church in 1833, agreeing to this practice of plural marriage and becoming a God after death, according the Mormon belief. (The Mormon church was established by Joseph Smith in 1830). Mr. CARTER's life style was more than he (?she) could assume. At this time Caroline was working at a molasses mill about 3 miles away from home. Her work required her to skim the light foam substance from the molasses. She was paid a small amount of molasses, which served as part of their families winter food. The plural wives had to work hard at home to support their families. Caroline became discourage with this polygamist life style. It was this deciding factor that ruined the marriage. So Caroline divorces Dominicus CARTER in January 1860, at the age of (27).
She re-married a 3rd time to WILLIAM CRAWFORD BEATTIE, and together they have a son William Marcellus Beattie: Sep 15 1861, but later divorces William and ...
re-marries yet a 4th time to AMOS FENSTERMAKER at the age of (33) on July 07, 1866 in Provo, Utah. This is Caroline last marriage signifying her last name as "FENSTERMAKER". Amos & Caroline had (3) children:
    1-Charles Henry Hubbard FENSTERMAKER/
    2-Perry Raymond Hubbard FENSTERMAKER/
    3-David Amos (Jack) FENSTERMAKER
William lived in the same household with Caroline E. NICKERSON (Caroline Maria HUBBARD's mother). Caroline M. HUBBARD was married twice before she married William. Elisha HUBBARD (only son of 4 children) mother to Caroline E. NICKERSON's and Caroline M. HUBBARDs brother, became business partners with William in a freighting business. They moved shortly after William & Caroline had a baby boy named WILLIAM MARCELLUS BEATTIE, born Sep 18 1861, moving to either Arizona or California. In fact, there is (was) a town named HUBBARD, where Elisha settled.
Family lore says that William went to town one day and never came home. According to other family sources, William loaded his wagon with fruits/ vegetables to sell at the market on a morning in Oct. 1861, while he/Caroline Mariah lived in a small farm near Provo, UT. He left that morning and was never heard of again. Some time later his wagon was found upturned in some rocks by the Provo River, but William, the produce, and horses that pulled the wagon were gone and never seen again.
Caroline and her children return to Utah by 1865. She remarries the 4th time to AMOS FENSTERMAKER. William Marcellus BEATTIE thus lives with her and the other relatives until he is about age (15); at which point he and his mother have a fall out. He decides to leave home and from then on he supports himself, eventually settling in Idaho.
After divorcing Caroline Maria HUBBARD, William Crawford BEATTIE Re-Married a 2nd time: EVELINE BELLE CARTER on September 16, 1856 in Lafayette Co., Missouri.
There are two dates on findagrave for the divorce, 1860 and 1861. As Caroline was with her new husband, William BEATTIE on the 1860 census I am assuming the 1860 date is the right one.

GENDER: The family records of some Carter descendants have the gender of this child as male. Others have the gender as female. The fact is that Dominicus did not state the gender of this child in his record (he simply wrote the word "Baby"). Nor is there any other historical record about the birth. The early histories about the event simply refer to "the child," and later attempts to assign either male or female gender can only be considered guesses.

OBITUARY: Box Elder News 28 November 1912:
    PARK VALLEY RESIDENT DIES
Sometime early Tuesday morning the spirit of Mr. E. F. CARTER of Park Valley passed to the other life after he had been confined to his bed for many weary weeks during which time he was helpless and for the most part speechless as a result of paralytic strokes which afflicted him at intervals.
Mr. CARTER's trouble began over a year ago when his left leg became affected and circulation ceased. He was then in a very precarious condition, little hope being entertained for his recovery. The limb was amputated, however, and Mr. Carter recovered nicely from the effects of the operation and was feeling pretty much himself again, being about on crutches and looking after his interests, when he suffered a paralytic stroke which rendered one side of his body useless. He improved however, and gave promise of a recovery when he suffered the second stroke and since that time has had them at frequent intervals. His power of speech became lost, though he could recognize his family and friends and nod his approval of their actions, and he was also unable to eat anything. For a number of weeks not a morsel of solid food passed his lips but he took nourishment in the shape of wine, coffee and other stimulants.
The writer, in company with Pres. W. C. HORSLEY called upon Mr. CARTER on the 12 inst., and though he was unable to speak, he nodded recognition and struggled to whisper goodbye when we left him.
Erastus F. CARTER was one of the prominent men of Park Valley and has been a resident of that section for many years. Through judicious manipulation of his affairs, he was a cattle and sheepman, he has acquired considerable of this world's goods and owns a great many acres of land. For many years Mr. CARTER was the Notary Public of Park Valley attending to all real estate transactions and other matters of a legal character which required the services of a notary.
He leaves a wife and many sons and daughter as well as a great many grand children. The News extends condolences to the bereaved family, whose relationship affects many of the families in the valley.
He was my 2nd great grandfather.

Isaac Morley CARTER was born while his parents were crossing the plains and died as an infant. He is buried out there somewhere on the Mormon Pioneer trail.
  21. Information from findagrave web site
My source on this child is the book "Carter Pioneers of Provo Utah," which has a lot of errors. He is not included in the "Xerox copy of a typewritten copy of a handwritten copy of what purported to be an exact copy of 'Uncle Dominicus CARTER's records.'" But neither is the child that Sophronia Babcock lost about the same time. 1849 was a hard time for keeping records, especially in what was then called Kanesville (Winter Quarters) where the child is said to have been born and died. The book's source on this child appears to be family group records submitted by the descendants of Mary DURFEE to the author of the book. He is not found in the lists of deaths at the Winter Quarters Project website, but their lists are acknowledged to be incomplete.

    Notes for Parley Pratt CARTER:
Parley was not found on the findagrave website where I have found the names of all the other  mothers, so I am still unable to confirm from a primary source that he is the son of Frances. However, the 18 trees on ancestry for Parley CARTER all show his mother as Frances. Still not proven but he has been left as her son until other information is received.

I do not know if I am going to manage to put on all the information for this  CARTER/DAVIES chart, it would appear that Domincus CARTER had nine wives and around 40  children, having several wives at the same time. When he died Frances married again, so it becomes a very complicated chart. At present I have put on all the marriages and all the children for Domincus and Frances and I have started putting children on for the other wives.
Some of the wives above remarried and had children, it is impossible to show this on the chart above but I will comment in the notes for the relevant wife when I get to them.

It is impossible to show for the children which ones belonged to which wife and Domincus and as he was married to more than one wife at a time it is difficult to know which children belonged to which wife, I have put in italic in a separate row, who we think the child's mother was.

I think I now have the basis for this chart on, ie all the wives and all the children we have found to date with marriages for those we have found marriages for and boxes on for those that had children, lot of additional information still to be added.

Many of the people the children married also had other wives, but at the present time I have on the following charts (in almost all cases) just shown the children for the CARTER marriage. There are so many children from other marriages it is virtually impossible to show them all in the format I have evolved over the year.

The idea of these charts is to give the information that we have found in the research we have done and put together and with the help of many other people who have contacted us over the past thirty odd years we have been researching our family. The idea is that you click on the Chart box in blue to be taken to the next family. There is now a large number of charts to be found and connections can be made to all the main families I am researching. If a chart has a box with the standard background it means that as yet I have not put the Chart on the Web.
To conform to the Data Protection Act all the Charts have been altered to exclude all details for living people other than the name.
